No idea if this is up yet, and if it is gomenasai i am really bad at using the search bar.

How much (roughly) have you spent on anime related media such as dvd's and music and accessories over the years?

I think i've spent about $600-650 on anime media, and i am about to spend about $100 on cosplay.

Untold thousands. I'm not sure entirely, never tried to count it, but considering I own over half of my completed list on DVD, on average say $120 a box set, 100 box sets = $12,000. But I have more than 100. Movies and OVAs will be $20-60, so another ~$2500 (50x50) there. Though I've bought quite a few box sets on sale for $50, so, I dunno. Somewhere between $10,000 and $15,000. Very rough math. If I counted VHS which I don't have on my list the total would definitely be over $20,000 for everything I've bought over my life.

On DVDs alone, at last check I was nearing $10,000. Adding up all the manga with a few wallscrolls and figures I have definitely puts it above 10k.

That has nothing to do with anything, really. I'd already left home before DVDs became mainstream. While I was collecting VHS before I moved out, I don't count that old part of my collection. Even if I had a VHS player these days, at least some of the tapes I have are bound to be unplayable. Not to mention VHS quality is horrific, especially after entering the HD era. >.<

If you still live with your parents, then just save for when you move out, then you can go binge on a collection. ^^

Lol, but not really. Can't remember the last time I bought any myself. >_>

Though I have quite a bit and some boxsets. I'd say about $300 worth or so ... not "too" much. Purely on DVD's, nothing else.

Yeah, I get told that a lot. "Omg you spend over $1000 a year on anime? wtf" well. yeah. Most people spend much more than that on drugs (including tobacco) and alcohol every yeah. I don't smoke or drink or anything; anime is my drug. :D I'm happy spending my money on it.

Well, 250 VHS (2/5 eventually replaced by DVD, but I did buy them) and 700+ DVDs, many of which were box sets/bargain sales, but many weren't.

A very rough guess would put it at least in the $10-15,000 range, or $1000-1500 per year on average. Maybe more.

Somewhere in the neighborhood of 750 bucks. It would be closer to a thousand but I got really lucky and this store slipped in their pricing of Zeta Gundam. Cut the set from 200 bucks to just 30. :D :D :D

And a lot of that is from the days when I spent 20 bucks per VHS tape. >_< Shame. All that money I spent on 3 eps per tape that I could've spent on full thinpaks. :(

I've spent £400 on external hard drives/black dvds for my anime.

I've also bought:
Yu-Gi-Oh Episodes 1-15 (5 DVDs = £92)
Beyblade Episodes 1-21 (7 DVDs = £126)
Pokemon Episodes 1-30 (10 DVDs = £180)
Pokemon Movies 1-3 (3 DVDs = £54)
Ghost in the Shell (2 DVDs = £27)
Akira (2 DVDs = £25)
Ninja's Scroll (1 DVD = £12)
Mobile Suit Gundam Wing: The Complete Operations (10 DVDs = £78)

I had ordered Gundam Seed but there were problems and I got the money back.

Total - £554 on Anime DVDs ($1124)
Most of the anime I had bought was when it was out newly. My mum absolutely hates anime, so I can't buy anymore also it is damn expensive, its cheaper to download... but I still buy the anime I love.

What does the value of the dollar have to do with ones hobbies? People spend hundreds or thousands of dollars a year on all sort of hobbies, what makes anime any less than music, or modelling, or gaming, or any number of other things?

If kids learn how to save and budget by working toward an anime collection, power to them.

Sure. Why not? I enjoy anime. It's one of my main hobbies and has been for about two decades now. For how long I've been watching anime, I've probably spent around a thousand a year, though admittedly I've bought a lot more in the past decade than the two prior ones, due to DVD releases.

IMO it's better to spend $100 a month on a DVD box set, than $50 a week on alcohol and cigarettes like most people I know.

Yeah, true, and it's okay to spend money on your hobby... but... you don't need to spend that much money, especially when you can so many anime for FREE.

Anyway... I don't feel much envy coz I think that's way to much money. But maybe you're rich so it's okay

also the cosplay+materials for cosplay+accessories arent cheap either
the dvds arent a big part of the budget since u can get everything for free on the internet XP
then theres the random stuff which takes up a big chunk my money as well

Nowadays I'm getting into cosplay which cost a lot too and i still collect of anime plushies! Plus a poster or dvd here and there. Thats about it.

answer: not many, but there was a time when I would buy a few pretty much every week. I do buy anime OSTs, too, but I'm assuming that wouldn't count ^^

question: how is this relevant, seeing as how musicians don't solely rely on album sales for their income?

Sage: nobody is saying getting anime for free is cool. I just think 10k is a ridiculous amount, but then again i'm not trying to judge. I drop disgusting amounts of cash for retro jordans so I guess to each their own.

Kimura: I buy CD's of artists that I respect and whose work is worth keeping. Same with anime. That's why the only anime sitting on my shelf to this day is a cowboy bebop box set, a GTO box set and some of miyazaki's work. I'm sure it will get bigger as I continue to get into anime but I hope you see see my point.....you didn't run out and buy every CD that had one song you liked on it....haha
