I was going to give Higurashi a watch but I noticed there's one from 2006. Are there any differences besides released at different years, is the story still the same?

Yes. It's a direct sequel.

You only need to watch Deen's Higurashi, the only one that matters.

This is a sequel to the first 2 seasons. It's season 3 so you need to watch 2006 first.
The watch order is-
1. Higurashi no naku koro ni 2006 (S1)
2. Higurashi no naku koro ni kai (S2)
3. Higurashi no naku koro ni rei (OVA, optional but quite entertaining and a little more info about the story)
4. Higurashi no naku koro ni kira(OVA, optional and more like fanservice, you can totally skip it)
5. Higurashi no naku koro ni Gou (S3)
6. Higurashi no naku koro ni sotsu (S4)
Have a great day😁😁

It's not so necessary but if you want to empathize with the characters yes. Higurashi 2006 and higurashi kai it's so much better than the new seasons 🤍.

As someone who was appalled by Sotsu for ruining Higurashi, I suggest just watching the first three (Ni, Kai, and Rei) Kai is peak Higurashi but Rei is still a relatively fine finale to the whole thing

I don't think the new ones are as good but if you really want to watch them, the 2006-2007 ones are an absolute must and cannot be skipped whatsoever

I also did this. I did go back to watch 2006 and kai after gou ended, and my understanding of the series was a lot better.

Surprisingly, watching gou first didn't ruin the series for me as I generally don't like being spoiled

Higurashi Gou (2020) is a sequel. Watch Deen's Higurashi first; better yet, ONLY watch Deen's Higurashi, as it's the only one worth watching. Or even better, read the manga version. Or even more better, read the original Visual Novel.

Fat cap. Mal literally listed Higurashi 2020 as a sequel.

I' d recommend reading the VNs first. Probably the manga-way is also not bad, idk really, I have read only the Umineko Manga.
But if you have time to spend, VNs are really-really worth it

The S1 adaptation is really meh ( the perfect balance of horror, slice of life, and mystery was f-d up. Man, I still can't forgive them what they did with my favorite 5th VN, lol. And the animation , is, well cheap mid 00s animation as it is).
The S2 is much better in every aspect. They probably had noticed that everybody liked S1, so got a much better budget for S2, and that's noticeable, both in animation and storytelling.
To sum up, S2 is quite a good adaptation while S1 is regrettably not.
And as S3 is a direct sequel, unfortunately we probably won't ever get the decent adaptation of the arcs S1 covers.

The new seasons feel quite interesting (well I haven't finished S3 tbh, will probably do within the next hours). People probably dislike them just because they were hoping for a proper adaptation of the original (VN). But got a different kind of original (completely original chapters lol). Well, maybe I will hate the new seasons as well once I complete them, idk, but for now after S3 ep 21 I definitely liked what I saw better that S1.
