Pretty interesting.

But I feel kinda bad for Kosame. What will happen to his elderly father and little sister :(

Appare's sister is beautiful though, and I like how she cares for Appare.

Wait, Appare isn’t a woman, his voice sounded very masculine. As we watched in the initial scenes about the race, the character designs are very particular, I’m somehow, always attracted to this kind of draws. Appare’s design is eccentric, his hair, clothes, lipstick. I have no idea how the fuck they crossed the entire Pacific Ocean. But well, we’re now in the United States, I liked the episode, introduced the characters and where we’re now.

I'm enjoying the aesthetics, love the mix of Japanese culture and western culture. I want to see how Kosame and Appare react to American culture. I appreciate Appare's high intellgect but his design reminds me of YuGiOh characters where you don't need to put a lot of effort into spotting the main character. Why does he have face paint on? I'm looking forward to the next episode for sure.

Didn't like the first episode at all.

Judging by its trailers, I was hoping that the show might be some sort of whimsical and entertaining steampunk adventure. Judging by its first episode, it’s a rather heavy-handed and very aggravating muddle intended for foreign consumption. The initial largest weakness is the unpleasantness of its primary characters. Appare Sorano dresses like a kabukimono yet appears to have no appreciation or respect for his native Japanese culture. In fact, he does appear to be exactly as selfish as he’s accused of being because he seems to be highly intelligent yet have no awareness of or consideration for the social and cultural dictum he lives within nor the people he affects. In effect, he’s a raging narcissist who only cares about himself. His appointed tutor and guardian, Kosame Isshiki, is a sniveling mediator type personality who's also pathologically ignorant. He habitually hears only what he wants to hear and ignores anything that he can’t understand. For example, he scolds his sister for doing one thing then scolds her when she does the opposite. The only “right way” is the way he would have done it himself. He insists on climbing onto Appare’s boat and even pushing the throttle after Appare specifically warned him against both actions. And he also complains that Appare isn’t working only because he’s too narrow-minded to recognize that there are other ways to contribute than just performing manual labor. In the first episode all characters are stereotypes. All women are quiet, dignified, and subsuming to men. All men believe themselves supreme within their place in the patriarchal order, except for Appare, who believes himself superior to everyone else and that rules don't apply to him. Moreover, the theme of the show feels almost racist. Despite dressing in an elaborate Japanese kimono over Western overalls, Appare has no respect or regard for Japanese culture, instead worshiping Western culture like it’s a religion. And all other Japanese men in the first episode are depicted as anachronistic relics of a backward provincial culture.

Yeah I kind of agree (no one else thought the black guy was a stereotype?), I'm all for colorful characters and originality but this just seems like an odd mish mash thrown together trying to be "cool". Obviously inspired by by the cartoon from the 60's Wacky Races (inspired by the movie The Great Race) both with over the top characters, I think this would have worked better in a fantasy "steampunk" setting inspired by 19th century America rather than actual 19th century America.

In my eyes, this is P.A Work's love letter to the awesome cartoon that is Wacky Races. For the first episode alone, I'm already loving it. =)

While the starting plot is a little on the weak side, Appare is already an interesting character, with his constant love of calculation and tinkering reminds me a lot of Senku from Dr. Stone. For me, that's a good thing.

The soundtrack from Evan Call so far sounds great, as is the art style and visual quality. The CGI, thankfully, looks a lot better, both in terms of design and movements compared to the mediocre effort of its usage in last year's Fairy Gone.

The OP song sounds awesome, as well as the ED song, too. All in all, as someone who has a passion for cars in general, this show is already off to a good start. =D

Appare sold the show for me, I love characters like him. I think the part that sold me most was when he hit the guy with a hammer in jail, because that's the kind of thing where I'm like, "I relate to doing something like that, not to that extent of course, but as someone with Autism, I can relate to that"

Lets goo been waiting on this ever since Fairy Gone ended. Really original concept for an anime

Heads up, if you’re watching on Funi. They forgot to upload it subbed, so it’s just the raw right now.

