Well, looks like most of the atheists here are taking it as being fact. Quite funny, they watch a random uninformed tv show and take it as fact; pretty much the same thing they accuse theists of doing 😄

this was great. I'm so excited. loved studying Medieval philosophy back in university. this series focuses on the 15th century, which is during the Medieval ages and touches in Medieval philosophy that focuses on theology and the rationality and arguments of God's existence.

Copernicus developed the heliocentric model in 1543, and then Galileo was born 1564. Galileo later invents the telescope and an early microscope, so Orb featues a time about a century before these ideas are developed. I think this is a crazy interesting time period to write a story, can't wait to watch the anime and then read the manga later.

the idea that in Medieval times, philosophers figured that the earth and planets all had to be spherical because a sphere is the perfect shape, ie., equal distance from all sides. and God is perfect, therefore the earth, his creation, would be the most perfect. That's part of an ontological argument that always stuck with me, but I think even earlier philosophers figured the earth was a sphere (probs based on the shape of the moon).

Interesting start as a whole, a bit slow but I like shows deep-rooted in philosophy and intellect like this one. The whole tone and premise of this series feels very different to everything else I've seen this year, so hopefully the anime can live up to its potential. The show's got plenty of time to establish itself and with it being 2-cour, assume this is going right till the very end since the manga isn't super long.

Seems really promising.
It's an insignificant detail but Hubert having a poor eyesight but having no problem reading on a small piece of paper at night, without a candle or some kind of torch made me laugh.

@Sun_Chan Not really, this anime has some popular myths, they did not really burn people at stake for researching things.
However inserting it in fictional things makes it more immersive in my opinion, so it's fine.

Looks like another church vs science kind of thing. lol
and the kid loves astronomy which is mostly linked to science nowadays..
so... are they in an adventure to destroy the church and seek their love research of astronomy (science) even more?
This is definitely what I thought when watching this episode.
I don't really like nor dislike astronomy, so I may not like their goals. The church burning people because of some reasons... kind of disheartening to watch. I'm out.
It's not that I dislike this genre but... to add unnecessary fan services to/in/for heroines
and ultimately destroys her character and personality; their purity tarnished because of it,
is the only thing I hope to not happen to them. For that sole purity is my fan service.

It somewhat reminds me of "Berserk", but without monsters and magic. Or brothers Strugatski sci-fi novel "Hard to be a God". It's surely an historical fantasy.

Tsuda-san's voice acting is on the point again. He must have enjoyed giving the voice of a villain who has those creepy lines with ripping nails. Such a suitable voice for a bad guy, the first I heard it I thought Tsuda was definitely having fun.

Chi.: Chikyuu no Undou ni Tsuite Episode 1

I randomly stumbled upon the opening song of this anime in YouTube. It was interesting. I don't have any context about the premise of it. I don't even know it's title. Somehow it reminded me of Vinland Saga. I looked for the title of it, and immediately watched the first two episodes. It was good. It was far different from Vinland Saga, and it has it's own beauty. Can't wait to see where the story goes.

While astronomy, or just science in general was never my favorite subject back in school, somehow, someway, anime finds it way to make me interested in it, with Dr. Stone being one of the big examples of that. But while Dr. Stone tackles basically all science this is just one aspect of science, being astronomy, which was one of the more interesting parts of science icl.

Though, yeah, animation isn't the BEST Madhouse can do, the story just from this episode alone seems to be able to stand on it's own two feet to not have to worry about animation all too much. That entire final scene was really the deciding factor of that for me, of which it about the whole theory that it's actually the earth moving and not the sun.

While yes, we know the answer, it's gonna be one hell of a ride to see these characters find their way to it, and that's the core of this show, heliocentrism.

P.S. easy way to spot an important character is if TsudaKen is voicing them lmao.

Good start to this unique anime that appears to be based on a fictional polish area in the 15th century. While I realize that this is a fictional story it seems like its borrowing from real life events but exaggerating them (kind of like how movies based on real life events do).

Never trust a character voiced by Hayami Show.

I know I wanted to watch this from the time it was announced. The setting and the period it’s based upon always do it for me. Plenty of episodes as well to make sense out of many things, I mean that hypothesis(for them, it’s true btw just that they didn’t know)felt like a life-changing fact check to the guy. Loved that. So yeah, nice start.

