1. Do you prefer driving automatic or manual transmission?
2. Why do you like driving in your preferred transmission?
3. Is there something you dislike about it?
4. What is the transmission of your current car (if you have one)?

I prefer driving manual. There's nothing better than having complete control of your car, gears included. Engine braking is much easier in a manual since automatics typically come with a smaller amount of gears and it's not always the case where you'll be able to select the gear you want. I still find it difficult to work with semi-automatic transmissions, which allow you to set the gear, but it feels really unnatural for some reason.

Manual is a lot more engaging to drive, but I think because of that, driving one requires more attention than an automatic. In situations with very dense traffic, I really dislike that, since I end up clutch driving maybe to move an inch or two. Driving on hills also sucks. I've been driving for a while and sometimes I wish I could just press the gas pedal and go instead of the convoluted technique with manual.

Either way, I wouldn't trade my manual for an automatic. My next cars will definitely have a manual transmission.

There are only two types of transmissions in cars: automatic and manual. Descriptions in spoiler below:

All the cars that I've ever driven have been manual, so I have no idea what driving an automatic would feel like. It sounds kind of freaky, though. I mean, it sounds easier and more convenient, but I like having the extra control.

I'm so used to manual that I can't see myself ever wanting to change to automatic.

Maybe in other countries where manual is dominant, driving automatic would be strange. But in the U.S., driving a manual is kinda sacrilege, and only the car guys know how to do it. I know over 90% of cars bought in the U.S. today have some form of automatic. CVT, semi-auto, the traditional automatics included, there are even models where the only transmission you can buy is automatic. Ford Taurus is guilty of that, so are the most recent generations of Toyota Camry. I doubt you can buy a crossover/SUV/minivan in the U.S. with a manual. Also, rental car companies will only carry automatic.

Hell, in the U.S., driving a manual is synonymous with "theft deterrent." Some of the car thieves don't even know how to drive manual.

Most people posting seem to vote up on manual anyways, but I'm just curious where they're from-- seems like they're not located in the U.S.

OT: Driving an automatic is basically putting your car in one gear and going. After that, all you have to do is hit the gas to accelerate and brake to stop. You don't switch gears by yourself-- car does it for you.

That's actually what I miss about my Corolla (ended up giving that to my brother). Traffic was easier because you didn't have to think about how to move your car forward. Hills are also frustrating and it doesn't help that I live in a city that's basically a giant hill surrounded by other smaller hills. Otherwise, that takes up about 25% of the time. A large chunk of my commute, but I live for the other 75% that was made better thanks to the manual.

I think it's just muscle memory, but to each their own.

I agree, it's a better choice for sports cars but I got a manual since I do a lot of long-distance driving and it gets boring. Better to be annoyed in heavy traffic than asleep. :P

1. Do you prefer driving automatic or manual transmission?
I prefer manual
2. Why do you like driving in your preferred transmission?
It's way better when you go into "rally mode". It gives you more control than automatic and I'm pretty sure manual gearboxes are more durable(and cheaper to replace generally)
3. Is there something you dislike about it?
When driving long distances with cruise control, it's annoying 'cus you have to change gears yourself. In that regard automatic is better.
4. What is the transmission of your current car (if you have one)?
Currently I have automatic, but only 'cus I got the car cheap from my cousin

I actually don't know how to drive a manual transmission, general principles aside. Just never knew anyone who had one who would teach me. One day I'll learn.

Maybe I just need to bribe RedArmyShogun to come over to visit and teach me to drive like a real god of death... :)

But as to the perks of an automatic transmission, you can't drive and shoot at the same time with a manual.

What exactly is difficult about driving a stick shift?

It just means sliding a stick into place every now and then, and paying attention to how much you rev the engine. Once you learn how to do this without stalling the car then it is a cake walk.

I've never driven an automatic car before, but I'd imagine driving without the gear stick would make me feel like I'm not fully in control of the car. Not feeling the car's reactions to revving the engine would feel strange.

Where I'm from, it's slightly frowned upon to drive automatic. They even separate automatic and manual driver licenses. If you take your license with automatic, you get an A imprinted on your license, meaning you're only allowed to drive automatic. Though if you take your license with manual, you can drive both.

