Science Proves: Pop Music Has Actually Gotten Worse

Science confirms what you've always suspected: music these days is worse than it used to be.

So, what happened since 1955? Well, timbral variety went down. That means that songs are becoming more and more homogeneous. In other words, all pop music sounds the same now.

The study also found that pitch content has decreased – which means that the number of chords and different melodies has gone down. “Musicians today seem to be less adventurous in moving from one chord or note to another, instead following the paths well-trod by their predecessors and contemporaries,” Scientific American explains.

And the next time an old person complains that your music is too loud, well, it probably is. Music has gotten a lot louder in the past half-century

So what this study is saying is that your parents are right, music just isn’t what it used to be.

Nana Mizuki released her first album in 2001. We've been in a golden age of pop music since then.

You mean a golden age of voice acting.

We're in a Jpop decline, the newer talent just doesn't have as many unique singing voices unlike the 2000's and before. It's also not helping that there's a lack of worldwide focus, sales are declining, and K-pop may take over Japan in 3-5 years.

I doubt the study actually says that "pop music has gone worse based on these findings". If it has, it is what we would call "bad science". Why? Well was it proven, as a fact, that music was "better" with a wider range in pitch and more variety in melody? No. Since that is subjective, it still says very little about "better" or "worse". Now, it has objectively proven (I'm assuming, didn't read the link) that their is less variety . . . However that doesn't equate to worse. Do bear in mind that you can't objectively prove something that is based upon a subjective scale.

Am I the only one who sees the irony because this is pop science?

The loudness war is horrible though. It appears in almost all music these days. Not that i dont like loud music but it loses varience when its all compressed.

That's too bad..it's always nice to experiment with music. I guess most artists are choosing the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" approach.

In other news, the sky is blue. Hah, joking. But I'm not surprised, not when there's pretty much confirmation by many people in the music industry that there's no room for improvisation in the big labels nowadays. Artistes are forced to follow what the executives believe is what the audience wants to hear and the lives of the artistes themselves are nothing but endless promos from one place to another. It can be quite stressful.

That's why those shows like X-Factor or The Voice are not always a one-way ticket to a good life. Even on the show itself, it can be quite a nightmare.

Its pop music not all music. By pop they just mean whatever the masses choose to listen to and spoon fed through media.

That is so true! You can hear a lot of music on the WWW nowadays from streaming radio stations, and can hear music from the 60's to the 80's, which is much better than the garbage we have today. I really never did think much of Katy Perry or Justin Bieber, I'd rather listen to groups like ABBA, or the B52's or Duran Duran, or new wave music, or even disco music and classic rock. Hell, even swing music is better.
J-POP, on the otherhand, is still good enough, as well as a lot of anime theme songs and music. Modern US or Western music just sucks too much!

Science didn't even need to prove it. Why waste the funds on something useless?
No way to recall
What it was that you had said to me
Like I care at all
But it was so loud
And you sure could yell
You took a stand on every little thing
And it was so loud

Variation in timbre and tone has nothing to do with quality. This is a biased study.

Didn't know scientists were this stupid.

Haha most metal is just sound trying to compensate for poor quality.

Interesting survey but I guess it was to be expected, variety gets harder as the simpler tunes are used up.

All music is sound.

Congratulations on that deduction, I was referring to the volume metal has in order to compensate for its lack of structure and subtlety.

Also music has structure too. That's where the sound comes in.

I could write the 'best' piece of music in the world by the standards set by the article's representation of the study, but nobody would enjoy it, and so I think it would actually suck.

Damn, anybody miss the good 'ol days when music was propaganda encouraging men to be sent off to their painful, isolated deaths?

What ever happened to american family values??

I love Christine

"If one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours. He will put some things behind, will pass an invisible boundary; In proportion as he simplifies his life, the laws of the universe will appear less complex, and solitude will not be solitude, nor poverty poverty, nor weakness weakness." - Henry David Thoreau
