Who ever beats One Piece (if that's even possible now) in the next year, it'll definitely be the most shocking thing ever. I love One Piece, but honestly is boring to see it number 1 over and over again :/

Kingdom can get those numbers again if it has more anime content. But if it's the status quo with no anime etc. it probably won't even get half of what it got this manga sales year.

The two anime it had didn't even let it sell a third of this, I don't even get how you can think it can sell 8 million again.

Because the anime was fucking garbage, that's why. It's been pretty much universally panned by anyone who's watched it. I've seen people say that they couldn't even get past the first episode by how garbage the animation was. It was really that bad.

Remember, Kingdom got this boost from a freaking TV talk show. A single episode of a popular TV talk show and the series explodes. Imagine what would happen if the series got an honest anime that's given the TLC it deserves. I do think the series can have a significant boost again if given the opportunity. Unfortunately, I don't think it will happen, at least not any time soon.

Awesome to see SnK, Prison School and OPM doing great. It's too bad I can't say the same about Magi, especially because it returned to being a very enjoyable read for a while now.

Also, end of an era. Is this the last time we'll see Naruto chart?
5 main aspects I base my ratings on:
1. Did DramaEnthusiast make a thread about it?
2. Is it better than Breaking Bad?
3. Did MellowJello recommend the shit out of it?
4. Has it caused a (very entertaining) shitstorm on MAL?
5. Is it actually good?

Scratch the fifth point, it's not very relevant...

Well I think we can consider Danmachi to be the real commercial success this year. For a series with not much prior hype or fame, that kind of sales is pretty astonishing for a light novel

If you put a pricetag on Hestia's boobs, you'd literally come up with hundreds of thousands of dollars lol

True enough. On the other hand Danmachi also has its Sword Oratoria side story series which also got 336k+ copies sold this year, so if you add that as well then it's at over 1.5 million

But yeah, either of the two at least

Those anime boost make it in time.

This is actually quite good since the anime is in the fall season which the data only covers up to 1.5 months after the anime started airing and it has less than 10 volumes. Asterisk didn't even make the rankings. Could have ranked higher if the anime had started much earlier this year. Most of the other LN series in the ranking that had new anime this year are either more than 10 volumes long or anime started much earlier this year. Rakudai anime is still airing so we should also see how the LN sale goes in the first half of 2016.

But it's important to remember that a movie review is subjective;it only gives you one person's opinion.

It doesn't matter if you like LoGH,Monster etc.If you are a jobless or college/school dropout living in your mom basement, you are still an unintelligent loser. Taste in anime does not make you a better person. If elitist don't exist, casual pleb and shit taste also don't exist.

Congrats to One Piece, NNT and Tokyo Ghoul. And so long Naruto; you ended on a high note sales-wise.

Now for some analysis and comparisons:

First, a simple line graph of sales for major series since 2008:

Its easy to see the monstrous sales that One Piece has had over the past few years. The other stand-out series are Attack on Titan, Kuroko no Basuke and Magi; not to mention the fairly consistent sales that Naruto has had. Looking just at this year, all of the Top 6 and Tokyo Ghoul had a great year.

But we cant really see what's going on with the other series so we should remove the biggest ones:

There's nothing too important to say other than Naruto having more sales than FT till the very end. Bleach and Gintama continue to have similar sales numbers.

Sales numbers are fine but we all know that they are directly related to the number of new volumes released in that year. So here is the graph with "sales / (# of new volumes in year)":

Now we start to see some more interesting results. The most obvious one being AOT's anime boost being much more apparent with it beating One Piece in 2013. We can also see that Naruto sales for its last two volumes had a nice increase compared to the past few years.

Once again I remove the outliers:

These adjusted sales are a rough measure of the current popularity of the series. It's apparent that Bleach's sales are declining steadily but the surprising thing is that its nothing to get up in arms about. It's sales and popularity are proving to be very stable. Fairy Tail had 7 volumes come out this year (one released on November 17th) so it was penalized a bit more this year. Gintama is also fairly stable even with an anime this year. In short Bleach, Fairy Tail and Gintama are about as popular as each other; but still decisively less popular than Naruto.

Now for some averages over the total number of volumes released:

Attack on Titan immediately shows its remarkable trait: getting insanely popular, insanely quickly. One Piece's sales take on a different form here as you realize that One Piece started 10 years prior to the 2008 data point. Compared to AOT, One Piece's remarkable trait is that it got insanely popular very late into its life and continues its sales feats for years after its boost.

Lastly, we remove outliers:

The average sales are a rough measure of the series's long term popularity. It increases if new readers start catching up with a series and is thus very difficult to see increases year by year. Fairy Tail differentiates itself from the rest of the series early on but experiences a natural decline in popularity. Naruto only had two volumes released this year and not many people were catching up with the previous volumes. Once again Bleach and Gintama are about the same.

Well the sales for Gintama improved so it's still good considering the it's been dropping the all last year. Hopefully it will be enough to keep the anime going. Though i'm pretty certain it will continue because it's a shonen jump series and it's hit a point where they can't really stop the anime, due to the series entering it's main story line.

The anime really did its job well despite being a pretty shitty adaption(With even more butchered last half of the show).I mean just look at the boost, advertising definitely paid off and people loved the LN. I wonder if the numbers would be slightly different it it had more eps and got to this part ^^

Oricon doesn't consider it a light novel series. The "series" list is just the light novel series rankings rather than an amalgamation of several rankings.

Rakudai had 3 volumes out this year as well, incidentally (as did Asterisk). And its anime boost is pretty much over now. Whether or not it even makes it to the first half 2016 list will depend entirely on how many new volumes come out in that time.
