What do you personally consider is a good beginning of an anime?

the masturbation scene at the start of end of evangelion, it sets the expectation of the movie being something you never see before or after

Well, it depends on the genre actually.

If it's action, I expect a decent amount of action at first episode.
If it's comedy, same for comedy.
Etc.

The first episode must leave an impression, that is all.

Seikaisuru Kado's pragmatic approach to policy and behavior.

That first episode was just generally very interesting.

Cute waifus with good *plot*. 20/10 masterpiece if first episode starts with onsen.

If you can instill my person with a sense of wonder and not lose it by episode three, that sounds pretty solid to me.

Definitely the first episode of Made in Abyss. It's probably the strongest first episode I have ever seen.

Perfectly said. If first episode is boring or just not that hyped as it needs, its just not something people wanted to see.

I pity those plebs that follow the 3 episode rule. Must be harsh watching sao then since only the first 3 episodes of that garbage is good.

No matter what you think of Tokyo Ghoul, first episode was pretty great.

The first episode needs to suggest some compelling reason to watch more episodes. There are a wide variety of ways of doing this.

It should effectively establish the premise, while hooking the viewer into wanting to watch more. It should provide the kind of experience that leaves an impression of what kind of show it is.

The first episodes of Death Note and Ergo Proxy are shows that I think of when talking about strong beginnings. And say what you will about it not being canon, but FMA:B's first episode did do a decent job of establishing the world, tone, and main characters.

3 things:
introduce main cast
showcase the setting
throw us a plot hook

Everything else can pretty much wait, but if I don't see these 3 things in the 1st episode, my hopes practically fall apart.

Honestly it's pretty good if it manages to intrigue me and keep me interested for the next episode.

Also they definitely need to introduce the characters properly, I hate those kinds of anime that has huge flashy fight scenes right at the beginning that lasts over a minute or two. Then I have no idea who the fuck us who and have no reason to feel anything because I have no one to root for, which really doesn't leave any impression on me at all, making it a pointless flashy action scene
I'm not a lolicon, you're just projecting your tendency to lewd 2D characters.

If your favourite character is Tsutsukakushi Tsukiko, you are my soul mate.

Been a long time since I've been here, I'll continue expressing myself freely and believe everyone should too.

Introduce the setting and make the premise known but without much exposition(IMPORTANT) and many details about what is going or else it becomes boring.

Interesting characters : People who you care to follow and have a good understanding of their motives and personality and are also somewhat competent at least as far as action shows are concerned.

First episode Shokugeki S3 got me pretty hyped. Guess that was a "good beginning".

This season, the opening scene of UQ Holder was perfect. Perfect for making ecchi haters quit it and not bother us sane people.
A good beginning should set the right expectations of the show.

That said, the beginning of Maoyuu Maou Yuusha was perfect too. Nothing like deconstructing a classic narrative with actual thinking instead of diabolus ex machinae.

On the other hand the first episode of one anime about a mad hairdresser boy with cursed scissors and a girl with super-long hair that can't be cut was too perfect. I decided not to watch any other episodes because they can't possibly be that good.

A good beginning is when the anime leaves an impression to you right on the first episode. I can think of some right now in recent memory

  • Food Wars Season 1 - Nice hook with the ecchi. You hardly see them as you watch the anime, focusing more on the food, which is the actual them of the anime

  • ReZero - the first episode (which is a one - hour? I believe) also leaves an impression to me

  • Mob Psycho

  • Princess Principal

  • Made in the Abyss

  • Knights and Magic

When after the OP, the boob grab cliche occurred and heroine blushed and called MC "baka! Hentai!"

Ohhh good times remembering how users will hate the show and drop it because of it.
