▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ Interview #236 - @Catalano ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬

Fish Story

"Everybody should go to the beachside at least once in their lives... and not because of the girls in bikini."

Please tell us a bit about yourself.

First and foremost, I am a "culer," as in an FC Barcelona fan. This is the principal thing that describes me. I breathe with Barca, I sleep thinking about Barca and all those obsessive stuff like searching for young players that could be good for us, then go to Barca Blaugranes forums to talk about the team some more with other culers. But of course, the administration only wants our money, but that's another story (let's not get into football). To talk about myself is to talk about Barca and living as a Barca fan. Sorry for using the word [Barca] so many times, but writing like this perfectly encapsulates my attitude and well-being.

Barca Blaugranes for Barcelona Fans - Forums here are worse than MAL’s Casual Discussion

Some other stuff about me: I'm 31 and working a three-shift job. My boss is a jackass who screams louder than that chick who screams ERUNESUTAAAA!!! when he's angry and has mood changes of your usual tsundere. I kid you not, it's very annoying. Well, I have to work to pay for my booze. Last month, I bought a 250 lei bottle of Japanese whiskey (you can do the conversion yourself, too lazy for that) and no, it wasn't the good kind of Japanese whiskey, just some stuff they send to second-world countries. Oh, I'm from Romania by the way, born and raised in Buzău.

I wear glasses and I have medium-length hair; I posted pics of myself many times on MAL selfie threads. I have an annoying personality because I am in my own world even when talking with someone, but I don't do it out of disrespect. I just think about some cool stuff in my head as I love imagining things.

Stuff that describes me perfectly is the Laughing Man quote, which is also taken from A Catcher in The Rye and that one time when Axl Rose said, "I don't like people telling me what I can and can't do!"

I like being direct and I love fun and jokes—all kinds of jokes. I hate eating because you lose time and energy. We should use our 300 IQ someday to invent some paste that we can eat once a day and be satisfied. I like to read: my fave book is Moby Dick by Herman Melville. I love Murakami Haruki's books, although the new ones are not that good as he got old and lost his spark. Nowegian Wood is his masterpiece, Wind-up Bird Chronicle is a close second.

What is the story behind your username?

My username doesn't have a cool story behind it. When I first joined MAL, my username was "el_catalano" and "el" means "the" or something like that. It's very simple... I am a big FC Barcelona fan, the people of Barcelona are Catalans because Barcelona is a city in Catalunya (now a Spanish generalitat, but in the past, it was a great and independent country. They did some political mistakes when allying with Aragon, then the Bourbon war, France, etc. No one cares about Spanish politics). Now, my real name is Cătălin so... can you see how easy it'll be for my friends to call me Catalano? And because of that, I choose to use this nickname on MAL too. I also use it on other sites, it sounds cool.

I would love to post some Lluis Llach singing L'Estaca, but eh, don't wanna bother MAL with that.

And for the people who read Shingeki no Kyojin, basically the Catalans are Eldians and the Castilians are Marleyans. Don't believe me? Check out Eren Jaeger's "Spanish" VAs. Dudes are Catalans, both of them. One is Jordi and one is Jaume. Talk about cliche names.

Could you give us a brief history of your time on MAL?

My time on MAL was too long but I can summarize it:

2010 - I wanna watch some anime but I don't know what anime existed (except the stuff I've watched on TV), so I googled "all anime list.” I randomly got to Westlo's list (a MAL user) and I can't understand why there were so few anime that I've watched. Dude still has Sheryl Nome in his faves. Too bad because Ranka is clearly better.

2010 (late) - Somehow I began to understand the concept of MAL. I made an account and made my list. I searched for cool anime on ‘MAL’s Top Anime’ list.

2010-2016 - I lurked on the forums and commented on news articles. Those were fun times. I discovered lots of nice anime in this period just by reading synopses, reviews, episode discussions, etc. I also added some characters to the DB, I mean really useless ones like Guraga from Kiba no Tabishonin or Takada Chinatsu from Tsumitsuki.

2016-2018 - I started participating more on the forums.

2018-2020 - I started making threads. Some were cool, some were straight-up idiotic. I started making reviews for series that don't have one. I participated more on the forums because my job was really boring. Somehow I wrote over 10,000 forum posts during this time.

