This topic is part of our Customizing your list section:
http://myanimelist.net/forum/?topicid=419405

Welcome to my starter tutorial on customizing your anime and manga list with CSS. There's a lot you can change on your list, as in the example below:

I will make the "advanced CSS" option simple and within minutes you'll have a new layout, plus I'll show how to change fonts and backgrounds to your liking! I know this seems impossible for a beginner, but its very easy and I'll guide you through it with pictures. Post #2 has the tutorial, post#3 has frequently asked questions and tips!

Step 1: Find MyListStyle

Just click this link for step 1:

http://myanimelist.net/ownlist/style

Switch to Classic Style if it is not selected already.

Step 2: Make your style ID

Now, on that page click Advanced Style CSS List Design which is circled in red below for you.

Note: This screen below might come up (and if it doesn't don't worry, and simply go to the next screenshot). Just click "I understand.." circled in red in the pic! It will tell you it created a CSS file then redirect you.

You should see something like this afterwards, if so, you completed the step correctly!

Step 3: Click your style ID

Another easy step! Just click the newly created Style ID! I pointed it out in red below.

note: it won't have the same number as the one in the pic.

Now you'll come to a box titled Advanced CSS Edit File with a load of confusing text.

It doesn't matter what text is in the box, and it doesn't matter if the text in your box is different than whats in the example above, because you'll be deleting it all in the next step. But when we're finished with this tutorial, codes put into this box will control the look of your list layout!

Step 4: Delete the text in the box.

Just that: delete ALL the text in the box. We won't be using any of that code. This box is often called the "CSS edit box" btw.

So for now, delete the text box so it looks like this example below. When you see a clear box, you know you did this step right.

Step 5:
(a) Click the spoiler button below to reveal the premade beginner's layout code- copy and paste all the text in blue the spoiler into your clear CSS edit box.
OR
(b) Visit this page: http://myanimelist.net/forum/?topicid=318587
and take the custom layout CSS from any one of those layouts! Copy and paste the CSS into the CSS edit box.

However, I strongly recommend you start with the beginner's code first- it's easiest to learn basics from (but not necessary).

If you're going to use beginner's layout, you must copy the whole text in blue. It is the premade Hatsune Miku layout seen from the top of the pot.
Later on, you'll be able to change this layout's background and colors to your liking or replace it with another premade layout of your choice!

Step 6: Save the code in the box by pressing the blue Update CSS button.

The blue button below the box circled in red below. It says "update CSS" in the pic.

You should see an "Updated CSS Style" when you save the code correctly. Next, we will apply this style to your list.

Step 7: Apply style to your list
Now that you have this layout set to one of your Style IDs, its time to set it to your list!

Just go to this link:

http://myanimelist.net/editprofile.php?go=stylepref&do=changestyle

Click the down arrow next to the list (anime or manga) you want to customize, which will be usually be anime list on your first try. On that list, you'll find the style ID number you created earlier! Highlight and click it. In the example below, I pointed to mine in red. Yours won't have the same number as mine.

Now save the changes by clicking the blue button at the bottom
"change list styles". Its circled in red in the example below:

It will say this if successful:

Done! Check your anime list!

Now the list should be customized according to the code set in the style ID. Anytime you make a change to that style ID through the Advanced Style CSS Editor box, it will change for the list its set to!

Now that you learned how to change the layout, you can edit the list style and change the background! I know you'll probably have questions, so I addressed some common ones below. If you want to try a different custom layout, simply choose a layout here, and copy the CSS layout from its source page:
http://myanimelist.net/forum/?topicid=318587
Delete the old CSS in your CSS edit box and paste the new one into it, just as you did in steps 4 and 5! Then save.

Thanks Shishio-kun. This tutorial helped me customizing my anime list.

Here's another trick for everyone, you can have your background picture change randomly, just add the pictures you want in this site:
http://signavatar.com (or another similar)

and switch your css background image for the image link they provide.

You get a random background image which time, which can be pretty nice (imagine an image for each your favorite anime).

You can try it in my anime list right now.

Other tip, I used firefox + firebug plugin to edit my css in real time, it's pretty cool and you can obtain good results even without be a css expert.

This site also provides some nice combining colors for yours lists:

Did you want your list less transparent? Add this code to the bottom of your anime list CSS then save:

.category_totals, .td1, .td2, #grand_totals, #copyright {
opacity:1 !important;
filter:alpha(opacity=100) !important;
}

That should make it way less clear, solid actually. You have codes in there that make it semi-transparent. This code I'm giving you will override them and make the list solid again. If this doesn't work go here and change opacity to 0%

What do you mean exactly? I don't see any roughness on the list edges that can be smoothed out.

Do you mean the far right side bar by chance? This is a part of the browser and not the list. It lags when you try to scroll through your list and doesn't seem smooth because your list is so long. The best thing to do right now is have your list show only one category at a time. Go here and set that, if you want, go to "anime list setting" and "default status selected" and set it to one category rather than "show all".

http://myanimelist.net/editprofile.php?go=listpreferences

There might also be a way to make scrolling smoother through your browser settings. Like Firefox has scrolling options- something called "smooth scrolling" and "autoscrolling" and there are add-ons for this- but I never see a difference with these personally.

