I would say Haibane Renmei and La Maison en Petits Cubes (this is only 10 minutes long), and possibly Princess Tutu as well.

It may not make you cry, but I found White Clouds to be an intensely emotional one-shot, but I'm also very sentimental.

With fewer than twenty pages, it's worth a look anyway, I think.

Watch the Clannad(Movie) instead, a much better bittersweet ending then the actual series.

Going to say 5 Centimeters per second, odds are you won't cry in it, but this does have one of the more realistic tones of an anime out there with a very realistic ending.

Nana one of the most realistic series i have seen to this date. It has many "sad" moments strung throughout the show and it will get to you.

Edit

Going to throw in the manga Bitter Virgin in there as well, by far one of the saddest story's i have read and it is the one thing that has actually made me tear up as i was reading it.

I'll second NANA - awesome series. 5 Centimeters per Second is also sentimental but I personally didn't find myself moved by it. However, I know plenty of people who were, so I'd say give it a try. If anything, it's pretty to look at.

I'll also add Millennium Actress, a romantic drama film by Satoshi Kon. Very moving, very human, and presented in a unique (though, confusing if you're not used to Kon's style) way.

I'll also say that Dennou Coil had me crying at the end, but it's really only the second half of the series where it starts getting emotional and all that. The first half is seemingly filled with "fluff" (even though it all pulls together for the second half), so it's not particularly tear-jerking.

God..... prepare to cry you heart out with the best romance/drama... ever:

1. Ef a tale of memories and it's sequel Ef a tale of melodies (the sequel is the heartbreaking one! This is the best anime ever. A must see!!!)
2. Clannad and it's sequel Clannad After story (don't take my word for it, ask all of the guys who already recommended)
3. Bokura ga ita (one of my favorites!)
4. True Tears (the story about tears... what else could you ask for :P)
5. Basilisk (an epic story about unattained love, not only romance but also adventure, historical, samurai... the end will make you cry for sure)
6. since you've already seen Kanon, then that leaves AIR! (after clannad, cuz these three series should be viewed no matter what. They're simply great, and can make you cry)
7. Boku wa imouto ni koi wo suru (a story about forbidden love between twins, bitter-sweet story which you may appreciate if you're not full of prejudice and understand true love)

All of these are romances and other genres, but they are stories that will stir up your emotions and won't leave you unmoved.... all of them left great impressions on me, and i hope they will on you.

Hope you will consider these recommendations, cuz i guarantee they are the best of the best :)

Seconding 5cmps, Haibane, Millennium Actress and Basilisk.

And obviously Legend of the Galactic Heroes. It doesn't pack lots of melodrama or emotional tricks to make you cry like so many other series does, but it does have some incredibly well written tragic happenings, more and more of them as the series progress, and the lenght only serve to make you even more acquainted with the characters, which make these tragedies all the more effective. Definitely the best tearjerking moments I've come across.

I usually don't cry w/ anything romantically sentimental, but familial love, death, and loneliness usually get me.

That said, Grave of the Fireflies is easy, as is Tokyo Godfathers.

Welcome to the NHK is pretty sad towards the end, as is Dennou Coil but they're not tear jerkers throughout.

If shoujo is your thing, you can always try Full Moon wo Sagashite and Fushigi Yuugi.

Millennium Actress actually seems kind of cheery to me.

Also, I'm going to say Toki wo Kakeru Shoujo as well.
All are amazing and are sure to make you feel some sort of emotion, at the very least, and if you're anything like me (who cries easily) you'll more than likely cry.
Give them a shot, hope you like them :]

I'm not a hater, but I see your point. I'm a sucker for the kind of tearjerking drama that AIR and Kanon put together, but Clannad just didn't quite do it for me. Maybe because
Either way, I cried a lot more over series like Angelic Layer, Haibane Renmei, Kaleido Star, and Fruits Basket than I did over Clannad. Heck, I want to say that even Arc the Lad ranked higher on the Tear-O-Meter for me.

I don't usually watch things extremely heartfelt or shojo, watched a few series that was pretty sad to me.

I'm not sure about you, but Spirited Away made me cry. If you're into yaoi/shounen-ai, then I suggest Junjou Romantica. It's beautiful.

Clannad is a huge tear jerker, but you have to endure 20 mediore episodes before it becomes amazing : /

What I'm really shocked no one has recommended is

Tokyo Magnitude 8.0

I'm a 23 year old guy, and that anime nearly had me busting out tears in front of my roommate. I didn't cry but my eyes got watery as shit. I recommend it, it's an amazing anime in general, and it's only 13 episodes long or so.

Welcome to the NHK is also an amazing slice of life with some good tear-jerkers

Exactly.

How the last episodes played out was what got to me, idgaf what anybody says, they were soul wrenching. The sibling interaction while at times maybe overly dramatic (the sister anyway) and almost contrived, was just. guh.

As mentioned before. Clannad, and the Clannad After Story. What some would call mediocre episodes, I would call the entire reason you'd want to cry so much. I think I bawled out at just about every arc. Even Clannad's ending theme, "Dango Daikazoku" will water your eyes up after you've finished the whole series. Coincidentally, you may also end up laughing your ass off quite a bit.
