Tencent Holdings Ltd. led a stocks rout after Chinese state media decried the “spiritual opium” of games, prompting the company to broach a ban for kids and triggering fears Beijing will set its sights next on the world’s largest gaming arena.

China’s most valuable corporation joined rivals from NetEase Inc. to Nexon Co. in a gaming selloff after an outlet run by the Xinhua News Agency published a blistering critique of their industry. The Economic Information Daily cited a student as saying some schoolmates played Tencent’s Honor of Kings -- one of its most popular titles -- eight hours a day and called for stricter controls over time spent. The online link to the post was removed hours later without explanation -- then restored to the paper’s website late in the day but with narcotics references stripped out.

Tencent then followed up with a pledge to further limit play time for minors -- to just an hour during weekdays and no more than two hours during vacations and holidays. That’s a step up from restrictions imposed by China’s gaming watchdog in 2019. It also plans to forbid in-game purchases for under 12-year-olds, starting with its signature title. And more dramatically, the company broached the possibility of the industry banning games altogether for those under the age of 12, without elaborating.

Tuesday’s rapid-fire developments stoked fears Beijing will next train its attention on an arena that’s pivotal to the bottom line of media giants from Tencent to Apple Inc. and Activision Blizzard Inc. They come after a couple of tumultuous weeks for global investors that at one point wiped out more than $1 trillion of market value. Since July, the government has effectively frozen overseas listings to safeguard data security in the wake of Didi Global Inc.’s controversial $4.4 billion IPO, and ordered a swath of after-school tutoring businesses to go non-profit. Those actions demonstrated Beijing’s resolve to go after private enterprises to address social inequities, seize control of data it deems crucial to the economy and stability, and rein in powerful interests.

“China, in this regard, is in uncharted waters and needs to tread the path carefully,” said Aidan Yao, Senior Emerging Asia Economist of AXA Investment Managers. “A lot of the recent market volatility is, in my view, a result of investors not knowing what Beijing is up to, that inadvertently erodes confidence in investing in this market. The latter is a key risk that needs to be carefully managed.”

A large video game industry is one of the few instances of soft-power exerted by China that isn't immediately shunned by the international community, and now they're spoiling it. gj

What do you expect from a country that commits genocide and has a massive inferiority complex they're trying to compensate for? Small dick energy begets small dick energy.

I mean, gaming addiction is real.

I used to play a fuckton of games (I played less now thankfully), and I lost a hefty amount of time in order to be productive.

Hopefully with this, their productivity and GDP increases.

China did NOT commit any genocide. The AmeriKKKan Empire, however, builds their country throughout a history of genocides over genocides, and is still happening via their proxy which is Israel.

Forbidding in-game purchases for kids is honestly understandable, you can never tell how crazy kids will go with spending...
But everything else sounds like Tencent is just asking for a shitton of children's tantrums. I predict that this will not go well for many parents.

Children as young as six have been known to play Honor of Kings all day, every day. Unhealthy is an understatement.

Addiction is difficult to eliminate, but a step has to be made.

The comparison with opium, although unoriginal, seems very apt to me. Not sure that this is the best way to handle this problem though.

Well China does have a serious gaming addiction problem where people even game themselves to death but I'm not sure this is the best solution.

Aren't you usually more anal about quotes? Maybe that only applies to when it's a Frenchman

Keep your irony for yourself, Mr. Precision. The citation was truncated but it was nevertheless accurate.

Yes but not how some people interpret it when it's quoted that way. When shortened it sounds harsh and judgmental about the religious but it's more sympathetic than that.

there is only one addiction it's called dopamine. you can't get rid of it either unless you want a bunch of suicidal depressed people.

anything can trigger dopamine response depending on the individual meaning you can get addicted to anything.

Pretty ironic seeing tencent do anything about gaming addiction consider they even make kids games like Pokemon Unite pay to win. Lmao
Kids really do need moderation on how much games they play from their parents tbh. The fact that so many kids have open access to an unfiltered internet amazes me.

Kids getting glued to screens and without the discipline to stop themselves is an issue. Most of the socially awkward teens we have now is the ones that just shut themselves in the room for comfort.

Plus last thing I want to see is another kid stealing they mom’s credit to roll thousands on some gatcha waifus. Honesty would want the Japan or American games to learn from this.

If you're willing to ignore the genocide of Muslims in China then you're just as delusional and psychotic as the "AmeriKKKan Empire".

Because the "Uyghur genocide" is as real as the reactionary republican's claim of "White genocide".

I mean, first of all, SINCE WHEN WESTERN WORLD CARES ABOUT MUSLIMS? It's totally a lie. Remember when France president Macron said something that offend the Muslim? And Turkey's President Erdogan was among the first to condemn Macron for it, as people are already know that he's a hardcore Islamist. But why did Turkey crept closer to China as day goes??? Someone like Erdogan is supposedly cared far, far more about Muslims more than Biden or Boris Johnson etc.

Same with countries like Iraq, Iran, etc. And guess why?? Because it's actually just an education center instead of the so-called "concentration camp". All these Muslim countries (including mine) have sent numerous amount of delegates to see themselves how the condition of the education center is. All of them approved it.

These "Uyghur genocide" lies came from the mouth of a far-right, evangelical christian conspiracy theorist called Adrian Zenz, who are delusional enough to think that he's a messenger sent by God to evangelize the Uyghurs and end's China's "tyranny". The west only pretends to care sbout the muslims, while in reality, their countries reeks Islamophobia.

read my reply to the abovr user.

Also social credit system is just a system which also exists in the western world. You gotta be very delusional if you don't think that the police don't wrote your criminal record if you commit criminal act, or that the bank will wrote your track record of loaning so you can't loan too much money and get away with the payments.

Last I checked, the US doesn't have a system that bans travel or school admissions, penalizes others who interact with you, etc, etc, for having "low scores".

Damn, son, you're thirsting hard after that little orange bear.