2021 - I just keep moving forward. Did you like the reference?

Some trash threads of mine, please don't bump. I can't bear to get another BOAT:

Does Ayuhara Kozue possess the most beautiful anime eyes?
There is no bad anime red hair girl
Did you finally open your eyes to realize that Zero Two is the best kisser in anime?
Betray your country for anime?
Let's be honest: no one respects you on MAL if you have less than 10,000 forum posts
We all love Haruno Sakura

How did you get into anime and manga?

Anime was on TV for as long as I remember. I don't know which was my first, could it be Mila Superstar? I remember I was watching it with the whole family while eating. There was the World Tournament arc, where Japan was playing USSR and I got into an argument with my dad. Mila was dubbed in German and sometimes in Italian (for some reason) and I couldn't understand why German girls are wearing Japanese uniforms and playing against some unknown country. My dad tried to explain to me the science of dubbing, but I was too dumb so he got angry and changed the channel. It could have also been Kurenai Sanshiro or Mirai Shonen Conan that my dad had on tape (I don't know how he got a tape with Conan. He deleted it and wrote "Shogun" on the VHS tape). Maybe even Grendizer or Sailor Moon or even Dragon Ball, maybe Pokemon. I thank RTL2 for bringing me into the world of anime. Dragon Ball made me wanna try drawing and because I loved the series, loving anime was the normal step ahead.

Then came the Animax period. They had some great anime which I loved like NANA, Fullmetal Alchemist and Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Bleach, you name it. Now it's so easy to watch what I like. Back in the day, I was waiting for Pyoro-chan to finish in order to watch Naruto. You can say what you want, Pyoro-chan is no fun at all.

What are the three anime or manga that you would recommend to readers?

That's a very hard question. I can't think of anything from the top of my head. I only have weird ones to recommend so I have to check on my list. But it would look boring if I do that... let's be direct, couldn't care less about memory:

Kurenai Sanshiro (Anime) - This was made in 1969 by Tatsunoko Pro. An absolute masterpiece with layers upon layers of information and plot. It's not a simple revenge story (that's only the first layer) nor is it a coming of age story (that's the second layer). Hell, not even Legend of the Galactic Hero purists know about it. I could talk forever about the philosophies in the show, the symbols, the shots, the names, and the numbers. If you thought Neon Genesis Evangelion is full of symbols, you're not prepared for KureSan. The art style and animation will scare some people, but Ippei Kuri lived in that period and we can't control time. I actually don't even wanna talk about this anime, just go and experience it. It's mind-blowing and surreal when you make the connections between Jesus and Bruce Lee, the number 33, and the crimson cross of Sanshiro. How come he wears a red dogi and he has a blue belt when we're supposed to think that he's the best judoka ever? Also, his fighting style is clearly not Judo—more like Karate—so why is he saying sometimes that he is a judoka? What was the deal about his inner self experiencing a style of martial arts that he never did before? I agree that the magma and monkey kingdom episodes were a bit dumb, but even those have something to say about our world. You may argue that I'm putting stuff where there is none and it can be true. Still, you can also enjoy it as a simple revenge story with lots of random fights and action.

Chio-chan no Tsuugakuro (Manga) - Very good manga. Fun things with high school girls, but the girls are dumb and annoying, made to make the reader laugh and I sure had lots and lots. I read most of the chapters while drunk, but I laughed while sober, too. Also, it's so rare that we see a true gamer girl and not a fake one. She really acts like she's supposed to, which is why the stories are so good. Chio is true to herself and the comedy spurns from that. It has a little bit of ecchi too and a romantic plot. The ending is conclusive and it stays with the same atmosphere for the whole duration, what more can you ask? It's comedy gold with some super idiotic and absurd situations, all in the time period of Chio and (can I call her friend?) Manana's walks to school.

Hokuto no Ken (Anime) - Do you like violence? Do you like bloody fights? Do you like men with muscles? Do you understand the concept of honor and in what way should one behave to be honorable? Do you wanna see a big athletic dude trying to save his hot bod 90-60-90 chick (who's also a saint personality-wise) from the big bad guys, turning his enemies into chunks of meat on his way to her? Just watch this show, it's that good.

In your 10+ years on MAL, you must have come across many different users. Are there any users whom you especially like or dislike? Why?

