I am aware of tsunderes and I do find them annoying. Often in anime I see the girl being mean and calling the guy a "pervert" even though he didn't do anything. And also a girl hitting a guy is seen as comedy? (Not that I would like seeing a guy do likewise). But his is honestly infuriating, and often I see the girls being generally so salty towards the guys. Anime is so hard for me to watch nowadays since I don't want to deal with this.

What anime's are you watching?

Your perceptions will be based on the material you're expose to and honestly out of all the anime I have watched, I can't even remember one which had all the examples you listed.

There is a lot of good anime's out there with much more healthy relationships between the characters etc.

Masochism.

Some people find it interesting to see a "tough" girl/tsundere slowly let down her walls and express her feelings.

This is why I avoid anime with a tsundere as one of the main characters
I can't stand them they keep hitting the poor mc for 23 ep and in the last one they win pfff
anime like toradora / zero no tsukaima / Shakugan no shana .etc are in my black list

Some people consider that cute (don't ask me why) also I agree with Tokis, search for other anime genres, there's more to anime than just tsunderes and slapstick comedy.

I see. Now I remember watching a documentary about Japan by Anthony Bourdain and how "everyone loves being tied up" or some form of masochism. Not sure how accurate it is but it got me thinking.

But it's so common in anime and it makes it hard for me to watch.
Oh well there are lots of anime out there, and obviously the world isn't going to cater to my selfish needs.

hmm. But I see it as a general thing that guys are treated like perverts. I can't think of exact examples since I haven't really watched anime for a while.
I might add some if I remember later.

It's more of a shounen (and shoujo) trope to be honest (a shitty one as well, this and the MC being oblivious to any female interest towards him) it becomes less frequent when you swich to genres such as seinen, josei or slice of life.

1. Drama-addict viewers

2. Another dude on here says a lot of Japs r masochists, so maybe that's part of it

3. That's not true for a lot of Animes. Its true in toradora, Angel Beats (well Yurippe treated girls badly 2), and somewhat in FMA but not in SAO, death note, and DRRR.

It's how anime works. They add tsundere character(s) to make anime more interesting.
dont't watch that anime if you are going to give it 1* and cry 10000 words in review about it.

I don't know, for some reason capricious, versatile girls are supposed to be attractive, since they're apparently less boring than nice girls.
In real life that's not the case, I tried, guys really hate that.

It's just a dynamic meant for laughs. Nothing there to over think or carefully analyze. The guys are never bothered by it long term and it's usually just an exaggeration of the girl either putting up a tough front, teasing, or trying to sort out her feelings for that guy.

I don't think I made it clear enough in the original post, but what I wanted to ask, in a nutshell, was why it is so common in the anime industry.

A few people said it was due to masochism being a common thing in Japan, maybe.

Sure why not. But I don't feel good seeing mc being treated like shit. Whatever man, it's not like have to watch the series anyway. Still feel bad for the mc's though :(

In Japan, girls (the Yamato Nadeshikos, ideal women, at any rate) are supposed to be pushovers and weaker than guys, so the idea of them being strong, opinionated, and violent is supposed to be funny.

You will love the girl from Re:Zero, trust me

About tsunderes, just make sure to never watch Zero no Tsukaima, Louise is just that x100, same in a minor way for Toradora (that is still a good anime tho) and Shakugan no Shana (average at best).

For me tsunderes are my favourite and most hated female characters at the same time, one just has to find the right ones that are not b*tches to the guy.

Give a try to this best girls:

- Takao from D-Frag!

- Kurisu Makise from Steins;Gate (Amazing anime even without her).

- Nanami Aoyama from Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojo

- Stella Vermillion from Rakudai Kishi no Cavalry (starts a bit bitchy but early on the story switches to be absolutely adorable, this anime is quite lewd tho but I had a lot of fun with it).

They are some examples of the quality tsunderes that are so lovable and a blessing to this world.

I think part of it has to do with an attempt to counter sexism in certain genres. A show full of weak female characters might be seen as sexist. Throwing in a violent tsundere is a cheap way of making the female characters seem stronger, thereby defusing the complaints about those shows objectifying women.

Unfortunately it's gone overboard and turned into a cliche. It doesn't emphasize the strength of personality of the women in the shows; it substitutes violence for strength of character, making the unfair generalization that women don't need to be strong or independent as long as they have the capacity to beat up the MC.
