Who knows, maybe there will be settlements in 2050 on mars
I've been here way too long...

Elon Musk, the founder of SpaceX, announced last month that he plans on sending humans to Mars within 12 years, as long as he gets the necessary funding, which can be got from winning NASA's commercial crew contract. Or if they lose the contract, they could go public to secure the funds. I don't think that there will be settlements in multiple planets in this lifetime because the focus will be on first and foremost creating a self-sustaining city on Mars, which is already quite an ambitious goal. Nevertheless, I'm looking forward to it.

Maybe a military base on the moon or something...if there isn't one already there.

Maybe like a moonbase or some petty colonies, but I doubt we'll get to see awesome terraforming action and shit during our lifetime. : <

I think so, haven't you heard about the 'experiment' where the send people up to Mars and they have to live there and can never come back, whilst they're gonna build trees etc on Mars.

It hasn't started yet, but there's alot of talking about it.

Yeah there's a space program called Mars One to start a colony on Mars starting in 2024. To be honest it sounds kinda dodgy but hopefully things work out.

I think there will probably be some sort of AI Base on Mars or something, but I don't think any actual humans will be on other planets. I'm guessing it will be in the late 2070s.

The world ends in 2085 because that's when the Sega Dreamcast's internal clock will reach its limit.

I wonder what the current crowd will think of a 70 year old listening to 1960s music in the 2070s...while watching my Augmented reality Smart air digital media station International Mars news AI base channel.

A few facilities on the moon maybe, but I doubt much more will be achieved in my lifetime. Having just watched Planetes, it kinda makes me sad to know I'll never be in space.

It's never going to happen. At least not self-sufficient colonies.

The problem is a problem of compatible biomass or organic material or whatever you want to call it. The only stuff we've got is here on Earth. To make a colony self sufficient you have to cart enough biomass there with you to grow your food, filter your exhalations, break down your waste, etc.

It's just too expensive. Unless we find other planets with biospheres, and not just any biosphere, they have to be compatible with life as we know it. But unless that happens, we're ultimately stuck here.

And there are no other planets with biospheres.

Water is a nice start, but it's only part of the required infrastructure for life.

Not a chance, nations are not interested in space anymore, we got rid of the shuttle all together and basically nobody gives a fuck about space exploration. How many people actually even take an interest compared to say the publics interest in celebrities.

Maybe if the Nazi's had won we would have a moon base or something by now but as it stands we will be doing less and less with space in the near future. At this rate we won't see bases on other planets for another 200 years or so. If we got our collective fingers out we could have a base in 40 years.

The international space station is one of mankind's current greatest accomplishments yet everyone is far more interested in which celeb is cheating on who. Humans are wasting all their potential on literally nothing. Look how much technology advances during war time when we all have to actually try to improve. Thats why we need some kind of war with aliens or something, get humans to stop been so lazy and do something.

In my lifetime? no way. Not only we lack the means to terraform whatever planet we want to go, I doubt there is enough money invested on the project to make it happen so fast.
Maybe in a couple of centuries.

I doubt it because our technology isn't advancing at a fast enough rate to give us the ability to live on other planets. I think it will take at least another 100 years before we can actually colonize other planets--let alone other solar systems.

I think its more likely for humans to experience a massive setback in progress and collapse in the next century rather than to achieve anything as great as colonization of an extraterrestrial body.

At the rate humans are depleting resources of and poisoning the earth you'd think finding a new home would be pretty high on the agenda.

highly unlikely, or possibly never even after the human species go extinct. in our solar system, the only planet that is the same size as the earth is venus. however venus is an active planet but it is not a place for any living beings to live on. even technology cannot survive in that planet. next place is mars. mars is a dead planet. there is no atmosphere due to there not being any magnetic field being generated.

to find a planet that is suitable for life we would have to travel light years away and that technology will probably not come by for well over a few centuries. to find a planet suitable for life we will have to first find a planet that orbits in its respective star's habitable zone. we also need to find one that has a stable orbit and a rightfully fit sized as a terrestrial planet. we also need to make sure if it has plate tectonics and a large moon for tidal forces. and many other requirements which makes a planet suitable for life

tl;dr, venus and mars are no-no for living. good earth-like planets with similar conditions are light years away and our technology ain't there yet for probably a few hundred years

Mars can be made habitable in fact there are plans to inhabit it in around 12 years.

12 years is such a short time. terraforming mars would take centuries if not thousands of years to accomplish. i fail to see how a dead planet can be habitable within 12 years and their is no guarantee that it will be a successful project

Unlikely, especially with the current economic situation and the recent budget reductions with projects involving space exploration (NASA). The Apollo Mission in the 1960's and 1970's might remain our greatest accomplishment in regards to men visiting other worlds. There will definitely be pushes towards it, however, it'll probably never become a reality.

That was just a company stunt to get money from space-junkies. There's no way Mars will have facilities able to sustain life in 12 years. Hell how many people have been sent to mars to date? 0. If they can't even get there, how are they going to live there?

I am actually glad that it is that way. We should invest in developing future technology instead of pumping money in projects that are based on present technology and have nothing but symbolic value.
To move forward, we have to push the development of technology. Not useless projects that ultimately achieve nothing other than the USA saying: "lololol we were first, suck it China!"

Maybe. I can't predict the future. But the other planets of the Solar System are not very human-friendly when it comes to temperature and atmosphere.

But we did go on the Moon. I can't believe some people can't accept that fact even today.

Future technology is developed through innovation, and space exploration helps promote a culture of scientific innovation. I don't see how exploring the forefronts of space is a "useless project", if anything it is fundamental to understanding our place in the universe and what goes on in it. NASA's budget is negligible compared to the amount spent on military.

The only feasible planet for colonisation/settlement (save Earth) is Mars. Any others in the solar system have too extreme conditions for it to be realistically possible. Whilst science fiction has galactic spacetravel in minutes, unless we find a way to break the universal constant that is the speed of light then we can't really make it to other star systems.
Communication will be nigh on impossible between any other planet and Earth anyway so it's all very complicated. Any settlers to Mars or any other planet would be permanent due to the astronomical *hehe* cost of returning them.
The world’s not perfect, but it’s there for us trying the best it can. That’s what makes it so damn beautiful.
