Holy Hell. Poor Subaru. I can only assume a few things about the winter. A) He legit spent months knocked out. B) Either Puck or Emilia made snow fall. I highly think puck because he is more Powerful but he hasn't been around. So, it could be Emilia if she is in a very emotional state. C) Some other entity
But damn those rabbits. That entire world is freakin morderous.
I felt for Subaru, especially since he has had to keep all this return y death to himself. Maybe next vid will be something similar to a recap of his journey and his experiences. But, they prob won't.

Because he simply didn't. He had a complete emotional shutdown as a defense mechanism (not consciously pretending) after Episode 14 which lasted an entire loop, and it took some MAJOR shocking events happening in front of his eyes to urge him into action. And when he does, the anime makes it plenty obvious he's not mentally all there in episode 16.

How was he, "not there" in episode 16?

@fullofregrets09

That's...now exactly how insanity works though. Firstly, there are different forms of insanity. In Subaru's case, it appeared like he went insane in the sense that he wasn't able to be aware of what was happening around him. But he was, as the anime points out. So, people will be still saying that this season is worse than 1st one?

I mean, I think it's because it's not as fast paced and dramatic as season 1: it's just one big arc.

You make a good point. Honestly, four years ago, that’s how I saw it. I saw Subaru acting like he was mentally broken for pity points. He wanted someone to see his pain, someone to feel sorry for him, someone to know what he was going through. He was aware of everything that was being said and everything that was happening, made apparent when he went into a rage screaming Petelgeuse’s name that he shouldn’t have know had he been unaware. So he put on this act. But I can also see the other side saying that Betelgeuse is so overly crazy, and so obsessed with not being slothful, that he sees everyone else’s insanity as tame in comparison. It could also be his ego, his pride in his own insanity talking. I don’t know what to think anymore lol.

Wow, I honestly teared up when Subaru told Echidna about RBD. Finally.... Finally. he. can. say. it. I'm so happy he got to tell someone, that he got to utter the words and share his frustrating secret and get some understanding and comfort in return. Although, I have to say, I don't dare trust Echidna just yet. She is the witch of greed after all.

If this was any other anime i would might be fooled, but not with Re;Zero! Here everything is a enemy. Whales, rabbits, Subaru walking through manor all alone at night.
I know right xD I don't trust ANYTHING in this anime anymore. That includes cute girls, nice guys or promises of friendship or help. If Re:Zero has taught us anything, it's that you never know who or what might kill you until it happens.

This episode really had me at the edge of my seat, it was over so quickly. It gave us many more details and clues and I'm still racking my brain trying to figure it all out (while loving the mystery) - Roswaal's words and his true goals, who he really is, Beatrice's role in all of this, her contract, her "mother", the different gospels (including the "defect" ones!), who Petelgeuse was to her, who Elsa is working for, the requirements for entering the tea party (twice!), the rabbits and the mysterious snowy landscape (at first I thought Subaru had entered Emilia's trial by accident), the sanctuary's "eyes" in the forest that gave their escape plan away to Garf, Rem's self-interrupted words about who and how important Subaru is to Roswaal, Otto and that gem he was offered by Garf in the previous episode...that scene cut before Otto gave his answer and I'm still not entirely sure we got the whole truth of the matter. Or perhaps we did, seeing what happened to poor Otto this episode. :(

And that ED. Aaaah it's so good!

Amazing season, AMAZING episode.

Yeah okay death porn we get it. Also Garfiel is such a bore of a character. But Subaru finally getting to talk about his return by death and breaking down like that was pretty big payoff.

I have so many questions! (Also, F for Otto.)

Are the rabbits gluttony witchfiends like the white whale? Were they part of some barrier trial or did Subaru actually go full-on Wip van Winkle?

When Subaru got eaten, did he die and return by death to the normal starting point ('cause he's with Emilia), or did he pass the second trial 'cause Echidna said something about meeting a qualification? Or is her meeting qualification separate from the trials?

The standard episode, but heck, it was a dark episode unlike any other seen so far in Re:Zero.

