By official subs i mean: Crunchy Roll and Funimation
By Fan Subs i mean: Commie, DmonHiro, Chihiro (NOT HORRIBLE SUBS as they are more in the official section)

IMO i prefer fan subs over official subs anyday. they are what created the anime culture and everything way back when CR wasn't around. They also created legendary memes and funny translation notes which always made a boring anime funny. Also is very encouraging to see them work hard on these subs for little to no money. It's sad to see that even though there is an increase in anime viewership, there is a decline in anime fan subbers.
Shoutouts to @DmonHiro you were an excellent fan subber, sad to see you gone but appreciate the effort you put into subbing.

Fansubs obviously. I rarely use horriblesubs unless there's a currently airing show that I really want to watch. And I also need those sweet karaoke lyrics for the OP and ED so that my inner weeb can be satisfied by singing it at the top of my voice.

What is the reason of inserting screens of the dumbest usage of TL note ever (which was an obvious troll from idiots supporting memecartel)?

Of course, I prefer good fansubs over official TLs due the accuracy to source, but nowadays good fansubs almost died.

It's the biggest cancer of subbing.
[start of my pasta]
Commie, gg, Hadena, CoalGyus, Vivid, DameDesuYo, FFF and GJM are/were a pure trash and I will always choose CR subs over those groups.
[end of my pasta]
Only Doki and few not-in-group translators are trustworthy nowadays. Also, I love TL notes (not troll-notes like on yor linked pictures), usage honorifics and non-liberal editing.

Translator's notes usually make the anime more interesting. But quality of fansubs aren't always good. So depends on the fansub group

good fansubs > official subs ≥ meme fansubs

I mostly use HS (aka official rip-offs) for seasonals but when it comes to finished shows I try to find good fansubs. If I can't find any, I go with whatever pops up. If the only subs I can find are too meme-ish or americanized I probably won't watch it at all (droppped Ansatsu Kyoushitsu because of that).

If you're talking recent anime, there's not much difference anymore, as "fansubs" by groups like Commie, Chihiro, Doki, FFF, Vivid, and the like are just edits of the official scripts on encodes from HDTV or Blu-Ray (or sometimes CR's streams, if they're better than HDTV quality).

Official, typically.
Some fan subs are absolutely terrible, if the person isn't a native English speaker. Otherwise official and fan subs are both alright, I suppose.

Fan subs for the most part, so long as they don't go overboard with the jokes. They don't tend to be so 'commercialised' so they are often a little more accurate.

This, basically. Official subs tend to be the way to go, but every now and then there's a series where the fansubs go above and beyond the call of duty, and those are mandatory.

I always say this and i'll say it again.
Official Subs are way better than Fansub.
But that doesn't mean Fansubs are bad, it's just that i don't really like it when someone translating it into their own language and start randomly translating one word into another that doesn't really relate to the speaker but the translator thought it was cool.

This pretty much.

It is even more so in the VNs I tried to read - whenever I got annoyed by translation atrocities, they were "official" translations.
Some could not even be arsed to run a simple spellchecker on their "official translation".

I usually just stick with official subs but if none are available I'd settle with a good fansub. Honestly my priorities are Dub -> Official Sub -> Fansub. I'd also rather sit through a bad dub than bad subs. A terrible dub can at least give me a laugh, but bad subtitles only frustrate me.

Also, translator notes are fucking stupid and the last thing I want is more shit cluttering the screen for me to read.

Also, obligatory:

I’ve noticed declining quality in official subs. Jojo is a great example as the official subs delete all the music references, which is one thing that made Jojo very unique. On the other hand, some pro subs have gotten better. Food Wars is a good example there, as Hulu’s sub actually includes translator’s notes, which is super helpful when dishes unfamiliar to most Western audiences are featured.

All in all, it really depends on the show, but recently it seems imo that fansub quality has only improved while official sub quality has been on a slow but steady downward spiral.

All in all, it really depends on the show, but recently it seems imo that fansub quality has only improved while official sub quality has been on a slow but steady downward spiral.

JJBA is not an example; it's an outlier. Those changes happen because of potential legal issues and lawsuits with bands and music labels, not because of any mistakes or deficiencies of translation skill. "Hmm, I hear Jei Gaairu in the audio; sounds like 'Centerfold' to me!", said no translator, ever. Honestly, JJBA fans dissatisfied with international localizations should blame Araki for throwing in all those legally-problematic Western band names for no reason.

Official subs have their ups and downs, but I haven't seen any steady improvement in fansubs. Sure, the once-mighty fansubbing scene has enough remaining talent to put together good subs for the occasional Netflix-delayed show like Violet Evergarden. But fansubs for lesser-known shows, including OVAs like My First Girlfriend is a Gal, UQ Holder!, or NozoxKimi, have ranged from mediocre to embarrassingly bad. The "fansubs" for the recent Psycho-Pass movies were literally Google-translated from the Japanese Blu-Ray subs. Sure, it's possible for release groups to improve on official subs with OP/ED translations/karaoke, or better timing/typesetting, or by fixing editing errors, but those releases don't qualify as fansubs.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinions, but not their own facts.

What's the origin of the "keikaku" meme? I know Death Note, but no site I go to names the fansub group or if they were serious or not.

Anyway, I prefer having subs. I know some Japanese but not near enough, and can miss cultural context even when I do understand. Dubs change a lot so I usually want the original language.

Between the two? I remember when fansubs were only for when there wasn't any official release, are people still fansubbing officially released shows, or do people just go back and find them?

I kind of feel they can't be compared in ways people are here. Some fansubbers go for a more literal translation, some want it to sound more natural in English. Literal translations are less common in official releases, but now include less easily translated stuff, like Japanese honorifics. Both can be rushed and have become more rushed these days. Translator's notes are also becoming less common in both, and yes, there used to be translator's notes for some official releases, go check out the detailed notes in AnimeEigo's early stuff. The VHS used to come with large pamphlets of translator's notes.

So yeah. I like subs.

Good fansub groups are very few. Except bootlegs I also notice many English subs are based on Italian dvd releases, translated by one person without good grasp of the English language.

But for official subs it sounds weird and unprofessional to go for suffixes. I'd prefer fansubs that convert official subs more to the tastes of anime fans. It happened in the case of Nadesico where they took the official subs and enhanced them. While Violet Evergarden fansubbers did a much better job than the Netflix translation. Same for LWA and other series. While Samurai Pizza Cats official translation proved to little for such a pun heavy series. Unfortunately for old series situation is not as good in general
