Many people will tell you that many of the anime people find the saddest are melodramatic in their yes- meaning the sad parts felt way too forced so they did not enjoy them because they ddi not know the charactrs well enough or the feelsy parts were too rushed in general.

So which anime to you are sad without feeling melodramatic or forced.

I found all of the Key anime sad. Sure, some of the scenes felt a bit forced , Charlotte is the gold mine of that, but all of the other anime had genuinely sad scenes.

Outside of Key, I think the best Drama I've seen up to date was Tokyo Magnitude 8.0. Gawd that show was just, ugggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhh FEEEELLLLLSSS

Steins Gate and Madoka also pulled at my heart strings for spoilerific reasons which if you seen the anime should be obvious.

Steins;Gate, Shigatsu. Bokurano a bit forced at times. SAO II melodrama was laughable.

Akage No Anne and Full Moon wo Sagashite are the only shows that never felt melodramatic to me(especially the former) and they are the only anime I've cried to.

I have to agree with you on Steins;Gate, couple scenes made me tear up.

Plastic Memories is also another one, which really got me.

Anime before the 2000s were hardly if ever melodramatic. Cheesy at times, sure, but that'it. Example: Rose of Versailles, Ashita no Joe, Ie Naki Ko Remi, etc.

Any anime is melodramatic if just one person find it so, I could say Nana for me was just a rollecoaster of feelings, but for some other it might be all forced drama so therefore it would be also tagged as melodramatic.

Manga doesn't feel forced because it really make you to tie with some characters.
Anime seems like rushed imo,so maybe it is.

If you want my opinion, feels forced with some characters, but I feel genuine sadness for others. However, I never shed a tear for anyone.

I agree that the deaths of the manga, well, the death of the manga (as there is only one death who differs from the anime) make me feel more pity for that character than the others. Is also the ONLY death of the series that made me salty.

btw, Emiya, spoil that shit.

Plastic Memories got me hard at the end. The inevitable drawing closer each other, knowing there wouldn't be any way around it.

Welcome to the NHK! was pretty hard for me to watch at times, too. Being able to relate to some of the scenes was awful.

The ones that try to shove tragedies down your throat and force you to be sad usually tend to be anything but genuinely sad.

I like cheese.
I'm also filled with pure-hearted ulterior motives.

There is nothing wrong with a show being melodramatic. People don't know what the word means so they attribute a negative connotation to it.

Some of my favorite shows are melodramatic. Now and then, here and there, gundam seed etc.

If the purpose of the show is to make you feel sad, there is nothing wrong with with something being melodramatic.

I cry at everything. "Melodrama" just isn't in my vocabulary. lol

But Grave of the Fireflies, while it's sad, it's also rather manipulative. If you watch Bennet the Sage's review on Anime Abandon, that's pretty much how I feel.

What Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 not melodramatic ??

I was thinking of this one when i clicked on the thread. I could only felt "forced-drama" during allllllll the show.

The purpose of the anime itself was to make you fell sad, from the beginning 'till the end: My point of view is that if the sadness is a way to archieve a purpose, it's alright. But if it's meant to be there for 'show'. ( Angel Beats, Charlote, Akame ga kill,...) for me it's the definition of forced-drama, leading to melodrama.

But it was a good show indeed.
( English is not my main language , so maybe i'm misinterpreting the definitons )

For me, it's gonna be : Steins;Gate & HAL

Very very honestly the anime that until now makes cry rivers and I love from the bottom of my heart is still Code Geass. It has a little bit of every genre - high school, shoujo, shonen, romance, mecha, drama... but the story is just so damn well done, and that finale... still makes me cry.
Other animes... Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica, Charlotte; Nagi no Asukara; Clannad After Story made me cry rivers too, but it was too melodramatic and boring until its climax.
I rencently saw this one who made cry, it was beautiful, Rainbow: Nisha Rokubou no Shichinin.

Films: Kaguya-hime no Monogatari; Tezuka Osamu no Budhha; Ookami Kodomo no Ame to Yuki.

Not Shigatsu, nothing genuine about it, so forced.
Clannad AS/Anohana are decently genuine, and then there's angel beats.. tbh these "big 4" sad animes are somewhat forced, lack subtlety and not totally genuine, but being more direct does appeal to a wider audience.

A genuinely sad story needs to be more natural, poetic, like you shouldn't be able to feel the author trying to poke at you every step of the way to ask "did you cry now?", hard to explain this technically. A lot of good one mentioned here though.

Well, a fair amount of series have evoked emotion from me, but limiting it to ones that more or less just made me feel said (and series I don't think are too forced or ham-handed with their writing) would be: Mushishi, Berserk, Trust and Betrayal.