Subaru's deduction of Roswaal's way of doing things, plus the assumption of Beako being a witch cultist (which Roswaal quickly debunked it). Beatrice being an ally, and Roswaal's figure of speech to Subaru, it's still early to tell who's the real partners and enemies.

With Otto's rescue last episode, asshole Garfiel truly is exasperated and not even Ram can stop his rampage if Subaru is to get out of the Sanctuary. His beast mode was ONE HELL of a giant tiger, but Otto, the Arlam villagers and Patrasche's sacrifice was the "be-all, end-all" shudder moment to truly die for.

The rabbit scene, the shock factor multiplied and amplified TO THE MAX. I legit teared in dismay of the sheer horror, that was extremely unsettling to see one of Subaru's worst deaths in quite a while.

Back to Echidna'a tea party for a 2nd time, Subaru has become more forward with her, creating that Tsundere moment and hilarious conversations. To serious implications, his "Return by Death" method revealed to Echidna, and her embrace of care to Subaru was all it took to be a real tearjerker. This moment is what Echidna stans have been waiting for to claim her as waifu material next to Rem.

Truly the teaching of "The Value of Life".

Exemplary episode, and HOLY HELL is this one of the best episodes to add to the Re:Zero catalog.

I hate it when LN readers tell me "you're gonna love the echidona" and i feel utterly defeated because indeed, i loved her from the beginning, but holy shit, I know I'm simping really hard but that gal is 2 steps away for entering my top 10 anime characters (after 2k+ animes its not that usual for a 12 cour character to enter)

but man...the rabbits, guess the guy is not going to make any more snow rabbits after that

Holy shit that death was probably the most fucked up so far.

It seems Subaru is just getting poblems piled on problems.. First the Mansion, then Garfield and now murder Rabbits...guess he won't be doing the remaining trials anytime soon.

At least we got some valuable info.

Beako is not an enemy.

Those markings on the rabbits are pretty similar to what the White Whale had, I wonder if there is a connection.

Satella's influence doesn't reach Echidna's place. Maybe because it's taking place in Subaru's mind to some extent? Still at least he was finally able to talk about his ability with someone, that should restore more of his sanity now.

Poor Subaru holy frick. He just can't catch a break.
New friend? Nope, dead. Someone you thought might be good? Nope, giant tiger who kills indiscriminately.

Then, of course, the rabbits. The rabbits, oh no please no. Having read the web novels I didn't expect this episode to have that much of an impact on me, but... the voice acting, the camera angles, close ups, everything made this absolutely horrible in the best way. Echidna shows up and saves Subaru from mentally breaking though, so that's cool.

Holy...this episode...I swear, Re:Zero is incredible at riding a fine line between suffer porn and wholesome. Keeps me so engaged, but my gosh is it emotionally exhausting. The scene with Echidna this episode...my heart. He finally got to tell someone and the anguish he felt, I felt so bad for him. And yeah, her character makes her motive for wanting him to open up to her not exactly altruistic, but she really is amazing for letting him tell her stuff and caring about him even a little.

Thus why I believe RE:Zero is one of the best Isekai ever.

The emotional impact, emotional investment, characters dynamic are all way too powerful.
The setting and plot is also extremely intriguing and you'd always be excited what happen next without able to guess what'd happen.
Every casts are extremely flashed out, even the random villagers is pretty memorable.

The author of RE:Zero took everything good about arc 2 and arc 3 and pile them all up on arc 4.

Also RE:Zero is probably one of the very few light novel authors I've seen that execute the theory of Butterfly Effect so flawlessly.
Each arc, the sequence of event happened differently because the mentality of Subaru changes after each return from death.
For example, in the first cycle of arc 4, Garfiel trusted Subaru because all his action are genuine and without any ulterior motives. He genuinely cared about everyone, including Emilia. However in the 3rd cycle , Subaru mentality changes because now his goal is to get information/ use people around him to achieve his goal of saving everyone in the mansion. When Subaru acted like that, especially not acting in a way that genuinely care about Emilia, people around him notice too. This includes Garfiel, thus why he completely distrust Subaru , believing he must be connected to witch cult in the 3rd cycle.

