This guy gets it.

In general I have a hard time genuinely enjoying stuff whose main goal is not to sound good (not necessarily tuneful or catchy ofc). Think no wave (barring the Pop Group) and pure industrial.

Far too many genres to mention, so I'll pick some less popular ones =^D

I can literally listen to anything if I like it...

Classic Rock? Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Velvet Underground, etc.

EDM? Tiesto, Deadmau5, etc.

Anime soundtracks? Lain OST, Berserk OST, etc.

The only genre that I do not like is Rap. I tried listening to TPAB, the supposed best album of the year it came out in, but I just could not finish it.

Opera, classical (instrumental), folk metal, black metal, jazz from the 1920s early big band era to some 60s jazz, and stirring martial music like historical military marches and OSTs from shows and films I love that place me back in the thick of certain scenes and moments.

To a lesser extent: Some bluegrass, some general folk music, some industrial metal, and some 60s soft rock. Even some country and harder rock.

The only genres of music I outright dislike as a whole are rap, hip-hop, salsa, and most electronica.

I like a variety of music. I used to listen to hip hop 70% of the time, but within the past year or so I've started listening to more music. Now I listen to most kinds of hip hop, most kinds of rock, and some pop and experimental music. I even like eurobeat. Here are 8 of my favorite songs which are all kinda different from each other. (I also listen to a lot of other music too)

Best prog:

I've had some brief dalliances with progressive rock, but I mostly came to realize that I liked the poppier, more digestible AOR end of things better (i.e., Pavlov's Dog. Some Supertramp, too). While most prog snobs only seem to "accept" the debut, I think all three of PD's first (intended) albums are really great.

These threads can become about listing all genres at some point... but Tanzhu and Spiderland "get it" ;) ... I am particularly fond of the emo/screamo/skramz/math life and the jungle/drum n bass life. Can't go wrong with Squarepusher! I've been listening to Dillinja and Luke Vibert alot these days.

Also, I'm guessing Spiderland is a reference to the Slint record? As a Louisville native, I'm partial to that "louisville-sound" post-rock stuff as well.

Also, i'm surprised that Shibuya-kei hasn't popped up yet. J-rock and J-pop have, but specifically the school of thought that grew out of the Flipper's Guitar and Cornelius and the strange obsession with French fashion in the 90's is some groundbreaking stuff. Plus-Tech Squeeze Box and The Pizzicato Five are so cool. And Cornelius is like... some of the most innovative tunes and production I've laid my ears on.

And just to throw one in there that may be obscure, the Zeuhl music crowd makes some great stuff. Both from France and Japan. Ruins absolutely kills it!

Shibuya-kei is a genre that I find really intriguing, but so far I haven't found a lot of great records in the genre. Cornelius is an exception, of course, and I quite enjoyed the one Fantastic Plastic Machine record I heard :]

Ambient/drone/glitch has become increasingly prevalent in my listening habits. It started as great background music when reading manga or doing some other mundane tasks, but it's gotten increasingly more engaging as time has goes on.
