Synopsis

In a high school classroom, students mourn the loss of one of their own: Tomie Kawakami, who has been murdered and dismembered. Shocked by the announcement of her death, the class is puzzled by the cruel fate that has befallen someone so dear to them; such a radiant and beautiful girl did not deserve such a hideous demise. However, a strikingly familiar student suddenly appears at the classroom's entrance. Gorgeous, slender, and with a beauty mark under her left eye, Tomie smiles and apologizes for being late.

But this is just the beginning of the mysteries surrounding this seemingly inhuman woman. The men unlucky enough to catch her eye become smitten with her instantly, but also become driven by a dark impulse to dismember her, one they often succumb to. And each time, Tomie returns from the dead to continue her favorite pastime: toying with men.

Background

Tomie was published in English by ComicsOne on April 4, 2005. VIZ Media republished the series in a single hardcover omnibus on December 20, 2016. The story Painter was also published by VIZ Media as part of Shiver: Junji Ito Selected Stories. The series was also released in Polish by Japonica Polonica Fantastica in two volumes from February 1, 2015, to May 30, 2015; and in Spanish by ECC Ediciones from July 29, 2016, to August 31, 2016.

The manga was adapted into multiple Japanese live-action films and an anthology TV series that aired on December 26, 1999.

Tomie was seen in Liberdade's São Paulo...

Tomie is the typical girl who goes out at night to Liberdade to trick nerds and step on them, I'm sure it would be like that if she were from São Paulo '-'

She is a girl who breaks the hearts of poor boys where she would appear on Cidade Alerta every week being a victim of jealousy from some random guy...

In addition to her beauty, Tomie is almost a goddess (because she can multiply herself), but even with all the men being hypnotized by her, she cannot be satisfied, always wanting to break more hearts.

As with so many Junji Ito stories, it is more a "silly story with horror elements" than a real horror story. Tomie is no different, and while the first 2-3 and last 2-3 stories try their best to form a beginning and end narrative, the whole thing feels like so many other Junji Ito stores - half baked. Overall - it is okay. Generally interesting enough, and some of the panels are really well done and fun to look at. As with other Junji Ito works, it suffers from character design (so many characters look the same both within this story and to other books) ...

The worst piece of shit I've ever had the misfortune to read. Repetitive, absurd, stupid... It's the same plot over and over again. I read it all the way to the end because I couldn't believe it. I thought it wasn’t possible to make such an absolutely disjointed story. It's as if he thought it would be cool to have a character that regenerates and without developing the idea one bit he started making 20 random chapters and since there's blood and boobs and there's not even half a joke some crazy person thought it’s an adult story and published it.