It is all those little things that make RE:Zero such a good watch.

Amazing episode, the season feels to me like its finally getting to the interesting/good point of this half of the season not that the earlier episodes were not interesting or good its that nothing happened that gave as much of an impact as this episode. Favourite scene was with Echidna really makes you feel for Subaru as hes finally able to release his pent up emotions. This weeks episode also gave me the final push to decide that Echidna is the waifu of re:zero managing to take Rems top spot and the spot of waifu of the year thus far and giving me the confidence to say that she will stay waifu of the year as no one can beat her.

I love Echidna.

Not quite. He definitely broke episode 14. Although I don't know where the heck the tweet is, the author noted that when Betelguese was saying Subaru was "faking" his insanity he was basically him calling Subaru a scrub at being insane. Kinda funny. I'll look for the source for this, and show it to you guys when I can

Aaaand im new member of Echidna's fans' cult
i know understand why you were saying Echidna is the best girl

Again, felt like they downgraded some animations... but overall this was awesome episode.
I cried with Subaru when he finally managed to tell someone about everything.
I was sure Subaru would go cry into her laps or smth but at least she came to him so we got great scene anyway.

I only hope they won't make her next 'two-sided' character like Roswaal and others and she will help him, be nice to him while using him for her plans or smth, but she will turn out to be just "good" witch of greed.

the only thing i disliked was how he was trying so hard to escape like he was going to. We all know and he (should at least...) that after 3 days everyone in the mansion would be dead so he just had to restart anyway, but i guess that's a little plot hole to drive story into scene with rabits and then with Echidna

continuing my current theories:
How i was guessing 2 episodes ago, i still think we might learn that Frederica is not that good or at least because of her pact (from what i understand, she only work for Roswaal, but the person she has a pact with is someone else - but some people say he is the one).
Why? Because of the pact, we don't know if we can trust her. Even if she don't want to do anything bad, her master wants nothing good for Emilia.
Also i think she was the one who helped Elsa get to the mansion. With Subaru's second try, we saw mabeast inside. The only way it could get it was if the barrier around would not work in some place and we heard that she went to check on it just a moment before and when she came back, she didn't say or didn't look troubled because of something being not right.
I would even go with theory that Frederica's master and Elsa's master could be same person/people/group.

The only thing that doesn't seem right are their discussion. When they were talking, she was suprised when Subaru told her (ONLY) about teleportation. But when Subaru was talking about it inside the Sanctuary, they were talking about explosion (only explosion, don't know yet if it's just the way they word it or if it's important). I guess she could not know about how amulet will work or something else triggered the teleportation. In today's episode, Subaru was teleported again, if i'm missing something relevant here, could someone explain?

Elsa... after watching this episode, now i'm sure thanks to her wording in the first season (kankeisha na no ne (from japanese it was hard to tell if it was more like "so you are one of them" or more like "so you are one of us (connected to elections) but thanks to some user who was after english version, we know it was first one) and what we learned now, i confirmed my theory about her. Elsa works for some group connected to witch cult.
They have access to second book of mentioned books that tells you what's going to happend (first of course Beatrice was holding). She had not up-to-date info since she moved into action that's why she was suprised second time that Subaru was already in the mansion - you can't explain it otherwise, she could know about who is in the mansion thanks to some spy or someone betraying but she wouldn't be shocked that Subaru is "3 days too fast"
(but this thory can still fail though, if somehow someone from elections would have the book, and we would read "so you are one of them" as just Subaru being part of Emilia's team, this would mean she is not working for the cult... but that's just overthinking it)

Let's not forget about mysterious attacker from first season who was controlling the mabeasts. She.. or he... was for sure member of witch cult, Can we assume it can be the same person Elsa named in front of Subaru?

