What do you guys think is the hardest series for a normal anime watcher to get into? This can be because of size & scale, episode count, age and/or art style, genre, not knowing where to start and what order to watch it in, etc. Have you ever been put off by a show because of those reasons, and if so, did you regret not starting it sooner?

For not knowing where to start and the watch order, I think Gundam and Fate are two good examples
For size, scale, age and genre, I would say LotGH
For age and art style, there's quite a few shows from the 70s and 80s.
For episode count, I would say One Piece

My current goal is to revamp all the character details for High School DxD and have all the characters included in the DB.

Gundam because of the number of shows, movies, OVAs, different timelines, expanded universe material and the fact that while the first series is required, it's tough sell since it looked bad even when it came out.
EDIT: I forgot to mention akagi. I had to look up the rules of mahjong and the broken chinese tile names to understand it.

A Certain Scientific Railgun.

The first season of Railgun bored me to death without Accelerator. That's twenty-four episodes most of which consisted me being bored. Then second season came along and the sister arc was fantastic.

This raises so many questions, namely, who is a normal anime watcher, and does this imply that an abnormal anime watcher exists?

OT: It will depend on individual tastes. For me Gintama has been quite difficult to get into. I've started it twice and forgotten about it twice. I love silly, absurd humour so it should be right up my alley but maybe it's just that the first few episodes are unremarkable that's acting as a barrier to my engagement. I dunno.

the fate series, monogatari, lupin, kara no kyoukai, any series that could have different/multiple timelines and different ways to start from.

also incredibly long shows like one piece, dragon ball, gintama, detective conan, naruto, bleach etc. especially for new/younger fans who didn't necessarily grow up watching them

did you watch the first 2 episodes? just start at episode 3. for me it only took around like 30 or so episodes for it to get into. trust me, after the first proper arc it just gets better. the more and deeper you watch, the gladder you are that you didn't drop

One piece because of the enourmous amount of episodes and probably every anime that has so many seasons that it´s practically it´s own universe.

I got up to the 5th episode the second time. Then I just forgot to pick it up again. Yeah the claim of it hooking the viewer after 30+ episodes is exactly why I've been struggling to get into it. I drop easily.

Aikatsu on Parade, since there's 354 prerequisite episodes (+ movies) required to watch it, as well as the willingness to watch idol anime in general lol

One piece, gintama, naruto, dragon ball or any anime with far too many episodes. Let's skip the "normal anime viewer" which is a silly and blatantly nonexistent individual, but you tell anyone who watches anime somewhat regularly "yo want to watch an 800 episode series" or "yo want to watch a 24 ep one" and you'll have a clear-cut answer 99% of the time. I feel it's the kind of anime that you grow up with, if I had to start from scratch now I certainly wouldn't watch most never-ending battle shounens that I did when I was younger, both because I don't have time and because the overall quality is abysmal.

GUNDAM series and specifically Universal Century timeline is not easy to watch.
One Piece as many would say over 900 episodes
Detective Conan same reason

what else?

I'd say anything you're not used to, and anything with a lot of lore.

episode count isn't a big deal because you simply have to start somewhere and not see it as a sprint.

as for where to start? release order is always the right answer.

Best way to watch Gintama IMO is arc by arc, and watching something else in between. I usually set a couple of hours aside to watch between 2-5 episodes of an arc or two (depends on length), and repeat when I feel refreshed. The arcs officially begin on episode 31, so try and push it until then. I flew through all of Gintama in around 2 months

My current goal is to revamp all the character details for High School DxD and have all the characters included in the DB.

The shows that give me an aneurysm are all these super long shows that are also critically acclaimed. I know I have to watch Hunter X Hunter someday and I'm not looking forward to it. I don't even care if it's good or not; I'm sure it is. Just the thought of spending that much time on something everybody already knows and loves bores me to tears. But I have to do it if I wanna complete every anime in existence.

Detective Conan. Even as a big fan of long-running shonen anime, I just can't get myself to start watching it. It looks like this series is the only anime where I have a problem with large amount of episodes. I never had the same problem with Naruto, One Piece, Gintama, Bleach, Black Clover, Dragon Ball, DBZ, Ranma 1/2, Slam Dunk, Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu, Hunter x Hunter, Yu Yu Hakusho, Yu GI Oh, or any other long-running anime I have already watched.

Is it because you've seen enough long running shows and you cba spending another few months starting another one? (though I'm not looking forward to starting Conan as well as there isn't a onepace equivalent for the series (+dozens of movies and specials))

a) I think it's pretty sane to appreciate the existence of porn as such as something relatively normal, cause it is. It's the nutcases who hate all porn in general and can't appreciate its existence at all.

b) The thread only asked about what was hardest to get into and I still stand by that. Getting over vanilla hentai would be much easier than getting over scat hentai or guro or whatever the fuck else is out there.

With porn, the only thing I'll appreciate is Johnny Sins' existence, the rest is just filled with disgust as I wonder what I just watched. I should probably say: 'appreciation' for fucked up hentai, instead of normal hentai.

as much as I love detective conan I'll have to agree as well, it was hard to get into. the daunting amount of episodes aside - the old style animation at the beginning, how after 100 episodes it starts feeling kind of repetitive and together with all the fillers... I almost gave up. to truly get into it I think you'd really need a lot of motivation to sit through everything, which is the only way to fully appreciate the main story and its characters.

I think an ecchi show would be harder to get into if you are a non anime fan. Something like Highschool DxD or Monster Musume or Ishuzoku Reviewers where the amount of full frontal nudity is over the top would be strange and possibly off putting for people who didn't expect anime to have this kind of graphic content.
Hunter x Hunter is a 1/10

Monogatari series, because of the confusing viewing order and it's style.
One Piece because of just how long and stretched it is (in the anime)
LotGH, it's long and visually, it's not good with today's standards.
Fate series for the viewing order (even Fate fans can't agree on the viewing order)

"The hardest series to get into?"

The hardest for me is to get into anime which I don't like from the start.
Like I don't need to be hooked up, just the title to showing some potential for growing in detection that will be interesting to me...this is what I need...but nope - mainly melodrama, some teens screaming their lungs or power fantasies for people with really boring dreams/needs.

@PrinceCyrill @fleurmorbide the best and obvious way to watch the Monogatari series is to watch it in chronologically, not in release order, as some parts of the novels are adapted later than other parts. Follow the anime watch order on the left

Nah, I enjoyed watching it in release order. I would have dropped the Monogatari Series if I started with Kizumonogatari, but knowing and being attached to Shinobu and her relationship with Araragi in the present timeline makes me more interested in her past and how they met.