I have an old car and I live in the central/northern parts of Norway (it gets pretty cold during the winter), so having manual is more practical for me. It's easier to drive on slippery roads, because of the engine breaking and if the freezing temperatures kills my battery, I can still get it to run. Not sure what it's called in English, in Norwegian we call it "Trille start/Trillstart" (Basically you push the car down a hill or on a flat surface to get the car going) and this afaik doesn't work with automatic.

You also don't have to use the handbrake when you park the car, you can just put in 1st gear and avoid the risk of your handbrake freezing and getting stuck during the winter.

So for me, automatic isn't even a question. Most people also prefer gasoline cars here afaik, because they're apparently much better in the cold/freezing temperatures.

In heavy traffic, automatic is an absolute bliss. But, there's this very peculiar 'crunch' to manual that makes driving manual feel like you're in heaven. I guess, I prefer manual but that's probably because I've been driving an auto for 3 years now.

MT gives more precision but the learning curve is a bit higher than AT.

I like the feel of the stick-shift though. But if you merely use a car for basic transport like house to office and aren't really planning to traverse varied terrain like long interstate journeys and stuff, AT is easier so get that.

As you know, It's a lost art here in the states. When I worked at a detail shop and lube shop, I was one of the "manual guys". Basically, few of the techs could drive stick, so they always kept one of us on hand in case one showed up.

I learned the basics, then developed bad habits at first. My first 5 speed, I burned out TWO clutches. Yes, TWO. I was riding them apparently. I also sucked at downshifts and hill starts, so It became not-so-fun. After driving Auto for 2 years, I got another stick and re-taught myself to drive correctly. I learned downshifts, rev-matching, a little bit of heel-toe...now I'd hate to go back to boring auto slush boxes. I would like to mention that owning a manual car in Atlanta rush hour is a terrible idea. Found that out the hard way. I still love meh stick~

For Americans (not sure where you're from), we're a heavy commuter society so we spend a good portion of our day driving. Actually, if you want to get anywhere here, your only choice is to drive or get a ride from someone who has a car. Very little else. That's why we drive automatic, because it's so convenient, but I see other countries that also commute by car and it leads me to believe my next theory:

The U.S. is heavy with SUVs, crossovers, and trucks, none of those which really make sense equipped with a manual in the first place. Around the same time that the Ford Explorer, Expedition became popular and best-selling cars (effectively brainwashing an entire generation to desire automatics), that was I think when manuals started disappearing, and that was apparent through the rest of Ford's line-up. You could get those cars in manual, but I imagine they're extremely-unpopular choices.

So that's my theory. I somewhat blame the '90s for it here in America, but I don't have any evidence supporting that. :P

That's just sad. I think if you work for any company where you're required to drive a car, you need to know how to drive manual. But I suppose there's a reflection of just how much more frequent automatic is. I didn't think it was THAT bad though.

Olveparty said:

OUCH! I was aware they did it in some countries but I didn't think it was really a thing. And that's another thing that automatics don't really offer, nor does an automatic driver really understand: control, and a lot more of it. I actually tried explaining that to someone I knew in my speech class who was contemplating his first car, he bought a 2015 Corolla with a CVT. I realized he didn't know cars when he couldn't explain to me how exactly the transmission worked (switching to the lower ratio doesn't mean it goes into "manual" mode).

And that brings me to when I actually explained it to him, since he asked me what the appeal of a manual transmission is. And I told him, it's greater control over your engine's power, and it seems that the general assumption for manual is that you shift your own gears. "But can't you do that in an automatic too?" Yeah.....it's really not the same. Not when it comes to engine braking and cheaper repairs and such. Eventually he began thinking manual was more difficult and backed off, said that he loved automatic because it allowed him to text while driving. Which means I'm not qualified to convince anyone to switch over and we should assign an ambassador for it just in case. :P

If you enjoy feeling more engaged while you are driving, or enjoy the act of driving then I'd recommend manual transmission.

If not then go with automatic, if you just want to get where you're going and that's it, then automatic will be less frustrating.