I don't really follow what you mean by "overlap the list". If you want something to move in front of something else, you have to increase its z-index the same way you'd increase its height or width. The more z-index something has, the more in front of everything else it is. Things on a webpage that appear behind everything else have the least index. Add z-index:100 !important; to a section after the other codes and it will move that section in front of everything else.

More importantly it sounds like you want to customize the headers individually, so try this:

http://myanimelist.net/forum/?topicid=314657&show=0#post1

Its a set of codes to customize the individual headers. I also included a code margin-bottom in these which will let you move the headers down in the vicinity of the list. Normally the headrs go behind the list, but if you gave the headers a lot of z-index, they will overlap the list as you wanted, I think.

I also don't see what you mean by "move the list at the bottom of the page" but maybe you mean you want to be able to scroll your list bottom past the top. You would have to increase the height of your anime list. So add height: 2000px;. If 2000 is too much or not enough, change it.

Nice guide and template =)

Umm.. Question:
Is it possible the change color or font of "Airing" & "Not Yet Aired" without making changes to other texts?

From my experience, whenever I make changes to "Airing" & "Not Yet Aired," some other texts will also be affected. Is there anyway to prevent this from happening?

Thanks in advance.

This isn't their code, but if you this CSS code instead of the one you have now will give you the same style with your current bg. You have to replace the background image.

Thanks for this! I edited it a bit and am pretty content with how it turned out for me.

I am new to CSS and used code for the customized headers, but it made my list shift to the left. Is there a way to make it centered again?

Also, I was wondering if it was possible to have an image on top of the background, like a header that goes behind or above the list, taking up most of the screen? Or is the only way to make a really large background image?

Maybe you have some incorrect syntax in your code somewhere. The list shifting to the left happened to me a few times, i was missing a bracket somewhere i think.

Sure - but just to let you know its not the header codes that are making it shift to the left- if you want to center your list you can do one of two things:

Find in your code
#list_surround {
position: absolute;
width: 600px;
}

and remove that line with the position code.

You can alternatively just add this to the bottom of your CSS, the list should be centered. And later on move it left or right a little more with by increasing the px amounts:

#list_surround {
left: 0px !important;
right: 0px !important;
margin: auto !important;
}

I can probably give you a code to put another background anywhere you want, behind or in front wherever. Only thing is the code can vary a lot depending on where its going to be exactly. When you're ready just tell me exactly where you want the background, what its going to be in front or behind, how far its going to extend and so forth.

If you're just trying to put a background behind the list, you can use #list_surround for that you don't seem to have an image in there at the moment. Only thing is a background in that particular spot is going only as wide as the list itself is. If you want a image behind the list thats wider then the list, but in front of the main background, let me know I can see what I can come up with.

Thank you! I got rid of the position line >__<

As for the picture, I'm trying to get something like this: http://i.imgur.com/8srtP.png
At the moment I'm thinking of making that the backround and having it fixed in the top center the way it;s in the list in the first post >_<

Also, is there a way to make the grey behind the list more solid and a different color?
(I copy-pasted all of the extra codes at the end of the list style code in for this thread's list style)

#inlineContent {
background: url(http://moronicidiot.netai.net/gallery/61bfee279f0e534bdc1ffbc6700e322e/fea1dfce24589a51777388a5cc7e6709.png) no-repeat fixed center bottom teal !important;
display: inline-block !important;
height: 900px !important;
left: 0 !important;
margin: auto !important;
position: fixed !important;
right: 0 !important;
top: 0 !important;
width: 1200px !important;
z-index: -1 !important;
}

Try this code at the bottom of your CSS, I used it on your code here and it looks like this with this particular pic. The two characters will look perfect on the sides. You just have to replace the background image url with a url of both characters with a little gap in the middle as wide as the list. Also the color is set to teal to give you some perspective on where the background is, when you're done set it to transparent.

.category_totals, .td1, .td2, #grand_totals, #copyright {
background-image: url(none) !important;
background-color: red;}

.category_totals:hover, .td1:hover, .td2:hover, #grand_totals:hover, #copyright:hover {
background-color: blue;}

These codes let you replace the list color and background itself. Add them to the bottom too. The first code affects the colors of the list when you don't have the cursor on it, and the second set of codes affect what you see when you have the cursor on a part of list. You'll see how it works cuz some of it will be red and blue when you put the cursor on it. Change the background colors to how you want.

btw I like the list design a lot so far, and the really like way the bg looks when you scroll down the page. Good job!

This is solid black-

.category_totals, .td1, .td2, #grand_totals, #copyright {
background-image: url(none) !important;
background-color: black;}

.category_totals:hover, .td1:hover, .td2:hover, #grand_totals:hover, #copyright:hover {
background-color: black;}

This is totally clear, no opacity-

.category_totals, .td1, .td2, #grand_totals, #copyright {
background-image: url(none) !important;
background-color: transparent;}

.category_totals:hover, .td1:hover, .td2:hover, #grand_totals:hover, #copyright:hover {
background-color: transparent;}

Add this to the bottom, and change the colors as you wish. It sets the rows how you asked, you can tell what code is what by the color. Also there are codes that affect the rows when you put the cursor over the rows.

