For the longest time i always perceived the term of waifu as just whatever female character you like so much and is part of your favorites. But aparently is something more specific than just that, and it looks that has to fill a certain "criteria" or "checklist" for a female character to be considered "waifu", and apparently not every kind of female character can fall in this category.

Ive seen a lot people comenting something like this "She is a great character, but not a good waifu" and it gets me confused. For example, characters like the Major from Ghost In The Shell, or the women from Black Lagoon, people dont seem to consider them waifus, independiently of how cool of a characters they might be, which makes me ask myself, what does waifu even mean? what kind of characters fall under this category and who doesnt?

I want to know your opinions.

It's complicated. There's 3 definitions that float around that people mean, but it really depends on who you're talking to.

1 - Some use it to mean Favorite character. THe one they like most.

2 - The character they'd marry if they were real, maybe a crush.

3 - They genuinely love this character as a romantic partner and have feeling for them.
My waifu is the most wonderful waifu. Mai Valentine.

We're freaking out that we're running out of time, but to do what? Should i stop and think of that? Is there something i could do to slow it down? Live in a day for once, instead of watch it sprinting by

as Blockernator said there's various different reasons people have Waifus for.
For me I guess it's more than a favourite character, I genuinely feel happy when I see them on screen, and I get comfort from them (but I do also with other things too).

Their definitely not people I'd marry because quite frankly their horrible people, but there's still something that I like about them that I can't easily explain.

The criteria varies from person to person. A waifu is essentially a character that you have romantic feelings for. It could be their personality, looks, or so on that makes you attracted to them.

Well it's most basic explanation is a female character that you'd wife, if they were real. I don't really have one personally, even though I do have some female Anime characters I really love. Case in point:

Shinobu Oshino

Nana Osaki (On the right)

Nana "Hachi" Komatsu (On the left)

There's also the male equivalent which is called a "husbando"
"Did you forget already? In my word the color "red" doesn't exist. These must be...my tears. Ever since I woke up from my coma...I think I've been waiting for this very moment. You'd do well to remember this, Maya. The only time a lawyer can cry is when it's all over."

I agree mostly with TheBlockernator take on it

but adding to it that people also could be picking a Waifu for each series they watch

And the people who say "She is a great character, but not a good waifu" probably are thinking something along these lines "would I be able to live with this character in 1 house"

Is it really so strange that someone might feel an emotional attachment to an anime character? Besides, it's a meme. I think at least 80% of the time when people say "waifu" they're just messing around.

I've been aware of that aspect of it for about a decade, but there are incels who don't see it as a joke.

Easier than Moe to explain but I think favourite character or those they care about on a deeper level describe it.

Whether the one they do or don't want the protagonist to get with (shipping), or they want to imagine themselves with the character just like any idol, crush or so I guess but for anime characters.

Either way I only play along and just say it's my favourite character, I get the joke though but some people do take things further and don't get the joke.

I think waifus don't necessarily means I'd marry her in real life. There's a lot of people who hate tsundere irl but have a lot waifus with this trait. If I have to give a definition, is just a female anime character that made you attracted to her regardless if there's a rational reason or not.

I think a waifu is a character that you develop romantic feelings for or strongly admire. You might also respect the character and feel like you care for that character's well-being/ feelings.