Oh yeah, so many users I encountered here.

roriconfan (@Deactivated101; you know him, he's famous) commented on my now deleted Hyakka Ryouran Samurai Girls review telling me it's short, but to be fair, it was a bad review. I was actually complaining about it being sexy. Yes, I was that dumb back in the day, but it's not my fault, really. The synopsis said something about samurai girls and Japan involved in a war... who the hell would know it was a harem and ecchi with some fights? Let's put him in my DISLIKE mound. We can also put in here the guy who insulted me the other day. We had a discussion about Isurugi Noe and he over-exaggerated, but it's normal on the net. I also don't like that guy with Momo avatar who hates America. He sounds so fake and forced.

As for users I like, there are some I respect a lot.

- @Manaban for his ecchi knowledge.

- Pullman (who goes by @Alcoholicide now) for writing some incredible stuff on Anime Discussion. We had a little chat about Lum one day and the subject is still in the air. How much was Lum an intruder to Ataru's life? At first look, she's just a yandere stalker who destroyed his chances with Shinobu, but at the same time, Ataru never dumped her for good and he had at least three big chances. I still considered that Lum manipulated Ataru with her boobs. She showed him some skin and he got used to it. Shinobu was too much of a fine woman for that but let's not talk about it.

- @deg is your default choice. He is annoying from time to time, though. That "Chainsaw Man is not deep" thread was a mistake on his part for CSM is very deep, but @deg is cool and all.

- ProudAsian was a very funny shitposter. I know he was revolting, but I dig that sorta comedy.

- @WutisDis annoys me with his dumb threads and I think he was the one who called in Moses' boat in my thread. No one calls THE boat in my thread, it was a decent thread.

- I had some pretty cool discussions with @FacelessVixen about Ikkitousen. Dude has some good art in his package.

- Let's not forget about @Deathko. For some reason, he still likes Rei instead of Asuka. Why can't people accept that Asuka is superior to Rei in every aspect? He's a good guy though 'cause he recommended me Kakugo no Susume.

- I still remember the weird threads of Akko (now going by @SemillaMinoria). He was energetic but was logical. He has a very peculiar accent. I know that because he posted a YouTube video where he argues with his boss and some hobo.

- Anybody knows about the 'Big Fat Voluptuous Round Anime Tiddies' dude? I think it was @Adimus_prime, but some say it was @_cjessop19_ (Well, no one cares about small details. As in, no one knows who invented the wheel). That guy was chill.

- That lynx dude (@Luchse) is annoying. Who the hell talks like that? His only good point is that he's a National Socialist.

- @Meusnier likes math a lot. Unfortunately, the only math I care about is sports math, simple. They like Rukia instead of Orihime, talk about taste.

What are your hobbies outside of anime/manga and MAL?

Is drinking booze a hobby? I enjoy spending time drinking some wine or beer or whiskey on the rocks. I don't drink tequila, though I bought a bottle one time, it was ok. I love to try different kinds of alcohol, like that Hungarian Unicum (very good, very good) or some gin (but I only drank cheap gin that's decent, I would love to try more).

Another hobby is watching sports, like football or American football from time to time. I like the Pats but I hate Brady. He's a fake with no talent, Payton Manning was better. His bro Eli can't even throw a football, still a mystery how that guy was a starter in NFL.

I follow some NHL, women volleyball (Sakoda Saori is the best volleyball player in the world, don't care what people say) and lots of other sports no one watches, like field hockey. Forgot about cricket, that sports rock.

valkyri: As a Pakistani, I second that last statement!

I draw a lot, I consider it my number one hobby. I have hundreds of drawings and my magnum opus is a seven-volume-and-counting doujin manga (not H though). It's in the same style as the manga from my blog post; it has the same characters but the plot is majestic. I started it in 2015 and I'm on the eighth volume when the best story arc takes place with forshadowing since volume one. It's mostly comedy but the dramatic moments deliver comedic interpretations. This last arc is killing me though because I have to tie in all the pieces and characters and also try to outdo myself in the art department. I work and because of that I am tired so yeah, started this volume in November 2019.

I paint too but painting is a bit expensive and tiresome, so I have only a few artworks but I don't consider them to be that good. Drawing comedic events is more fun and I have plots for many series but don't have the time. It's cool when I mix in the hobbies like drinking and drawing, some pretty neat stories were born from that.