Nice animation. Not too fond of the MC's mentality but seems he likely would change some. I like the premise.

For some reason it didnt sink into me till seeing this how people thinking the Earth was centre actually had more rational behind it than to say "godidit" since it would have without more detailed analysis made sense with some limited information and just going off gravity from an earthly perspective.

I've been spending more than enough time watching the worst of MAL's TV entries, think I need a little break from that. May as well start off with this show, a show which not even a half way in establishes that it's a bit unique compared to the ordinary seasonal. Not every day that we see torture techniques off the rip. Thought I'd end up seeing all of Hubert's nails ripped off when he got out.

Rafal really remembers his school facts, considering his trajectory from orphan to university at an early age. A mindset governed by logic, and a career path that would steer clear of the heretic business.. if not for the pursuit of truth. Even Hubert knows he's not being honest with himself. The discussion with Rafael and Hubert later in the ep takes the cake, talking about the universe and how beautiful it is. It's an interesting conversation, ending on the mic drop that probably gets this ball rolling.

It's funny that I could recognize the voice actor for Fate's Tokiomi was in this the second he started talking. I respect that voice.

It's also funny to think there was that thread talking about the show not needing Frieren animation, it really doesn't. It just needs to deliver on the story, and not look like a complete mess. Which I think this show has done with the first ep.

Watched the first episode because there was a lot of hype and praise on ledit about this title.

Have to say I feel quite disapointed, I was expecting something more thorough in terms of cinematography and animation (coming from Madhouse), but it was quite average and even bleak on some parts (the static panning shots in the very first scene and the bubbly almost shoujo background effects when Rafal was acting in a joyful manner), I do have to admit that the backgrounds do look quite detailed though. Kinda felt that the edge was the most important asset of the whole episode, and that's no bueno in my books.

Can't help to feel that whoever was in charge of the cast went for the most derivative choices, Tsuda Kenjiro as a ruthless inquisitor and Hayami Show as a copycat of his hateful priest role from fate series.

I'll go for the 3 episode rule and see if it's something worthy of my time.

Thanks for the detailed explanation @Cersil on all those historical innacuracies. I did raise my eyebrow when I saw Rafal carrying a whole book on his own on the streets and seeing a literate door guardian reading a tablet.

Went into this without reading the description for this anime and just knew it was animated by Madhouse but funny thing for me is that just 4 minutes in when that dude was getting his nails pulled out I randomly guessed the premise of this show bc I had a thought about how back then you’d get killed for saying ANYTHING like for ex. the earth revolves around the sun bc Galileo and other astronomers had a ROUGH time tryna prove that and some got killed for going against the church and its teachings so it’s cool that this is what this series is about I wanna see how it all ends🤩🤩🤩

Very beautiful episode. I connected with the main character b/c sometimes I also look down on others while believing that I am living a superior lifestyle free of human desire and greed. But then I am forced to realize that my lifestyle isn’t completely logical because I just have different kinds of desires than most people. For Rafal it was astronomy. I can’t wait to see where this show is going! (9/10)

I am a sucker for all those astronomy type anime! The night sky is so pretty with the galaxy nebulae showing up. Wish I had a telescope if the colors are that beautiful.

Interesting beginning but I'm already anxious. This feels like the story of Copernicus being persecuted by the church. The old guy is going to get the kid into trouble.

pretty interesting story, but the art style feels lackluster coming from madhouse. It's just so plain on top of the direction and visuals that are pretty average. I'm mainly here for the story anyway.

@SideCharacterKal Orb anime improved the art style a lot when you compare it with its manga. Animation is also above avarage which is more than enough for a dialogue heavy anime.

A little cringe in some dialogue, and I wish it was a bit more historically accurate. However, it's a show that actively shits on religion knowing that it's a danger to science and human knowledge, and it's not an overhyped shounen with nothing of substance other than good animation and characters with fashion style. Those two things are definitely a very personal plus for me so I'll give this a shot

A show about Aristarchus of Samos' correct heliocentric model vs Aristotle's wrong geocentric model, set in late Medieval Poland with a backdrop of people getting burned alive for the mere "sin" of using their heads.
Quite original and fascinating, at least for (history of) astronomy and theology geeks like me 😊