To be honest i still don't quite get what "Witch cult" is. What structure it has, what sins have to do with it and how big it is. I'm starting to think it might be bigger than we think and be parted on some groups inside, possibly some not friednly between eachother (?) (each sin own 'faction'? but White Wale was apparently one so it's probably wrong idea)

Beatrice... i think there is nothing more too add here above what today's episode is telling us. Roswaal confirmed for us she isn't bad, we can safely count her into the harem.
I can bet her "mother" she is reffering to, is noone else but Echidna. Roswaal's family protects her 'domain' and name. They have forbidden library with biggest collection of knowledge so yea..
But for more "shocking facts" we have to wait until Subaru will finally ask Beatrice the question and we might learn something interesting.
Could it be connected to the fact Roswaal wants to kill the dragon? If they are connected to Echidna, do they have any conenections to the sins?
And why Roswaal wants to kill the dragon (or even Take Revenge - what we could tell from his face) if dragon was one of who helped seal Satella (And she was the one who betrayed all other witches (what we learned from Subaru's fist tea with Echidna :P). unless he lied to Subaru, 101,5% he is not willing to help Satella.
(Also for her as a character, i wonder if they go more deeply about her character and adding 'probably' to the end of every sentence, people look for a deeper meaning but "kashira" (translated like "probably") is not that rare to used in animes and some girls also use it in rl.I don't understand why she is doing what book says but if we were looking for something her "kashira" could be because of her loosing her free will and not knowing what she really want anymore or smth)

When we talk about Roswaal, one more thing still bothers me. We know in the end his doings are for his own sake. Beatrice is one thing but what about the Sanctuary? We still know not a lot about what's inside, people living there etc.
Why the heck he would go so far hurting himself to take down the barrier? It could be explained by him simply being inside with everyone (could't leave safely with everyone without taking the barrier down first), having no access to the book so had no idea what happens now outside, what Subaru was doing, no real conact (and no idea if person like Emilia who can take down the barier will show up) so he tried himself, but it would be just too nice for him. I try to come up with hidden motive why he is doing it and what we still do not know about what taking the barrier down means (releasing witch? dont think so but maybe some of her powers?). People stopped talking about his motives but i'm sure he is onto something
It's also more than obvious he knows or at least has more or less idea of Subaru's power thanks to the book and it changing. His 'hmmm' 'huh?!' and all other sounds are just too obvious :P But again... would he remember (or at least could Beatrice remember changes in the book) every change in the book when Subaru restarted?

Also not really mine but interesting theory to point out from what i read is what if one of the 2 books we learned about, would be the same book Beatrice was holding aaaand Elsa got her info from? If she would be hired by Roswaal to cut him off from Rem and everything that holds him from supporting Emilia?
Could kind of see it but the problem i have with this theory is a big plot hole in it. Elsa was going to wait 3 days and kill Subaru too, Taking down Cult had a meaning because it strengthened Emilia's position but even if he knew about Subaru's return by death, sending her just for Subaru to defeat her would be pointless as without him she simply wouldn't attack and even after defeating her i doubt it would bring any reasonable good effect.
Also why she would even be hired in a first place to steal Emilia's insignia? Because he was expecting a hero to show up? Saw it in the book? Witch told him? How i said, Elsa working for him is interesting theory but... no :P

In next episode/episodes (if tea party will take more time) i expect Subaru to be a little angry (but more mature compared to first season) and cautious around Garfiel (ffs while spellchecking his name i think i saw possible little spoiler D:), he will leave santuary to save girls in the mansion, Beatrice will get much more screen time, and she will fight Elsa or at least buy them time to escape back to Sanctuary...? But that would mean leaving villiagers alone so it might be the plan but something new will happen, maybe new player will enter and will fight against Elsa and Mabeast kashira

Good episode.

Echidna is already my second most favorite character's of the show behind E.M.T, Maaya Sakamoto doing her so much justice.

I don't think I followed the rabbit scene, why did it happen? Why did the season change? Why were those things there? Will they be explained?

Subaru finally able to let his heart out. Echidna totally called him out on the fact that he would start crying after he got it out which I thought was amusing since it actually happened.