How do you feel about how the site is run? Especially in regards to the moderators and admins. What do you think about the changes it has gone through over the years?

I don't like the state of MAL forums. Back in the day, it was a site shaped by users (this was literally written on the first page) but now they just care about hyping seasonal anime. We didn't even have seasonal charts in 2014, how the hell did we watch airing anime is still a mystery. I remember watching Samurai Girls while it was airing for some reason but I didn't know it was airing. I thought the pirates are delivering us the anime one episode per week.

The DB is okay but they should invest more energy into old anime/manga, some people actually care about that. I added some characters and made some modifications but it takes too long. They add a 25th pic to HanaKana but they don't wanna add even one pic of Katayama Shu. I spend my time cutting the image but they don't add it and they added my SumoMomo characters after five months whereas they spend only one day adding One Piece new characters. I don't agree with that.

Funny how A-P has a dark mode but MAL doesn't.

Why are you so generous in helping people in need?
from @User-Name

It's just that when you came to me asking for help with anime and stuff, it reminded me of myself when I had to download anime from my friends' homes in order to watch them at my place because I didn't have an internet connection. You're a cool guy so I wanted to help at least a little.

Since you are an ecchi fan, who is 'Best Girl' for you?
from @deg

This is way too hard, it's like choosing your favorite child, but I'm not a politician so I have to give a straight answer. My best girl is Clare from Claymore, she is the perfect representation of the cool chick having a revenge story and I love revenge stories. I like her personality and style and she's not ashamed to love someone. Yes, I know Raki was a brat when she took him but he got older, they can bang with no problem. Or at least I think they can. Clare's body may have some hideous side effects of yoma. I also like the fact that we can see her nude in the manga. We saw all of her and guess what, she didn't punch Raki when he saw her like that (it may be a spoiler but it doesn't matter).
It always makes me angry when we don't see at least a glimpse of nudity with my fav girls. Do you realize that we never saw Mikasa even half naked? That's the biggest mistake Isayama did (but he probably can't draw naked chicks so I'll give him that). I'm saying this because old anime like to add in nip slips, look at Gundam, Ideon, Urusei Yatsura etc. Creators those days had more guts: they read the death threats and they laughed about it... and now they cry on social media. Anyways, Clare best girl.

Here's a list of my best girls

How did you come to be such a big and loyal FC Barcelona fan?
from @SemillaMinoria

I followed their games since 1999 and I liked them because they were against the system, against everything that Madrid stands for. Then one day we lost because of the refs and I got super pissed. Add to that Figo who betrayed us and left for the rivals, I just started to love Barcelona and keep cheering for them. I love their way of being and their ideals, love grew in time.

I like Barcelona because they are basically my story. They fight in the same way as me in the world, they fight against Madrid in La Liga, they fight against the Spanish government, they fight against big teams in Europe for UCL trophy, and I fight in this world to live my life. When Barcelona wins trophies, I feel that I can do the same. I can climb the top and I have to try it because I am a culer, I have to do something worthy of FC Barcelona heritage. I can't be a failure and their fan in the same time. That's why I give it my all at work, which is pretty hard sometimes but I have to do it, I have to win.

Non-football watchers can't understand what's in the mind of club fans but I'm telling you it's the real deal, living with a club in your heart gets you somewhere.

Is there anything or anyone that you can’t live without?
from @SemillaMinoria

I love my parents so yeah, in regards to things, I don't know, I get used to it in time. But maybe drawing, I can't imagine myself not drawing, so I guess I can't live without pen and paper. Imagination is fun and all but I need to get that out from time to time. I think I can live without alcohol but it'll be hard so I plan not to do that.

And the obligatory FC Barcelona, couldn't live without my team.

You’ve been active on MAL for some time. Does anything ever take you by surprise around here anymore or do you feel like you’ve seen it all already?
from @SemillaMinoria

Surprises sure do happen sometimes. There could be a new user that makes fun threads or a MAL site upgrade, never in my mind did I think that MAL will make the VA page that cool to use. I thought it'll remain the same.

