Andreas M. (57), from Freital, Germany, raises his arm to a nazi salute in provocation toward a group of demonstrators for human and refugees rights, who were marching nearby.

He gets then calmly approached from behind by a police officer, who gently lower his arms and informs him that he's under arrest for "use of gestures attributable to unconstitutional organizations".

If charged, he faces 3 years in jail.

gestures attributable to unconstitutional organizations?

I know it's Germany, but it's a bit harsh, it's just disturbing the peace and you only get a night in jail for that maybe with a fine at worst or just the fine itself in most cases. I also see booze, there's a good chance he was drunk and that picture is all that's needed for a drunk defense.

Fun Fact: Multiculturalism is a tool to creating more intolerance, especially in Europe due to lack of integration into European society.

In America, everyone integrates into American culture, so Caim is spot on right here.

What? Most minorities in Europe come from former colonies so the immigrants share cultural values etc and integrate faster.

I mean, at least we didn't have a race of people rioting across the entire country recently

Most people who have committed treason in the name of ISIS in the US weren't Middle Eastern or came from there. Racism is even more of an issue in the EU (and it's more complex, you're talking about lack of oversight all over the place and focus on just the immigrants over natives vs a few bad apples in the police force) due to immigrants not integrating into European society (and giving people no go zones is racism).

Most minorities do originally come from the commonwealth eg. Pakistan, India, Hong Kong , Caribbean etc

They share cultural values such as language thanks to colonialism so they integrate faster.

I don't know why you think it's false

Germany prefers condemning its historic failures, instead of tolerating them. It's praiseworthy. Unfortunately I can't say the same for my own country (Croatia), there has been too much of a laid back attitude towards our own brand of WW2 fascists lately.

I would say more in the case of them and Eastern Europe, it goes well past being laid back so much as "lol rewrite history"

I can remember when a man in Quebec was jailed in Germany for this salute outside of the Reichstag. He was only jailed for a day though then given a fine. 3 years may be the 'maximum' punishment, but it's not as if that's what he actually got and nor is he likely to receive such.

I do disagree with this law but, I don't feel sorry for him. As a German citizen he would be well aware it's illegal and he's not making some protest for freedom of speech, but instead is merely trying to be an asshole, towards people protesting. This is something that depending on the rally, can actually get you arrested in the US as well. For example, bringing a hangman's noose to a civil rights rally can and has gotten people arrested.

Yeah, but it's better now than it was during the 90's. That decade was complete bullshit, as you say, "lol rewrite history".

I remember the "history" book from my grade school had about 20 pages or less about WW2 in ex-Yugoslavia, with the majority of those pages dedicated to denigrating the partisan movement and Tito, and talking about postwar communist crimes. The government and conduct of the Ustase movement was covered in about a page or two, with some ridiculously low number cited as victims killed in concentration camps, and the rest of those two pages talking about how the movement enhanced the cultural scene of Zagreb, or some shit like that. It was pathetic.

I was lucky to be raised by former partisan grandparents, who knew a bit more of what was actually going on, and also lucky to be living in the least nationalistic part of Croatia (around Rijeka). I shudder to think what sort of person I would've been if I grew up further south, around Zadar or Dubrovnik in a family with different values.

Thanks, but I doubt they would call themselves "heroes". They were normal people in a time when such were harder to find.

The problem in this country since the falling apart of Yugoslavia has been similar to Japan's apologetic view of their WW2 government, and very different from the stance in modern day Germany. That's why this sort of law mentioned in the OP, even tho harsh, is very useful as an official way of condemning far right fundamentalism properly and wholly, something I only wish was enacted here. Also, let's face it, actual max sentences are only carried out on people that are repeat offenders and probably certified members of the neo-Nazi movement.

Germany very much understands and studies its history. It does not embrace it, which is a very good thing, something Japan, Korea and China should learn from.
