It seems like nearly every anime series I've watched has a discussion thread asking if there will be another season. If the most recent season is at least a few years old, the answer is almost always 'no', but evidently that hasn't stopped people from starting threads here or even online petitions.

With that in mind, what are some actual examples of a new season being produced after a gap of several years? (Should be an actual continuation that picks up where the previous ones left off, not a remake/reboot).

One example I'm aware of is InuYasha, of which there were 7 seasons (167 episodes) that aired from 2000 to 2004, then a 26-episode Final Act season was produced and aired 2009-2010. Are there others?

One recent one is, for example Attack on titan, the first season aired in 2013 and the second is airing right now.

Berserk returned after 20 years though it doesn't hold a candle to the 1997 adaptation or the manga.Hunter x hunter returned after quite a while as well though haven't watched it yet,

Ao no Exorcist, Dragon Ball, Genshiken, all of them received a sequel after a few years.

Code Geass will receive one , but it's not safe if it will be a TV show.

One Piece episode 914 & 915 & 1027 were a mistake and 957 brought the salvation - FMmatron

Well there's actually quite a lot of old anime getting continuations recently. For example FLCL or Kino no Tabi or even Code Geass or Eureka Seven. It's a weird trend nowadays and I have to say, I can't be unhappy with it.

There is Toaru Majutsu no Index. The first season aired in 2008, the second season aired in 2010 and the third season aired in... in... in...
Oh, well.

The first D. Gray Man anime aired in 2006. Then, eight years after, the studio decided to make the second season. Impossible is nothing.

Initial D Fifth Stage 2012

If you mean sequels to conclude a story.

Gunbuster 1988-1989
Diebuster 2004-2006

Mobile Suit Gundam MS IGLOO: Apocalypse 0079 2006
Gundam Unicorn 2011-2012
(UC timeline)

If you are looking just for sequels of a series with a conclusive ending.

Its actually pretty common for their to be large time gap between seasons. I think its a poor business strategy, but anime relies on dedicated niche audiences rather than casual demographics so it probably works for them.

Yep, after what, 13 years?

And don't forget Jigoku Shoujo. Mitsuganae aired in 2008, and a new season will air this summer.

Macross Frontier also aired in 2008, and it wasn't until 2016 when Macross Delta was aired.

Berserk got its first anime adaptation around the 90s and followed up by terrible CGI anime sequels in 2016/17. (Counting the TV series only, not the movies)

Ashita no Joe got a sequel in 1980, 10 years after the first series.
I probably regret this post by now.

Mushishi got a sequel 8 years after. It's not too bad because it's episodic though

Cardcaptor Sakura aired from 1998 to 2000. Late last year the sequel manga was confirmed to be receiving an anime adaptation that will begin airing Winter 2018.

So yeah, if a show can get a sequel 18-20 years later, it's definitely possible for other stuff to make unlikely returns to the anime medium.

I think the one that's surprised me the most was Kino no Tabi. I didn't think it was all that popular in Japan and only had a niche following in the US.

Coming out in Summer 2017, Saiyuuki Reload Blast appears to be a sequel to 2004's Saiyuuki Reload Gunlock. I know nothing about either series, but the new one has a new studio and director so I have no explanation for why it is coming out 13 years after the last season and 8 years after the new manga.

Other examples:
Full Metal Panic
Code Geass
Lupin III
Dragonball Super (+ movies)

Ah, so it's not as rare as I thought. Even so, it's probably not much consolation for fans hoping for a second season of Kokoro Connect or Ouran High School Host Club.