Who is the best female character in Monogatari? There is only one good answer.
from @Meusnier

I can agree that Sodachi is a great girl. I love her story and her hardships. In my mind, she's that girl who only has bad luck but she's trying her best. She's like a war widow who doesn't have any relatives and she has to do a hard job in order to get some food and pay for her housing. She's sad and depressing because she doesn't accept her hardships, she knows she deserves better because she's a good person. I like her cause she's sincere and direct. The scenes of her in the anime were incredible, such raw emotion, you rarely see that.

But my girl is Black Hanekawa because she fights against the world in order to make Hanekawa happy. I like her because she does what she wants. Just look at how the cat opposes Hanekawa's outside persona compared to how Hanekawa looks. The girl is beautiful and has a nice developed body but we never see her cleavage and she is always dressed proper, whereas the cat appears in her bikini to accentuate her looks, kinda like "look at me, I'm hot and I know it, why should I hide it!". Hanekawa is smart so we get the glasses symbolism but she's not all smart, that's why she uses her catchphrase (you know it) whereas the cat is smart but doesn't need the glasses to make people know. She only needs to open her mouth or do smart stuff. Black Hanekawa is the liberation of the individual, embracing yourself. I know she exaggerates sometimes but that's what happens when you lie to yourself and keep your problems hidden.

If you had to choose between stopping to watch football and stopping to watch anime, what would you do?
from @Meusnier

I would stop watching football. Players these days are bad, at least anime gives you something interesting and it varies. Football has to be watched live whereas with anime it makes no difference. I can live with listening to the games on radio, that's what I did in college. The internet was shit but flashscore provided some radio links. Now that I remember, I did some of my paperwork while listening to Anaheim Ducks hockey games at four in the morning.

What do you think people in the anime community could do more, or do less?
from @Sheklon

People should stop copying bad jokes and themes like the FBI jokes or all those Youtuber jokes, just come out with something you made yourself. And I don't know, people should just stop lying about their anime taste. At my workplace, I have some colleagues into anime. My boss is a big Naruto fan who's currently watching Boruto and he loves it. I told him my honest opinion that I don't like Boruto and stuff, no lying from me or from him, that's awesome. Another girl likes Kimetsu no Yaiba, she even painted her nails like Nezuko. I'm saying just be chill, we all love our anime, we win nothing if we insult each other or if we lie to each other. I'm not saying to be respectful, I'm not an idealist but arguing with people gets you nowhere.

What would you say are the three most important things in life?
from @Sheklon

Knowing yourself, sounds cheesy but if you know yourself you won't lie to yourself and you will live a sorta happy life. Then it's alcohol because booze it's cool, it cleanses the spirit and the body, you just need the perfect amount. And the third one is going one time to the beach because there you will feel closer to the bigger thing in the universe. Just keeping your feet in the sand and looking at the vastness of the skies will make you feel better and will calm your soul. There is actually some science to it, which is because of the electrical particles from the water combined with the sun energy and all that stuff. Just go to the beach, it's fun.

In what aspects do 2D girls win, and in what aspects do real girls win?
from @Sheklon

Looks-wise, 2D girls are better. It's art so of course the creators would want to add every beautiful aspect of the real girl. They can make the boobs bigger, the eyes, the hair etc. There are some very beautiful girls in real life but 2D gives you perfection. Just look at these:

Real girls are good because they are there, they exist, you can interact you them and get quests from them. Sometimes they listen to your ramblings and you can have great one-on-one activities with them, girls are fun. But from my experience and personality, it's better if you don't talk too much with girls.

And to close this question, I say that dream girls are better. You can touch them in your dream and they are perfect, you may feel sad when you wake up but you will meet them next night when you fall asleep.

What is your manga/novel/DVD collection like so far? Do you plan to invest (more) in physical collections in the near future?
from @_cjessop19_

I only have volume one of Claymore. I wanted to buy HakoMari but it was too expensive and I checked the translation and it looks weird compared to the fansub. I don't think I will buy more than that.

What are your thoughts on anime piracy? Do you think it's beneficial to the industry as a whole?
from @_cjessop19_

I heard lots of people that pirated their anime came to like them so much that they bought the manga volumes and BDs. I think piracy is more beneficial than detrimental to the industry, no one would have heard about HakoMariotherwise. The only reason the book was licensed is because of the popularity of the fansub and I know for sure it sold in Poland.

