I really hate it, but it works so well for the story, i mean, seriously, if souma had won i don't know if i would be happy, its like in one piece if ace had survived... its not a happy situation, but necessary IMO.

LOL PEOPLE ARE DROPPING THE MANGA BECAUSE OF THIS, SO PATHETIC HAHAHAHAHA

Souma lost because his dishes are his father's specialties, not Souma's.
Up to this point, most of Souma's dishes have lineages based on what he cooked in his father's kitchen, experimentation and direction.
With this loss, he inches away from his fathers style and becomes distinctive for his own.
It's one of the reasons why his father encouraged him to go to the school, to find deeper meaning in his cooking.

I'm actually a bit glad Souma finally lost, even though I can't help thinking it took way too many chapters for that to happen.
The next chapters should be interesting to read, and I'm especially curious to find out how this will help developing his character.

Im fine with this loss, i expected it, the way author set up the chapters and how the others and souma presented their dishes, I just hope author wont speed multiple weeks dwelling on this lost, and he quickly redeems himself

problem im worried about is that now, everyone will be like "pssh he couldnt even win after bragging, i guess he was nothing special after all" and that crap, and look down on him. All i want is for Erina/Alice to acknowledge him :P but i guess thats not possible for miss tsundere

"LOL PEOPLE ARE DROPPING THE MANGA BECAUSE OF THIS, SO PATHETIC HAHAHAHAHA" Jesus, i mean, seriously? They can't handle the defeat? It's so normal in shounen manga, MC loses and gets better. Actually the plot is better because of it... it's just awful, people who stops reading this because of this arc.

I agree with this the most, I'm kinda happy too that he lost, especially with the way his eyes looked near the end of the chapter. Those are the eyes of someone who is ready to evolve and not sulk like anybody else

People gonna start sleeping on Souma though....

I Quite Liked it sort of "Was tired of the idiots thinking" Going Last meant Win
Even though it had been Disproved
What I Hated Was that He lost to The Fruit Loops Mascot "Tropical Person Following his Nose to Glory"

And then the Reasoning for the Loss "Hayama & Kurokiba" had all the flashbacks this arc, so certainly one was going to win ---would've preferred Kurokiba won "Especially after that flashback" have Hayama in tears in the BG, woulda been GLORIOUS

^ but this sudden Ehm Well what we call a specialty and the chef which displayed his uniqueness best in his dish/ The Dish that only That Chef could Make.....Erm Isn't that Nakiri Alice...cough...cough "LOL"
She shoulda just came out and took the Win ---She Had Space Age Looking Dishes
How long will it last

They should have named the winner first then showed the flashback. It was obvious when they showed Hayama flashback that he was going to win.

That's what I thought too, but it would have been cool if they just plot twisted it too.

Kind of expected Souma to lose. I mean, just losing against really high-class people with tons of experience like his dad isn't much of an impact, but when you lose to someone that's your caliber, it hurts more.

I feel like it's going to lead to a training session or go right into another major event. Leaning towards the major event a bit more though.

Very disappointing. I don't hide the fact that I'm not very happy at how this arc ended. I can understand his reasons for not winning, but it just doesn't compensate for spending over half the manga(the past 50 chapters) to set up a loss. Even if the loss is to further his future.

I think that, if anything, this loss will push Souma closer to Erina as a point to focus on...since he's now going to be moving away from his fathers style of dishes in some form or another. We've known since the start of the series that Souma's biggest failing has been that he really has no goal...beating his father is not a goal that will last his entire life and he needs to start maturing and thinking about things he wants to do for himself. Right now he's not cooking for anything, other than himself I guess, so he doesn't compare well against a lot of his peers on the motivation front to be honest.

And with that, the tournament arc comes to an end. I knew Soma wouldn't win, but I couldn't figure out who would win between Hayama and Kurokiba. Soma had to lose this tournament, there is no logical reason, in my mind, why he should have won. If Kurokiba wins he would be above Alice, and if Soma wins he would have progressed too much without development. So Hayama winning is the natural choice in my mind.

I wonder where they are going to go from here? They've been in the tournament arc for over 50 chapters!

I'm not upset about him losing, though it was not like he necessarily needed to lose here, there are a lot more formidable opponents waiting for him. It's the fact that he lost to the biggest bull shit character in the series, would've preferred then if he lost to Kurokiba. Not going to overreact and say dropping it, but this does leave a foul aftertaste, or should I say smell.

cyclone1993 said:

One could argue that Kurokiba already did, being in the final alone is already a better accomplishment than her, so winning it wouldn't have changed that.

And yeah, get the latter part, but his father is a top elite that was #2 of his year, so even though he has just an ordinary restaurant, competing / learning against/from him is a far better education than most of them have/had. It shouldn't have been that strange for him to win against them.

I think the problem right now is that this was kind of the chance the author had to make Erina more relevant since Souma would be a part of the elite 10 and HAVE to interact with her, it's been the biggest issue with her character really - how absent she is most of the time because there's literally no reason that she would be in the same place as Souma.

As for where the story will go now...that's a good question to be honest. I guess it'll start to shift to Souma trying to distance himself from his father somehow? But I can't imagine how that would happen and what effect it will actually have on Souma.

I was in a bit of a fit after reading this chapter, but actually sitting it out and thinking about it, I'm glad the author decided to give the victory to Hayama. Not that Souma deserved to lose, but it was his for his own benefit.
I do believe what Souma lacked was that he didn't necessarily have his own "style" and he didn't pour his heart out to somebody that he wanted to exceptionally cook for, after all, that's what his father said.
Hopefully we get to see Souma truly evolve and later on take top seat somehow >.>

Gotta agree with this one. Soma losing is good for his character, That was my main problem with Soma his a cool MC but the fact remains that he's just a poor copy of his dad.His skills and knowledge about cooking came from his Old man, so with this loss he'll hopefully realize that following his father's footsteps (subconsciously) won't make him a better cook cause the only thing he'll end up seeing is the persons back.

He needs to find his own path, his own set of wings.

After showing that flashback, they couldn't have made it more obvious that Hayama won. They should have announced it back before showing the flashback.

I would have wanted Souma to win since he did lose to the curry point battle to Hayama. Oh well. Hopefully Souma and Kurokiba gets something from the final... like some advantages in the school and stuff.