OP is a banger, love the visuals and song

Loving Appare’s personality as well, the banter with kosame is really funny. This reminds me a lot of FLCL back in the day with the style and vibe. Appare himself is a really fun character who has a lot in common with Senku

CGI was a lot better than Fairy Gone’s first ep which is good, P.A have improved

Overall really fun first episode which set up the series very well. Fun main characters, original concept and an interesting setting. Can’t wait to see where this goes

The difficulty I had on Funi, is that even when it was uploaded, I couldn't actually see it, because the footage was all pixelated, it may have been the app I was using, but I refuse to use Funi's main website directly

I had a bit of trouble relating Appare, at least in this episode. Sure, he's smart but the fact that he often blows off everyone around makes him come off like a jerk. That said, his attitude and dynamic with Kosame right into the comedic element the series is trying to go for. Overall, this was a good way to start the show. I'm not expecting much for it, but it could be fun.

I wouldn't say he comes off as a jerk. as someone with autism myself, he kinda comes off like he's probably on the spectrum. That's how I can relate to him honestly, if that was the writer's intentions, with other guy acting as the more average joe that people who aren't on the spectrum can relate to. Just a hypothesis

Man, this is the weirdest start to the weirdest adaption of Wacky Races... and it's completely hard to not regard it as the anime closest to it.

I mean, that one vehicle looked so close to Dick Dastardly's. I'm glad people remember that oldie but goldie series.

The show has my interest, but not yet the characters. Still, it'll be interesting how they get from Japan to the US (Wait, that was a fuckin' quick trip across an ocean), and how a boat becomes a big boi steam car.

It's inspirational Appare, but... I don't think you can survive until the 1960s.
"You know you've reached peak quality when a doujin is better than the actual source series." (Eg. To LOVE-Ru)

Just to list a couple of biases.
Likes: A good story, characters, writing, romance, a good plot twist or something that breaks expectations (In a good way), 'backstory' and justice.
Dislikes: Bad romance, too much fanservice, the harem genre, yuri, yaoi, and bad writing.

This could be interesting. The characters are engaging, and so is the world. I wonder how historically-parralel this will run?

Saved by a big boat when they were doomed at the sea?

I was somehow disappointed that the story feels like it needlessly has to flesh everything out instead of going for the race early on. The opening scene looked fun and interesting with colorful cars and characters that contrasts poor with the kinda boring plot in Japan.

At least they´ve gotten to America that might build a more interesting scenario of being a foreign environment for them to explore. And I hope they get to the race as soon as possible.

Lmao

I really enjoyed the first episode. The dynamic between the lead characters is very Spongebob-Squidward like, mixed with that one Tom and Jerry movie I guess? If the rest of the series is as fun as it's first episode it'll be an easy recent favourite.

Pretty average first episode, 5/10. I'll give it a few more episodes to see if I like it any.

I honestly thought the kids was a girl. I guess it's the outfit, hair and...lips/face(?). What's with the lipstick joker looking face stuff? Idk if there's significance to it or not.

The trap MC Appare is quite the unique fellow, bit of a horrible attitude and annoying to deal with but good thing he has someone like Kosame who tries to understand him. Didn't expect a unique race anime, but I'm already digging this interesting setting.

Love the first episode, the opening scene reminds me of Hanna-Barbara's Wacky Races. But more importantly is the red haired main character and their personality, the first thing they made me think of is digibro/diginee's ideas on autism and neurotyping and that this character is most definitely a genius autist, who comes off as eccentric because of it. This coupled with the seeming analogy of youth being held back and repressed by a family and society which instead of restraining should have been helping and nurturing leads to the show seemingly being about world discovery past the walls you had previously not known and learning to survive on your own within this new greater world; resulting is self discovery and awareness by being allowed to truly be yourself unrestrained by the aforementioned bonds.

Beyond the red haired main character, the dynamic between the two is clearly the japanese straight man- funny man Manzai routine, save that the 'funny one' isn't played as a joke or even weird by narrative directing or acting but only by contrast the other characters being 'normal'.