Eiichiro Oda challenges you to a Brussels sprout eating contest. If you win, you learn the identity of the One Piece treasure. If he wins, you die a painful death. Do you accept his challenge?
from @_cjessop19_

I couldn't care less about One Piece ending. It's easy to see where this is all going. Luffy will defeat Black Beard on Laugh Tale, then he'll go on another adventure.

If you had to purge one fanbase from the internet, and MAL in particular, who would it be, and why would you choose FMA:B fans?
from @_cjessop19_

The problem with the FMA:B fanbase is that a group of individuals started making bots to promote FMA:B and MAL didn't stop them in time. I can assure you that we are a decent fanbase but this civil war between us destabilized the fanbase so much we came to look like this. Don't get me started on FMA fans, poor guys are hated more than SnK in our fandom. MAL wants FMAB on top, it's good for business. You go to MAL and see an acclaimed anime at number one and you won't think much about it. It's a curse that one of my fave anime got to be in that position. If you look at it from the outside, you will agree that airing anime have more chance to be number for a period of time, but MAL has to fight harder against the trolls.

Also, when was the last time an FMA:B fan insulted other users or started making shit threads? I think it was 2011. The annoying thing about some FMA:B fans is that they disguise themselves as SnK fans and start talking shit about it whenever they got the chance. I agree this is the worst thing to do, they even spoiled just to make SnK fanbase look like shit. I wouldn't delete them but MAL should enforce better code.

You are known for your love of football. What do you think of football anime? Do you like any?
from @RobertBobert

Football anime is not that good. Tsubasa was decent but I can't enjoy that if I'm over 10 years old. I heard about Blue Lock but when I read the synopsis I got a brainache. If someone wants to make a football series, he should just go and read Adachi Mitsuru's works or just watch Attack No. 1 and Major. These represent almost perfectly the world of sports and they have that one cool anime element that exaggerates the sport but it makes it fun to watch, like in Mila when there's a girl who karate chops the ball. You can't do that IRL and you won't have results, but it's not that farfetched and you can totally use it in one game at that level. It was put in there to give the element of uncertainty/different tactics etc.

Which waifu and/or husbando material character would you keep only as a friend, and how would you spend your time with them?
from @FacelessVixen

I don't believe in the friendship between girls and boys. The relationship should go way back to childhood. Spending time together makes people lose their sex appeal, so yeah, the choosing pool is small in this case. I could go with Phos cause she's a rock. She's cool, we could play chess all day long and talk about stuff. I could teach her to play video games, she would love it. I'm positive that love can't develop between us and even from a sexual POV it'll be impossible to do something.

If/when you get into digital illustration, would you use your artistic abilities for good or rule 34? And if for rule 34, which character would you lewd the most and how?
from @FacelessVixen

It's not my thing to draw Rule 34 (I enjoy looking at pics though) but a man is a man. I see myself drawing lewds of Rio (from Burn Up W), that girl is a bombshell. She is my ideal 2D woman from a looks perspective and her personality is great too. You ask how but you know, the usual positions. Hell, I would do cosplays of her. She would look awesome as a maid, high school girl, in an Asuka plugsuit, a cop (oh yeah that's not cosplay, she is a cop).

Why can't I hold all of these limes?
from @FacelessVixen

How short are your palms? How big are those limes? How many are there? Why do you even need limes when lemons are better. In fact, oranges are better.

Can you tell us a little about your hometown, Vadu-Pasii? Like what kind of culture does it have? Is it a small town or does it have a big community, etc.?
from @SexyAligator

Imagine a big village close to a sorta developed city. Vadu-Pasii has the new and the old. We have speedy internet and fancy cars, but we need firewood in winter and people are raising pigs, cattle, and chickens for food even though the supermarket is just around the corner and we have a mall only 15 KM away (kilometres are better than miles). We have the local drunkards and the usual old ladies with scarfs on their heads gossiping everywhere. It's basically Hinamizawa but people are dumber and with more tech. Oh and we make our own alcohol in our backyards, palinka and wine.

Skittles: "It's basically Hinamizawa but people are dumber and with more tech" is literally an S-tier description LOL.