.category_totals, .td1, .td2, #grand_totals, #copyright {
background-image: url(none) !important;
background-color: pink;}

.category_totals, .td2, #grand_totals, #copyright {
background-image: url(none) !important;
background-color: red;}

.category_totals:hover, .td1:hover, .td2:hover, #grand_totals:hover, #copyright:hover {
background-color: white;}

.category_totals:hover, .td2:hover, #grand_totals:hover, #copyright:hover {
background-color:yellow;}

I think I'll add a tutorial to customizing the top bar a little more then cuz the only one here is for removing it. For now you can use these codes in the spoiler and it will let you control the parts of the bar individually, if you add position: fixed !important;: the section will stay in place and you can edit the backgrounds and colors easily. Add !important to any codes you add the way I do in some parts.

You can also try this to control the entire black bar but I've never used this code so I don't know how it will work out, you could add position fixed codes and such to see what happens:
#mal\_control\_strip

I'm so happy I found this. You are a sweet-heart! Thank you for this tutorial. * Mwah, mwah* (air-kiss).

I've been trying forever to personalize my anime and manga list with disappointing results. Trying to do it on other websites never worked or too much trouble and I would just give up. I don't have a clue as to what I was doing.

Even though I made mistakes during my initial run-thru with your tutorial (still nowhere near finished with it), I'm thrilled that you took the time to make concise instructions, screenshots for what things should look like, etc. Your reassurance that mistakes are easily made and fixed is appreciated. Perfect for someone like me who is NOT a "tech person".

BTW, I love your banner for this thread...the motion of the 2 banners jumping/popping-up/interchanging is fabulously fun. (^-^)

There is a menu bar customization tutorial now; you can fix it to the bottom easily with it.

Shishio-kun, do you have any pointers for resizing the backgroung image? Depending on the saved-image I choose from my hard-drive, it's either too small or too big.

Also, do you have more tutorials for customizing: signature banners, the "My Panel" page, etc.? Please bear with me since I'm not a tech-person.

Your help would be uber-appreciated...pretty please?

...sorry if you've already posted this info in the forum. I must've missed it - information overload and stuff. (^-^#;)

missmotoko, pointers? Sure:

Now being serious: if you put following code somewhere to your style:
body{background-size: cover}
then the image will be resized so that it's height or width will equal to height or width of block (the whole document with body). You can see live example on my anime list, just resize your browser window and image will be resized too!

Fortunately background size isn't an issue anymore, you can use the code Veriti left add it an empty spot like the bottom, but make sure your browser is updated to the latest version too please

As for the signature thing, I am starting to write tutorials on things of that nature so I'll look into how I'd do a a guide to make nice signatures. I don't really know off hand what to tell you, what are looking for with the sig you want? Got an example?

If you mean you are trying to customize the About Me on your My Profile page, I am starting to post tutorials on that, I just did a big one on all the kinds of BBcode here and there's an unfinished one on making a profile graphic I mean to get to later this week. In the meantime I can help you through profile comments, if you're looking to customize your My Profile the way mine and other people's is, just find some pics that you want to use and if you like a certain kind of layout link me to it on my profile, then we can see how to make one for your page.

Also check back regularly for group updates, and new threads in the forum, the front page menu isn't reflective of whats here atm.

@ shishio-kun... QUOTE: "make sure your browser is updated to the latest version too please".

OK, just to make sure I get simple and easy to overlook mistakes out of the way, what version of Firefox do you recommend I use?

Don't laugh but I still use version 3.6. I just found out a couple days ago version 10.0 is out.

I'm usually hesitant (too stubborn) to update because of incompatibility to my fav add-ons, glitches, bugs and well...changes I don't agree with, really. Always finding google searches about how people are experiencing problems with the latest, updated version screwing up on them. I've stumbled upon a couple websites informing me my browser is old but they usually still work anyway.

What I'm trying to ask is , do you think version 3.6 is too antiquated and obsolete for what I'm wanting to do with my anime list and most other things? I'm fine with updating, I just want a stable version.

@missmotoko
Firefox used custom property -moz-background-size before 4.0 so you will have to add this one as well if you want it to work for you.

I personally think that 3.6 is pretty obsolete from the point of CSS3 rendering by now because it doesn't support many standard properties, which were only a draft when 3.6 was out just like this background-size or popular border-radius thing.

Upgrading your browser is essential if you want to see new web-pages the way they are supposed to look. I always try to use latest version if that's possible, but yeah, updating FF has always been a pain in the ass, that was one of the reasons I stopped using it as a main browser.

It seems that 4.0 or above shall be fine for rendering web pages, but 9-10 may have more up-to-date add-ons available for them.

Btw, I find there is more difference between 3.6 and 4 than between 4 and 10
