As a heteromorph, Shoji really never had a good life being scarred by the people in his village, and now is facing off against the Paranormal Liberation Front's leaders, which Spinner leads a pack of mobs in the city to invoke hatred, continuing what Re-Destro failed to realize by his ambitions, alongside Koda and other pro Heroes.

Obtusely, Spinner being filled with All For One's power drives him insane, and as much as that scar leaves Shoji with octopus arms, he still chooses to give hope to people, and that's his goal now facing someone very similar to him, as well as the mob of the same creatures to issue his statement. Koji following Shoji with the same ambition, but it soon becomes clear that there's just no way to control Spinner with how manipulated he has become for evil's cause.

Congrats Shoji, graduating into the main character spotlight.

Manga readers seemed to hate these chapters when they came out due to people thinking that the themes of quirk discrimination came out of nowhere, in addition to other more justifiable problems, but I thought those chapters and this episode were fine. I'm quite happy that Shoji finally got a backstory and an actual role in the story.

Well, let's be honest, how much of an actual heteromorph discrimination have we seen over the course of this show? Especially, considering amount of heteromorphs among UA students, heroes and other prominent characters.
It really could've been set up better, is all I'm saying...
@AlexTrusk To be fair, they did point out that the discrimination issue seems to be a lot less of a thing in urban areas, and the majority of the show is focused on urban areas and the people who live there (and are unaware of what happens in rural places). That being said, it would've been good to hint at that earlier, even just as a handful of (seemingly) throwaway lines.

So, a villains have gaslit a mob into throwing a riots, so villains would fullfil their own agenda?
Damn, thankfully something like that would never happen in real life.

Right?

Bones did fine adapting this, but the story here is still the arc’s worst by far. Maybe in the whole series.

It went into the discrimination against the people with heteromorph quirks. I found it very interesting how Shoji and Spinners views clashed. (Also Koji and Shoji finally do something cool).

Not gonna lie, I'm kinda surprised it took MHA this long to fully address the topic of discrimination against people with mutation quirks.

That said, solid episode overall. Shouji's backstory was moving and gotta say I really liked the message they tried to convey.
By the way, Kouda naming one of his attacks after Hitchcock's The Birds was sooo good~

The author finally showed us one of the most talked issue of this show the problems of human and animals coexisting, and shouji backstory was so emotional and from how he went form the same hardships like other animals but he didn't become a villain instead held on to a single good memories and form there he became a hero, this is called good writen .... never expected that the author will give a detailed and so good backstory for such a small side character
..... he really pays attention to everything he is making either its his side characters or addressing issues or plot holes left unanswered in the past ....

It may be the Hitchcockian in me but "Hitcock birds" may be my favorite move. LOL

This was one of the best episodes this season. Great backstory Tentacole and he we finally saw behind the mask not to mention a bit about Anima who levelled up. An emotional and action packed episode. Definitely my favorite.

Shoji vs Spinner. It is the battle of the heteromorphs in front of the Central Hospital. We get to see the backstory of Shoji and Anima. Spinner is getting unstable with the quirks from All for One.

i didn't expect an episode focused on the theme of discrimination and racism, i'm positively surprised by how good and emotional this episode was, even if the discrimination theme setup wasn't explored much in the show.
it's a little sad that spinner lost his mind thanks to all for one's power up, i liked him before.
good job Shoji, you made my cry, and i'm happy that even Koji got some screentime.

I totally disagree with the comment stark7000
It wasn't even an episode of spinner
He was just a vehicle in this episode of the heteromorph discourse
And used by all the parties
In the end spinner is showing how empty of a character he always was and needed the tomura flashback( a deranged villain who loves to disintegrate living beings) to show he can feel things.
But a very good Shoji episode
Shoji Became Way Better Than Bakugo in An Instant to be called a Hero.
Koda had a moment for no reason lol

I didn't like this racism subplot in the manga because it kinda appeared out of nowhere, it was hinted at a bit in the previous season but not enough for me to care about it so it's a half-assed cooked subplot, the anime did make this subplot a bit better at least but it's not enough for me to actually give a fuck about it, I mean, we are 7 seasons in and this is where you finally bring this up? just no.

And not to mention, I don't like those characters either, they deserve their screen time and they finally got it, but I just don't give a fuck about those characters, and Spinner is still one of the dumbest, worst-written villains ever in this franchise, I just don't give a fuck about that guy either and he gets way too much screen time, so this episode is pretty much a nothing burger to me, not a bad episode by any means, but I just don't give a rats ass about this late subplot or those characters.

Anyway, the manga started to go downhill in this final arc, but it's still a decent season so far.

Honestly, before this episode idrc about this whole fight. I dont even know why I didnt like this little confrontation, I dont even think I read the chapter back when it released but damn after choosing to push through this episode, I am so glad I did. Shoji showed how to be a real hero by showing how he could move an entire force with just his words

Shoji's backstory was really emotional and it made me tear up, but the fight sequence with spinner was also great! The racist aspect of the quirk society was something I overlooked as an anime only, but Shoji's backstory highlighted the issue once again. Overall, it was a fine watch.

