Ok so, currently I am in second semester university, and I've smoked since grade 10 (4 years), I started because I was undergoing mental breakdowns, extreme depression, emotional issues and a lot of problems with my life, I just wanted to find a way to relax from it all, my mind was always thinking about complicated matters. The first time I did it I hated it, I kept on coughing and the more I did it the more I got used to it. I could feel myself being somewhat relaxed. But the one thing that bothers me the most about it is the disgusting taste, I could never get used to it. All my friends where doing it and I wanted to be part of the (in-group) also so i kept forcing myself to do it. The most that I probably could only handle is like one pack (20 cigarettes) a month. I carried the habit all the way with me to college but after all my 'former friends' dropped out I smoking on my own one day and I thought "Why the hell do I still do this?" I live in a dorm far from my house problems, all my old friends where gone, I have more new mature friends. And I dropped it, it's been 3 months now and I never touched a cigarette since, nor did I ever had the urge to. So my question is; How do people get addicted to smoking?, I've done it for 4 years of my life, hated it and just dropped the ball like it was nothing.

Usually the question shouldn't be why do people smoke, as it's fairly obvious:addiction. The question we should ask is "How did they start in the first place"?

Rebellion? Curiosity? Either way, it all ends the same way.

Same reason as you or anyone who actually wants to turn to cigs: a clutch form of relief. Anytime I ever considered trying them, it was for that reason, and people keep coming back to that it for that in addition to being physically addicted to it.

Though now anime is my cigarette and it's a hella lot more addictive than actual cigarettes.

If you were able to drop it that easily, it just means you had something to fill that void. Others may not, or may have been smoking for longer so it may have been harder.

I smoked ciggies for half a year during my freshmen year in college. I just went cold turkey without any adverse withdrawal symptoms. I don't really understand the addiction to nicotine either. Maybe I'm just immune to it o_o.

Not sure why I started, but it was probably because I was emotionally stressed at the time. It's an expensive habit for a broke student ._.

Actually pot probably provided me with more relief than ciggies did.

Thanks for reading my entire post <3, and yes it is quiet probable that i might have already filled the hole in my heart but I'm still not quiet sure of how aha, maybe its cause I don't have to experience my emotional problems any more (much)

I've only ever smoked socially. And as such I've never really been addicted.

...I guess I'm not a very addictive person. But seriously, I've never craved a cigarette once outside of the occasional party.

I was in the exact same situation before I entered university and moved to a hall of residence. That's ridiculous the amount of people that can get you basically anything there lol

Stress relief, i heard it is the best with coffee. Apparently once you take one, there's no going back.

Or they want cancer.

It does look cool though, eg. Kurosaki from Dengeki Daisy

You probably weren't addicted if you could go cold turkey with no withdrawal symptoms. Sorry man, but no one is immune to nicotine. You're not as special as you think <3

My point wasn't trying to 1-up.

He posted a picture of a cool guy smoking a cigarette to show that it is cool. You tried to respond by showing that it is not cool by showing a child smoking. So I responded by showing you another cool guy smoking a cigar.

So you think half a year of smoking fairly regularly is not enough to get me addicted? I was running through at least 2 packs a week. I don't think I'm special at all lol. Maybe I was smoking it incorrectly >_>

that is definitely a possibility. I've smoked with people who have inhaled incorrectly and that could be the case.
