Just curious if there are others similar. There is a lot of discussion here http://forum.novelupdates.com/threads/how-were-you-introduced-to-novels.25060/ How were you introduced to novels I hope it is okay to post a link (newbie here). another poster: First, watched anime's such as guilty crown, one piece, bleach, naruto etc. Began to read manga later on. I happen to come across Renegade Immortal manhwa, and like it for it's unique and eccentric storyline. Meridians, latent talent, "genius", determination and ruthlessness, and human cruelty. Those things i've seen in Xian Ni which alot of Anime and manga doesn't have, except tokyo ghoul. Decided to continue at reading it at novel version. It's quite blurred and hard to understand first, especially those booming there, waving that, strolling here, beauty that, sexy this, and that. Finished reading the latest chapter and i'm still not satisfied. Few days passed and there's still no new chapter, and i realized something's wrong with me. 10 days of reading nonstop became my hobby. I wait for new chapter every hour until i'm fed up. I went to read other xianxia genre novels such as that. Read MGA, ATG, ISSTH, TTNH etc. Until i can't stop anymore. |

I think Chinese fantasy novels are more popular among English readers. They haven't been translated into other languages like Spanish, French etc... So it's just mostly popular among English readers. For example, Wuxiaworld that has about 20 Chinese xianxia fantasy novels have almost 3 millions unique monthly visitors. |

I was reading tons of manga before I started to stream/download, cause internet services were shit during those days. I shifted more to anime when One Manga removed all content(that was a sucky time). I started reading lns (and then wns) in 2011 though. So mine was TV--->Manga--->Streaming/Downloading Anime + LNs and WNs. |

Yeah that's generally how the process goes. You'd be hard-pressed to find someone that started with LNs and not an ime or manga. I don't read LNs so much anymore though. |

If you have time, try a Chinese LN, it will open your eyes to a whole different world. It's very different from Western fantasy or Japanese fantasy. There is a reason why it has gained a lot of popularity in the last 2 years. These are some really good ones: True Martial World Martial World Desolate Era I Shall Seal the Heavens Heavenly Jewel Change Emperor's Domination Douluo Dalu Transcending The Nine Heavens Against the Gods World of Cultivation Tales of Demons and Gods A Record of a Mortal’s Journey to Immortality |

Kinda hard, I wanna get into reading more novels but don't have the time, tbh. I have a handful of WN's and LN's I'm caught up on, and very few chinese novels I'm reading as well. Me watching anime and reading manga also takes time from what could go to reading novels too lol Actually, I think I've fallen behind on the some of them >_> Maybe I should organize some time aside to read some novels. |

I feel definitely more at ease reading good light novels and visual novels.azoth212 said: Kuma said: azoth212 said: Kuma said: I honestly have no intention of reading generic titles, let horror or smut since manga is full of these, plus I tend to exclude manga from the 90s or older. Restrict it even more and there's nothing left to read save for some series that haven't been translated or have incomplete scans.azoth212 said: Kuma said: I guess you're lucky a f then. I'm literally sick of re-reading manga and I'm so fed up with digging for titles that are worth my time that I'm starting to dedicate myself to reading GOOD light novels.i prever stuck in manga after all... already passing anime phese thou since most of them incomplte adaptation... there is still lot original manga around... there is like literaly hundreds manga updated each day (i mean, you got like 15 series from line webcomic alone each day) which at least 3 new title translated each week (not including one shot which like more than 10 each week)... not to mention thousend series already finished translated... how do you even run out titles? it's always either you put your standard too high, or you have too niche taste for manga, or you digging not hard enough... if you want seriously digging manga, use bakaupdate instead of mal... determine generic titles (are you mean harem and stuff like that?) since at least got 3 orders > no horror or smut? okay > no older than 90's? okay > no incomplite scans? okay https://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?perpage=50&filter=scanlated&type=manga&exclude_genre=Hentai_Horror_Smut&orderby=year you still get 160 X 50 title ready for you... and this excluding currently publishing manga... harem and ecchi, yuri, yaoi, shounen ai and shoujo ai is okay, but comedy and school life? that's what excluding a lot (but seriously, most novel also like that)... then the main reason is not that the medium is suck, but the medium doesn't cater to you... you still get 50X40 title ready for you (probably around 30 excluding short and one shot)... https://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?page=40&orderby=year&perpage=50&filter=scanlated&type=manga&exclude_genre=Comedy_Ecchi_Hentai_Horror_Lolicon_School%2BLife_Shotacon_Shoujo%2BAi_Shounen%2BAi_Smut_Yaoi_Yuri |

Chinese fantasy is very different from Western epic fantasy/Tolkien clones. As an avid fantasy reader, Chinese fantasy was a breath of fresh air. A very unique fantasy genre that is just as good as Western epic fantasy. |

Any time I talk to fans about it, it's always about how detailed the world is and complexity complexity complexity. Then I read a non-Tolkienian fantasy - like Dunsany - and the result is beautiful without all these needless words. I wish we could think of fantasy outside of orcs and elves. |

I found out about manga when one of my friends from an online anime community I had joined at that time told me about it and I downloaded some manga reading app (I don't remember the name) it had the options to search by genres, I started reading random manga and enjoyed most of them. As for LNs, my favorite anime series was adapted from an LN so I started reading it, but honesty, till this day I've only ever read 2 LNs. I don't read Chinese or Korean stuff at all because (1) I can't read the language and I don't trust fan-translation (2) Those names are really hard to remember @.@ I usually don't watch/read Japanese stuff where a lot of names are Chinese/Korean either unless they are easy to remember. |

The fan translations are very well done by those who have knowledge of the language. It's like reading a normal fantasy book you buy on Amazon. As for names that are hard to remember, if you can remember Japanese names, Chinese and Korean names can be remembered too. |

It happened because of the website mangaupdates.com. I used it to keep track of the few manga series that I had been reading. From there out of curiosity I clicked on a random novel that happened to be a Chinese novel. And when I discovered the Xianxia genre...I stopped watching anime for almost an entire year lol. Btw, most of the ones in your top are seriously shitty harems |

These are the best Chinese fantasy IMO. And many of these don't have harems. As for names that are hard to remember, if you can remember Japanese names, Chinese and Korean names can be remembered too. It really depends on the translators and the series in question. I've come across some pretty bad ones, the fan translations for Kyo Kara Maoh to be specific and to top it all up with some tend to be extremely biased when it comes to series with possibility of some shipping, literally making arrows or writing as notes somewhere on the page that "omg! I knew it's canon" even though nothing romantic even happened and it's not even a romance series to begin with. Even when I used to read LNs on bakatsuki there would always be super annoying notes giving personal opinion as "official" and saying things like this is what the author actually intended or the author supports xyz pairing. And most importantly when I read the original LN, there were a lot of differences. So I literally don't know which should be trusted and which should not. I can't remember something which I can barely even pronounce or spell. |