Oh good lord the anime got to this. This is genuinely one of the worst racism allegories I've ever seen a story since Zootopia. Heteromorph discrimination didn't completely come out of nowhere per se but it was set up extremely poorly before. Outside of a few offhand remarks, it was easy to assume that this was just like Dragon Ball's world where animal people were just a regular part of the world that was accepted. Even besides that aspect, I really dislike how the heteromorphs are presented as this ravenous angry mob where their core leaders are Spinner, who's acting increasingly mindless and beast-like, and someone who's practically cult leader is a really bad look for this. I don't believe Horikoshi actually had any ill will with this plotline, but I really hate how this is handled. (Also of ALL people why did they have the heteromorphs tell Rock Lock, a black man, to his face that he'd never understand discrimination???)
@SiriusStarlight Couldn't agree more. This is a classic case of when they make the antagonist(s) have a really strong argument for why they do what they do (in this case, heteromorphs have experienced extreme discrimination and hero society has done nothing to curb it) and then they'll have the antagonist do something problematic to discount the purpose of their plight.

This mischaracterization is sinister because to the the ignorant watcher, it's easy to think that most/all oppressed people who mount a resistance movement to achieve justice are nonsensical and excessively violent in their approach. It's just not true -- but it is an excellent way to strawman an antagonist's argument and make them look insane. Not the first time time MHA has done this either, which is so disappointing and angering.

Spinner could've been a level-headed leader that would be able to convey the meaning of the heteromorph movement, but A4O basically dulled his mind to make him a mindless leader -- completely neutering their cause (why on earth would Spinner call Shoji gross? That was such an out-of-character line that they just had to throw in to further discredit what he stood for). Just lazy storytelling in terms of actually depicting the true issue and search for solutions by Horikoshi. It would've been so much more impactful to actually have Shoji be interested in pushing heroes and hero society to seriously address the root of heteromorph oppression instead of his toothless "don't do revenge" rhetoric.

I tend to lean towards the side of "if I didn't care for it, I just keep it moving" but unfortunately, I do agree with some of the gripes when it comes to this episode or maybe the show itself. This could've been an amazing episode if it didn't feel shoehorned in. If the show held this kind of weight consistently, this would've felt very grounded and the payoff much better. Now I can't 100% blame the show for me not caring about certain characters but gosh the flashbacks got annoying. Some for sure were needed but again, now? Maybe I missed their development in earlier seasons but in the middle of a huge point of conclusion, the show decides to give me more about these characters. I give the episode credit, VA work and some other portions were done well.

This episode hurt me!! A group of people were demonized and brutalized, so common within our society (and is happening this very minute). The flashback to multiple massacres against them and Shoji’s trauma really brings us to feel for them (literally the one episode where is was explained and the main focus). They will be seen as terrorists if they rise up to fight for just the right to live. Do you do nothing in hopes it gets better or do you fight for equality, to be treated fairly/justly? Damned if they do and damned if they don’t.

This is such a morally gray area, I feel for the heteromorphs it hurts to see them beat up by the police and the flashbacks of the mob attacks (lynching). But of course the crowd of heteromorphs are being led by the villains and there is an ulterior motive. In the end the heteromorphs are being used by All For One, manipulating their rage and trauma to fulfill his goals. Also I am soooo worried about the gunshot (acab fr).

My poor Shojiiii trying to uplift the status of hetemorphs all aloneee, I hated how the mob beat up Shoji and Koji and called them traitors!!! They just want to protect innocent people, they’re trying to create a new futureee.

Fun fact a psychopath bear maced me and friends, called me a terrorist, and threatened to sa us🤪

This episode was very interesting. Discrimination against heteromorphs was implied in earlier seasons, but it never really got focus like it did in this episode. I would’ve loved if it had gotten more attention in previous episodes, especially since kids can say really mean and harsh things to those they perceive as different. But at the same time, that’s kind of the beauty of this episode. Heteromorph rights are always pushed to the side and are only made relevant when another group can use their anger for their own agenda. (7/10)

The fight with Shigaraki has been dragging so much that it's been boring me, so I was actually happy to see a subplot to break the monotony. There were some hints of heteromorph discrimination before, it didn't come out of nowhere, what did come out of nowhere is the liberation front being basically BLM. I thought they were more like anarchists, not BLM. Whether intentionally or not Hori pointed out the obvious, that rioting and destroying a city won't improve race relations, so uhhh based???

You can't throw in a random racism subplot after you've spent 7 seasons never showing any signs of racism anywhere.
The cheap writing tricks just keep getting worse, I don't know why I keep expecting the show to somehow become good again.
@RedJeanne Bro, just cause you don't remember any of it doesn't mean it doesn't exist. If you wanna rewatch the entirety of MHA, you'll find it. If not, you can just take my word for it that it's been there this whole time. Up to you.

Well in this episode we learned a lot about the discrimination that exists in this world.

There are still people that exists that will go out of their way to ruin heteromorphs’ lives. We saw a sneak peek of this last season with the big lady that Deku saved. In the beginning of the series, we saw the light side of this world and now that we’re diving deeper in this war, we get to see the gray, the dark, and everything in between.

I understand why Shoji has always worn a mask, and I credit the creators for keeping this in mind for his design early on. Not every clothing choice needs to have a story to it, but it’s cool when it does. For example, there’s a reason behind the swirl on the Leaf Village’s Chunin jackets. It represents the ties the Leaf has with the Uzumaki clan.

What a tragic life Shoji must have lived. I get why Koda, Tokoyami, and other city people wouldn’t understand the struggle.

Regardless, Spinner’s fight won’t change things if he wins. If anything, this can cause more persecution because people will fear heteromorphs more. I think Spinner is slowly becoming a Nomu, because his ability to think is becoming more and more nonexistent.

But he’s pushed into the hospital, so what will the heroes do. It’s sad to see that the police chief has resorted to actually killing these people when that isn’t real justice.

I can’t wait to see not only the physical battles, but the battles of ideologies even more!

Instead of dwelling on the bad memories he wants to focus on the one good memory he has is a great way of thinking that I really respect.
