yes, just yesterday i was on a four-hour long bus ride and a girl sat next to me who was watching Mushishi and Tsuritama on her phone.
it was weird... but at least she had a good taste.

I saw a girl in Attack on Titan cosplay in the mall a few years ago.
She even had the full 3D Maneuver Gear setup...

As far as I know, there wasn't any kind of convention going on in the area at that time, either... and all of her friends were dressed in regular clothes.
I guess she just felt like it was a cosplay kind of day. XD

I tried, but seriously people like that annoy me. You shouldn't be proud of being an obsessive neckbeard who watches cartoons all the times.

If people wearing anime tshirts are otakus, then I'm one of them.

I've spoken to only a few people who read manga/watch anime, but out of those 10, 5 were freakishly obsessed with these things.

One actually had pictures of anime/Japanese people on her Facebook timeline.ALL THE TIME.
The other had a collection of anime plushies that she slept with. She was 16 when I last talked to her.

It was awkward. But yes, I've met otakus in real life.

I refuse to use a derogatory term to talk about anyone who watches anime.

Sorry, I just wanted to use that phrase at least once today. :'( You just happened to be the target this time.

I don't want to name the people that are my friends 'Otaku', which the OP seemed to be asking. My friends aren't afraid to admit it, but it's not like they go out of their way to spread it. >.>

I already mentioned that I used the term "otakus" (I use quotation marks for a reason) just to shorten the thread title. Okay sure, I probably should have just said anime fan or sumthin', since using the word "otaku" out of context seems to have gotten a lot of you people's knickers in a bundle.

Why so sensitive? Are you perhaps otakus yourself? :o (the traditional otaku)
Seriously though, this is like someone getting pissed because they call a snake poisonous rather than venomous. Calling it poisonous technically isn't incorrect, since venom is still a kind of poison.

Edit:

This thread was just meant to be a discussion on whether or not anyone has seen people in public that excessively display their interest in anime/manga. This wasn't meant to be about people's friends, and I didn't mean any offence by using "otaku". I guess that word is either the bane of mankind, or something someone proudly pro-claims themselves as, depending on the person.

But I don't like the use of derogatory terms by anyone except for the person themselves~

then there was also this angry 8 year old who was wearing that Attack on Titan hoodie with the wings on the back. That was pretty recent.

Well, I'll admit I probably shoulda just used "anime fan" instead, I'll change the thread title to reflect that. When I made this, I was just thinking more along the lines of someone who's more a "massive" anime fan (e.g. cosplaying in public), so otaku came to mind more than just your average fan of animu.

I'm sure some of these fans would actually feel complimented if you called them an otaku, as I said, it just depends on the person: Massive insult to some, awesome compliment to others.

^this

I do try to have a "normal" social life but it seems like a lot of anime fans don't care about that which is disheartening to say the least and I can sadly see where a lot of stereotyping comes from

Now that I think about it tt isn't that extreme since I know a lot of people I am perfectly fine hanging out with (and I think most normal people would), its kind of 50/50 on the notcringey/cringey scale, but the negative examples just stick with you a lot more (as with most things)

Yes. I've introduced anime to on of my ex-friend. Suddenly she was like - I will learn japanese, I love japanese food, I will make cosplay, I love anime... after that I sweared that I'll never do that again. She is still into it so much. I feel guilty somehow.
