When you see an anime being "higher than average", does it make you sad that most anime are not like that?

The latest episode of Ruri no Houseki had some extra focus given to lighting, and such lighting evoked emotions in me: The relatively "bright white" of a closed window when compared to the dimly lit room it is in, specks of dust being visible from it.
Such calmness reminded me of my childhood.

Then I was reminded that most TV anime doesn't care about lighting at all.

no, because there is enough good media to last you a lifetime. you don't need to bother with the below-average stuff.

I'll bite. Where's the "higher than average" from and how does it relate to lighting?

I also thought that the most recent Ruri was particularly nice to look at and the amount of care that's going into visuals in general, remind me how much I'm looking forward to Mushoku when it comes out. There's a real difference between studios that go that extra mile and really care about what they're putting out there and those that are just generating disposable, forgettable work.

Most tg anime are very good to great, how they utlise direction with full use of lightning colors color palette cinematography/photography that makes every scene even with limited in animation breathtaking movie quality by default and then whenever there are high quality scenes or high quality anime this complements this even further.

My scores usually go above calling most things average, because I mostly watch stuff I think I will enjoy. The anime I chose to watch is usually higher than what I consider an average anime. Anime medium is full of high quality media so I never feel that way.

@Briekimchi
Just look at the scenes from the latest episode, especially the scene where they're at the college club room.

@thewiru Oh sorry, I saw the quotation marks and thought it might be a meme or something I'm not aware of ("Higher than average" could be something else!). I'm not a social media person and sometimes your threads reference something well-known on Twitter, so was just making sure.

By my standards, most anime fall somewhere between mediocre and 'almost decent.' I’m used to this, and I don’t really mind that there aren’t that many anime I’d consider 'good.' In fact, I’ve even come to enjoy anime I’d rate as a 2/10.

No. there's Sturgeon's Law - you will perceive only 10% of everything as good regardless the quality.

"of Ruri no Houseki"

Like the supposed great visuals of this anime are lost to me, since the characters and the narration are not my cup of tea.

Well, most anime are made on a low budget, so lighting effects are the one of the details that get sacrificed for cost savings.

My reaction to seeing an above-average anime is wondering how much better other shows, especialy its imitators, could be if they put this much effort into it, if they prioritized telling a sincere story over copying anime stock character templates. Too much anime rests on its laurels and it becomes boring after a while. A few examples:

  • A good deal of Miyazaki works like Nausicaa inspired a lot of copycats, but rarely as detailed or intentional as the original. Though I will say that simply being a Castle in the Sky clone already piques my interest, because I have simple tastes.
  • Cardcaptor Sakura was actually quite innovative for a magical girl anime when it first came out. Then it just kept spinning its wheels after she got all the cards and I lost interest. Magical girl anime hasn't evolved much since then.
  • Love Live was a series that I thought was pretty mid, with stock characters, but then Superstar S1 came out and completely shocked me with how real the characters felt and actually made me re-evaluate my own negative self-image. Nothing in this franchise to my knowledge was ever this compelling, including its follow-up seasons. But even then, I was glad to finally be able to feel that passionate motivation that other fans feel about other entries in the series even just once.

Time...it will not wait...no matter...how hard you hold on...it escapes you...

No, and if I'm being honest, it seems like a lot of things make you sad...

No, they feel special because they're better than other anime, so I feel happy and content instead. However, I very rarely find anime truly "average". I actually tend to enjoy most of the anime I watch, and hence my mean score is on the higher side.