What is your daily routine on MAL?
from @Hrybami

I open chrome and MAL is already there. I refresh and check my notifications, I try to respond to profile comments and quotes. I read some news articles and post if I deem necessary. Then I go to AD and CD and see what's happening, post some replies. I go to my clubs to see what's new there. I go to seasonal anime chart to see MAL's opinion about the current season, then I go to some episode threads. I sometimes post but I mostly lurk. When I'm at work, I browse AD and CD.

Where do you usually find inspiration for your ecchi thread?
from @Hrybami

Usually it happens when I rewatch something, be it ecchi or not, it just pops in my mind, but it happens when I watch some ecchi. I had some pretty good inspiration when I watched Manyuu Hikenchou but unfortunately, MAL didn't care how Chifusa and Eren Jaeger resemble each other or the complicated politics of Ikkitousen. I mean, people think Legend of the Galactic Heroes is complicated but they haven't watched Ikkitousen. All the stuff about Sousou, his connection to Kaku, the battle of red cliffs, Hakufu's battle against Ukitsu. So yeah, ecchi threads come from an ecchi scene.

How many Noein fan have you met?
from @Hrybami

I remember none but that's my poor memory. I saw a few years ago in a very good Noein review on YouTube. The guy wasn't your popular Anituber, just a regular pal talking about anime. I think he was the only big Noein fan I know. Well, there was also that time when I searched for Noein H and discovered three doujin. Those guys were definitely fans considering the quality of the product and it even had inside jokes.

Could you tell us one of your favorite jokes?

A catholic priest, an orthodox priest, and a jew rabbi go skinny dipping. After some time, the beach is full but the dudes wanna go out. The catholic priest and the orthodox one cover their D's with their hands after they come out of the water but the jew rabbi covers his face. The two dudes ask him about that, like "brother, what in heaven's name is wrong with you?" and the rabbi answers with a serious tone "in my congregation, women know me by my face, not by my D.".....

I notice you haven't recommended Houseki no Kuni here, despite being the creator of a Houseki no Kuni fan club. What made you create the club? What are your experiences with running this club, and what do you think about MAL clubs in general?

I just wanted to find like-minded people in regards to Houseki no Kuni. Almost every anime/manga has a MAL club so I wanted to create it in order to let people know that there is a fanbase for HnK and we could talk about our favorite manga. I know Discord and Reddit are a thing but I ain't into that so MAL was my choice.

I don't try to promote the club or get members, we're just doing our thing. It's the Houseki no Kuni way to just sit back and enjoy the view. We post some cool pics, we randomly write one comment on the first page, we occasionally think about how depressing our world is, how the moon is so evil, stuff like that. I would love to get some GFXers but I'm too shy to ask people when I don't have anything to offer. We aren't even that active, we're not a fun club like those CCCers or H&E dudes.

MAL clubs are dead because Reddit and Discord have a better interface and provide better fanbase interaction. MAL was decent back in the day but not anymore. For example, just go to the Claymore Club and you will see how active it was a few years back but now it's like Pieta after it was ravaged by the war, sorry for the obscure Claymore reference. Some clubs are active though and that's nice. I don't think we as a fanbase need "shiny" stuff to interact, just give us a platform where we can post comments and we're good.

Other than Messi, which three sportsmen do you regard as your favorites and why? (You need not limit your answer to football.)

- The first one would be Sakoda Saori who made me love volleyball again. First saw her with Japan Women's team. She wasn't a starter but damn, the way she jumped and spiked was terrific, reminded me a bit of Takahashi Shin but Shin was boring. She only played block-out whereas Sakoda could jump like an 1.85 Italian girl (Sakoda was 175 and could spike at 305). Then I followed her at Torray, I saw her winning a JL title and I saw her loss but her style of play (and her hot bod) mesmerized me. Also, there are plays with her when she attacks from the second line and the attack is like it's coming from the net, it's incredible. Retired at 30 for unknown reasons but who cares. For me, she's the best ever, a true pro and a volleyball perfectionist, loved her attitude.

