| This thread is for username change requests which you cannot perform yourself. Remember that you can change your own username here. READ THIS POST thoroughly or your request will be IGNORED. You are only allowed one request so use it wisely. This thread was created for users who identify to one username across many social websites, but were unable to have the same username on MAL because an old, inactive account had claimed and discarded the nick years ago. It is not for users to "collect" usernames or change identities like socks. Nor is it for users to claim usernames from active, used accounts. Do not PM admins asking for username change requests. We created this thread to stop our inboxes from being flooded. Do not make a fuss because you did not get your desired username. Arguing with admin decisions will be ignored. This thread is privilege, not a right. Do not block the requested username, or your old nickname, with a duplicate account. This perpetuates the problem. You must meet all of these requirements:

| Oh thank god, this has been a long time coming. There have been many usernames that I've wanted to use in the past, only to find that they belong to someone who hasn't logged in for 5 years and never added anything to their list. |

| Can I say that I'm fully against this Decision? I'm having my Doubts with the Definitions of "inactive usernames": There are a few vague and questionable Entries: 1) "are completely empty 3 months after last online." - what if an Account gets hacked while the Account Owner is away in that Time Frame, just to "free" the Name? 2) "have barely been used (next to no list entries, comments, posts, etc.) and were last online 2+ years ago." - where is the Line between "barely" and still acceptable to come under the 5 Years Policy? 3) "Administrators reserve the right to use their own discretion and apply the above rules with some flexibility." - Does that mean, the Rules can and will be changed without prior Notice? Also, will there be any Form of Notification or Warning when an Account is reaching the State of Inactivity? |

| You're welcome to say you're fully against it, but as this is a request thread, I do not want the thread to devolve into a series of arguments on the time lengths or other rules given in the OP. 1. If someone hacked the account to get a username, they'd simply change the username of the account. 2. The line is up to administrator discretion. I'm not going to say 5 list entries, and then someone requests a username that has 6. 3. That means that the admins on MAL are in the possession of common sense and will use it to ensure that inactive accounts are not renamed when there is some confidence the user will be returning. Noboru, I've been an admin on MAL for a long time. Most people who don't log in after 5 years can't even remember their usernames. They either create new accounts or come onto IRC asking for help because they can't remember their username. Before the username request feature existed, I used to have to help people find out why their email was registered on the site - because they created an account years ago and completely forgot about it. Please have some faith in me to do my job properly. |
