An unexplainable phenomenon of people bursting into flames assails humanity. Put your life on the line to extinguish the flames! A great conflagration that will shake up the manga world! A sci-fi firefighting battle!
Enen no Shouboutai, or, in english, Fire Brigade of Flames, is Ookubo Atsushi's, the creator of the well known Soul Eater, new shounen manga. From the first few chapters that have been released so far, it looks like a promising ordinary shounen manga.
''People die of various causes, old age, disease, suicide... this may be a type of fatal disease as well, but nowadays, the cause of death mostly feared in this world is... death by fire.''
The story begins as the protagonist, Shinra, joins the Special Fire Brigade #8, in order to become a hero who fights against the Human Combustion Phenomenon, a ''disease'' that
causes a normal human being to suddenly burst into flame and turn into a flame person. After he joins, we see him fighting against flame people, but other brigades, too, in order to find out the cause of the Human Combustion Phenomenon and about his past.
It might sound like an ordinary shounen manga story, but the fact that it uses a pretty unique theme with fire brigades, makes it, at least, a little interesting. Enen no Shouboutai, also, has a nice and quite fast pace and enjoyable fights, so it is not going to end up boring to read.
A somewhat negative element of the story is the sometimes unnecessary ecchi scenes. Of course, this is something that everyone may see differently, but I believe that throwing in pure fanservice scenes even in the middle of a battle, ruins all the impact of the fight.
The characters may actually be the weakest part of Enen no Shouboutai. They are not given a lot of focus, don't have much depth and can be described with one or two personality traits. The only one who the creator focuses on is the protagonist, Shinra, and everyone else just seems to be there to fill their role.
Shinra is like most shounen protagonists. He is a quite strong 3rd generation fire soldier who chose to join the Fire Brigade because he wants to be a hero who helps and is admired by others but also, because he wants to find out what exactly happened in his tragic past. He doesn't have many unique traits, apart from the fact that he has a goofy grin when he is nervous and tensed up.
The art is very satisfying, it might look simple at first, but it is nicely done and fits the story and characters. The backgrounds are good and detailed and the characters look fine, too. There are also some great action scenes and effects.
So far, I am enjoying Enen no Shouboutai a lot, since it has a nice, fast pace and a quite intriguing story, that makes you want to know what happens next.
Enen no Shouboutai's story may not have a different purpose than other shounen manga and it may not be one of the best, but the unique setting makes it a little interesting. If you ignore a few of its problems, mainly the characters, you will find it pleasing. If you want to read an ordinary, but enjoyable shounen manga, you can give Enen no Shouboutai a try.