Pretty much what Subaru asked right afterwards. ;)

GARFIEL INDEED THUS TRANSFORM INTO GARFIELD... HAHAHA..

and those Rabbits are mabeast... and you know whats next... SUBARU'S SUFFERING....

And Echidna's proving why she is the best girl this season of Re zero... just listen to their conversation... and for the first time Subaru has been able to say what he wants to say to all his friends--- RETURN BY DEATH... and while he is saying it, his emotions are all over it...

10/10 for this episode.

Another amazing episode. I was real worried Subaru's spawn point was gonna update after he was teleported, the way everyone kept saving him and pushing him back almost made it seem like it would. I knew something was up with the rabbit the second it appeared, I've seen too many cute little innocent rabbits turn out to be blood thirsty animals haha

Part of me still doesn't trust Echidna, I mean she is a witch right? Idk, I just feel like shes still a evil character we just haven't seen yet. But seeing Subaru FINALLY be able to talk about his Return by Death, it was great. So happy for him these past two episodes, he finally had someone tell him they are friends and he was able to talk about what he has been going through since episode 1. Watching week by week is painful. Can't wait for next episode, gonna rewatch this one now.

That being said, it was still enjoyable and we got a few more pieces of the puzzle, although the rabbit scene was a little too ridiculous, even for anime standards.

I wouldn't say that rabbit scene was ridiculous, but moreover, it exhibited to how the aftermath of context prior to the time had shown when the antagonistic side occupied everything to put their mabeasts around the atmosphere of the Sanctuary.

However, it is still stayed questionable to how the antagonists already plotted for this at the beginning, but the abrupt winter is the clue of its time-skip.

Rabbit Scene is, overall, an excellent job of the suspenseful exhibition of "fear of the unknown". If you pay attention to the horns, you'll know what it means for the twist.

Not a lot of words to say that hasn't been said.

I assume his necklace teleported him back to the place Garfiel imprisoned him, and by the time he woke up, either Emilia and everyone else were overrun by a different enemy that summoned the mabeast rabbits, everyone evacuated EXCEPT for him, or everyone else were killed/died and Puck went wild. The last scenario is the least plausible, but the first one makes the most "sense" to me but the answers will come soon enough.

Garfiel would be an extremely valuable ally against Elsa at the mansion. I'm sure Subaru will recruit him after witnessing his power first hand (plus he has a knack for winning people over, as Garfiel said, meaning that not even Garfiel is immune to his charms.)

I wondered if Satella's curse could overwhelm the powers of the other witches, since Subaru seems to be unaffected by the curses of Gluttony and Sloth (He can remember Crusch and Rem, he could see the Unseen Hand) but it's interesting how in her realm it doesn't matter. Still suspicious of her though.

- Otto's death was completely predictable after the huge Death Flag from last episode.

- But something was really odd. Garfield blood rage looked out of place, because until that moment there was no reason to see him as a villain. But anyway, it is not the 1st time it happens in the series, just need to remember Rem.

- And the Monty Python Bunnies was COMPLETELY RANDOM. It was the most fool and (until this point at least), pointless and meaningless death of Subaru. Even more than his death to the muggers in the 1st arc.

- If i may guess what happened:

1. Subaru was teleported again by the stone the same way that happened when he crossed the barrier, but we know that it is not automatic, so someone from inside the Sanctuary induced it.

2. The barrier was not released (at this point i believe that ALL the Arc 4 will be only about the Sanctuary and the trials, since this 1st half of the arc will just find a solution, if much, to the tragedy at the Mansion).

3. If the barrier was not released, why nobody is around? Simple, they become Demon Bunny's food, sure. Look at the numbers of that plague!

4. And what are that gore Bunnies? I strongly guess they are result of some SUICIDE strategy by the Sanctuary Faction (cough.. "White R..." ahem...) that don't want the barrier to be released.

Now i'm going to read the Light Novel until the point of the revelation of the end of this episode. Hope something can be more clear without to need to advance in the story.

The quality in the episode stepped up quite a bit. Definitely one of the best episodes this season.
