I don't mind watching them, but I don't swing that way. They're more of curiosity genres.
As for what's better received, I think it's about the same. But depending on where you're at, you might think the other side has more. I see BL everywhere on my side of things (enough to almost turn me off from it.. if I were an extremist).

Not particularly into either of them myself. I've seen a few examples of both though.

Is this a 'xx vs yy' threads?

Girls are prefer Yaoi than Yuri and Men are prefer Yuri than Yaoi, simple as that. I'm neutral btw.

Yaoi doesn't appeal to me and i just don't get the feel for it.

I accidentally stumpled upon a Yuri anime and now i can't stop myself from watching/reading Yuri/Shoujo Ai anime/manga. Send Help
That looks weird with all these /

Yuri sweet and can be hot to look at.
Yaoi I can watch, but I don't swing that way thus don't particularly watch that stuff. Seen few, but as mentioned. Not my cup of tea.

So yeah, like women. Two makes it better :D (romantic aspect or lewd aspect). So yeah, nice eye-candy. Or fluffiness if simply romance.

i'd say yuri but since i'm not that picky i tend to watch yaoi as well because there weren't much titles to go on (snips and subtext on certain characters rarely count for me).

yuri has a weird evolution too before it lingers in drama and tragedy but now we smile and drink tea with the moe.

Both genres glorify the fuck out of rape so I kinda treat them the same at this point. Officially it's for people who like same-sex relationships, but really more than that it's for people who fetishize rape and get off to that. To each their own I guess, but my cup of tea it is not.
I probably regret this post by now.

I avoid them most of the time. But if it can't be helpful that I must encounter one of them, I prefer to see Yuri over Yaoi. Seeing beautiful male characters only is enough to make me drop the series.

Usually, one has interest in the one sex couple if they're of the opposite sex of them. I don't have an interest in females' relationship (I'm a female myself). I don't have that much interest of male relationship either anymore, but oh well.

OP This is very simple. Yaoi is gay and disgusting. Yuri is gay (lesbian but you get what I mean) but cute. As a male I want to throw up when I see yaoi-like gay shit but yuri is cute so even homophobics can put aside there opinions and watch some yuri, find it cute and even fap to it but these same people can't even tolerate gay jokes. Same can be said about tomboys and sissies. Tomboys can be cute in their own way and that pleases some people but sissies are cancer.

Yuri and yaoi are actually not parallels to eachother. Yuri is a general term for any anime or manga with a lesbian relationship, reguardless of the sexual content and target demographics where as yaoi specifically refers to smut for women. BL or boy love is a more general term for male-male works.

Anyway, I don't care about the characters gender. I just care if the anime is good.

There's no right or wrong it depends on ppl's preferences really.

I don't mind me some Yaoi. I'm all for the gay lesbian LGBT community. But I'm a straight girl so I hate watching Yuri unless if the anime is good n has a cute nice innocent relationship if we're talking about pervy moments n making out then I'm outie xD lol

I watch/read yaoi. As for yuri, I haven't found anything good.

Come on, there is almost as much of it in heterosexual romances or at least all the things that were supposed to be smut or something, as well. Hear, I speak for western novels not for manga per se, but I bet, it's similar there.

Are homosexual relationships still frowned down upon in Japan? Maybe that's why no good yuri or yaoi animes have been made.

I read both actually. But it's pretty hard to find good yuri or shoujo-ai but in case of shounen-ai/yaoi if you dig hard enough you can find some really good BL. Nevertheless you can find some good titles in both genres.

they weren't ever created to accurately portray gay relationships but ugh...lets break it down first
yaoi
-created by straight women, for other straight women
-fetishizes MLM
-an astonishing amount of sexual assault which is heavily glorified
-the terms literal meaning 'no point no plot'
-(read bara instead which is made by gay men for men!)
yuri
-in japanese this means 'lily' and is coined by gay women in Japan as another term of WLW, can mean romantic or sexual relations. unfortunately yuri is misused as a more porn term.
-unlike yaoi which can sometimes include more shounen-ai themes, yuri is straight up sexual.
-always has girls who look 12 assaulting each other... its fucked
-an obvious male orientated audience and is the vice versa of yaoi in marketing,

just tryna point out that both are really damaging to the gay community, we even have teenage girls call themselves fujoshis non-ironically...

I mean most yaoi is very trashy. But boys think watching a good romance between two guys is bad for some reason? As if watching a heterosexual romance that just happen cause guy and girl touch equals "together forever desu?" is entertaining in the slightest.

The only time i wasnt disgusted (not because i hate gays but because i hate shitty writing) with homosexuality was with Valmar and Kai (the couple of guys that Varus from League fuses with when he needs a phisical vessel). Their relationship was conceivable from my point of view but they were the only ones (it could also help to mention that i dont actively seek for homosexuality on videogames or anime so if i see homo characters i just say "meh" and move on) that i could respect.

Try Doukyuusei if it's up your alley and you're not adverse to it. Probably one of the best romances I've ever seen period.

I prefer Yaoi over Yuri and this is coming from a heterosexual. It might just be due to the fact that it's more natural to me and more of an occurence. I can't picture myself as a girl which probably makes it harder to relate to any form of girl's love. What I can say is that any mention of Yaoi brings out the homophobic side of people, as most anime watchers are male.

Even my forum set is based on a Boys Love visual novel. Drammatical Murder for those wondering.

If you honestly think gay men/women don't have fetishes, including rape, in their works, I don't know what to tell you... Internationally well known ML manga artist Gengoroh Tagame's works can include rape, violence, incest, bestiality, men pregnancy, body modification, bdsm etc. It's just unshameful porn among his 'normal' work.

Also it's not requirement to be gay man to draw bara, actually some women's works also get published in gay magazines if their work includes fetish that appeals to the readers. Same way you don't need to be woman to write yaoi, Mineo Maya for example is clearly man. Honestly more accurate difference between yaoi and gay manga is other is shoujo and includes shoujo tropes and other is more so seinen (while bara is often used as synonym for bear, it's not necessary).