- The second one is Cristina Neagu, the handball player, been following her since her time at Brasov. She was 18 and could throw the ball like a veteran. She was also cute and being Romanian, of course I rooted for her. If I had to compare her with an anime character she is the split image of Honda Goro. She is a handball crazy who doesn't know anything besides handball. If you listen to her in interviews you will get a headache. She can't talk and she can't have a normal conversation, it's hilarious. And she doesn't care about money or fashion or love (believe me, I follow her on Facebook and I never saw her with a man, some say she's lesbian but she's too dumb to even consider girls sexually attractive). She played one time the full 60 minutes of the game and the extra time (a tough match against Hungary) while injured and she scored like 15 goals with a 100% success of shots on goal. She left Buducnost, the team who just won the Champions League with her as the top scorer to come to her home at CSM Bucharest (a handball team) and she accepted a reduced salary and a weaker team. Just Honda Goro-like things. I shook hands with her but I don't have a pic with her because something wrong happens every time. One day my phone breaks, one day she's pissed and she leaves the court immediately, one day she's assaulted by little kids and I can't get my way through her, etc.

- And the 3rd one would be Sorana Cîrstea because she's hot, I mean really hot. I can't stand watching tennis because these days, players have no talent except for Federer. They have no style and they only know how to hit the ball and who hits harder wins the game and you also have to be using special substances. That's why I like Sorana, she's just hot when she plays tennis. Minazuki Suu should make a manga with her as the main character getting into ecchi situations and stuff.

What would you consider as your biggest strength, and what would be your biggest area of improvement?

My biggest strength is my calmness. I am not smart, I don't work out to get a nice physique, I don't like to take the initiative, I don't have big money and I can barely take care of myself. That's why I think that I can get through the tough situations in my life if I am calm and think things through.

There is a lot to improve. I'm like that car at NFS Level 2, you can just keep adding pieces and stuff on it to make it better for you bought it for cheap but my weakness is that I don't go all the way. I rarely invest energy into things. I am very confident that I can do almost anything but I don't wanna do it, I just want to do the stuff I like. And this shows in my drinking and smoking habits, I'm positive that lots of people in my place would have turned into alcoholics and chain smokers but I just smoke when I want (which is rarely, I smoke only on occasions) and drink when I want. Well, that's almost every day but I rarely get piss drunk.

Do you see yourself leaving MAL in the near future?

I have no reason to leave MAL. They have almost all anime organized (still salty that Iczer One movie isn't approved yet some other lame recap movie is, a mod clearly hates Iczer One) and I like the list. I have an excel backup with personalized info but that's just boring compared to MAL's colors. I also like to write reviews for unpopular stuff and post on the forums. The only way I could see myself leaving MAL is by making a huge scene with insults and swear words and all, stuff that will make the mods ban me but that's just almost impossible.

Do you have any feedback on the interview format?

The format is okay. You send the questions, I answer how I want, I guess the mentioning of disliked users may be a little weird. Well, I did it because you asked, life is boring if you always say lame untrue things and the interview would be boring if the user responds only to good questions that offend no one. I don't really want to offend but I wanna be direct and sincere. Maybe if we formulate differently like "talk about some MAL users" or I don't know, you have smart people in this club.

Could you recommend us three users from whom we can choose to interview in the future and why?

Sure, I can recommend some users:

@Bengofo - Dude is weird, don't like his style but should be fun to read his interview. The way he writes it's as if Voltaire is drunk and talking to prostitutes.
@_cjessop19_ - This man is quite interesting and he's smart. He has a lot to tell in regards to anime and other stuff, he has many talents.
@Takamura-sama - A user I respect because of his past threads and activity on MAL. Dude is fun.

That's the end of the interview. Thank you for your time!

Thanks for the rec. Bengofo’s interview would be a sight to see given he’s China’s number one idol and social credit score champion

Interesting interview, touching on a variety of topics. Appreciate the honesty and substantive responses. Will take a gander at your comic and some of the titles you mentioned (surprisingly enough, I have seen Noein).

Just coming there to mourn on a removed user.

- @Meusnier likes math a lot. Unfortunately, the only math I care about is sports math, simple. They like Rukia instead of Orihime, talk about taste.

It should be clear that Rukia is the natural choice for Ichigo (Renji is as useless as it can get), and she is simply an outstanding character; remember her fight against the Number guy? Has Orihime have any such moment in the story? The biggest tension was when Orihime made dinner out of leeks and jam, that says enough.

A lot of text to say that you like lingerie over pajamas.

Surprising reply! Thank you for taking the time to reply.
