Damn, such an emotionally outburst episode especially for the character Spinner. Never really being a fan of his but this side of Spinner was intense.

Hell, if anything, this episode showed what he's really capable of as a villain. Props to the VA who can protray his character so damn well. Same to Shoji too.

Shoji went from being a background character to have a main character backstory all in one single episode. The reasoning for why he wears the mask and everything he does in spite of what he's been through is one of the most compelling things I've seen.

Shoji turned out to be a better Naruto than Naruto.

MHA really fleshes out their side characters

Finally, the racism episode.

Manga readers seemed to hate these chapters when they came out due to people thinking that the themes of quirk discrimination came out of nowhere, in addition to other more justifiable problems, but I thought those chapters and this episode were fine. I'm quite happy that Shoji finally got a backstory and an actual role in the story.

He finally graduated from being a cardboard cutout UA student.

Also, it was a decent adaptation of the source material. No plus-ultra sakuga moments but the production was decent overall. The rest of the chapters this season will be adapting are top tier MHA content, so I hope Bones pulls out all the stops when adapting it.

Unlike when previous seasons were airing and I was pessismistic about the production of future episodes, this season seems like it had a healthy production so I'm relatively optimistic about the rest of the season looking fire.

Well, let's be honest, how much of an actual heteromorph discrimination have we seen over the course of this show? Especially, considering amount of heteromorphs among UA students, heroes and other prominent characters.
It really could've been set up better, is all I'm saying...

The central hospital zone is different from others in that the battle cannot win by pure physical strength alone. This is mind game, and the line between manipulated civilians and villains is very blurry.

Each episode in season 7 is hard to watch but in the end I'm glad I watch it. I must know hell so that I can know what heaven looks like.

This did feel like it came out of nowhere in terms of themes, characters and progression of the plot. Still, as a self contained mini arc within this battle I overall decently enjoyed it and look forward to the conclusion next week. I'm mostly glad that these two characters are actually being given a role for once as they were so forgettable before now I don't even remember their names.

@AlexTrusk

Honestly you're right. Horikoshi could've explored heteromorph discrinimation a lot more, and the small ways he does explore it aren't particularly that well-written.

However, it's a small plot thread that's explored decently enough, in a series where many of it's smaller plot threads are explored decently enough. It certainly wasn't as horrible as many manga readers made it out to be.

Sometimes you watch/read something that's just fine, not bad or mid, simply fine.

Oh good lord the anime got to this. This is genuinely one of the worst racism allegories I've ever seen a story since Zootopia. Heteromorph discrimination didn't completely come out of nowhere per se but it was set up extremely poorly before. Outside of a few offhand remarks, it was easy to assume that this was just like Dragon Ball's world where animal people were just a regular part of the world that was accepted. Even besides that aspect, I really dislike how the heteromorphs are presented as this ravenous angry mob where their core leaders are Spinner, who's acting increasingly mindless and beast-like, and someone who's practically cult leader is a really bad look for this. I don't believe Horikoshi actually had any ill will with this plotline, but I really hate how this is handled. (Also of ALL people why did they have the heteromorphs tell Rock Lock, a black man, to his face that he'd never understand discrimination???)

I definitely agree with others here that this heteromorph discrimination plot kinda came out of nowhere with pretty much no mention of it before this, I was also under the assumption that, like Dragon Ball, it was just a normal thing in this world to have animal people and whatnot, so it felt like this wasn’t built up properly, but I still enjoyed this episode quite a bit. Really it makes sense that this kind of thing would happen in a world where people suddenly started having quirks, some that transformed people beyond recognition, and for me that would be pretty messed up to witness, I would definitely have trouble getting used to that being something that can just happen. And I’d say they they did a decent enough job showcasing the discrimination, the fact it mainly happens outside of cities kinda helps explain why we haven’t seen it until now, tho I will say it is very unfortunate Rock Lock was the one to be told he wouldn’t understand discrimination like someone else here mentioned lol.

But besides that stuff, I mainly liked this episode because it finally gave characters like Shoji and Anima, who were mainly background characters despite being in Class A, a moment in the spotlight, and they were quite the awesome moments, Shoji was really badass taking on that scale-armored Spinner and it was cool seeing Anima become stronger, each of their backstories were nice to finally see too, a shame it took 7 seasons to happen tho lol. And Spinner is quite far gone, the man is leading a “revolution” but can barely think straight, and to top it off he became even more monster-like when he use the scales quirk, but I really love the design and it’s definitely made the fight on this front more interesting. And the next episode looks like it’s also focusing on this same conflict, which is nice because I’d like to see each of these fronts to completion rather than hopping around.

Shoji making a statement to all the downtrodden assaulting the hospital! An incredible episode touching upon some very sensitive topics that resonate to our own world. Shifting focus away from Deku and Shigaraki onto the heteromorphs at the hospital trying to free Kurogiri. Leading the charge is Spinner with his multiple new quirks from All For One, not only a body buff quirk but the scale armor too. Spinner has fully lost what he started all this for, guided only by rage. Stoking the flames of those already hurt by society, using their unrest to make a blade that cuts all sides. Shoji and Koda trying their best to stop the angry heteromorphs from destroying the hospital. Even the heroes last season when they raided that hospital they got all the patients and staff out first, these angry people aren't even doing that. The villains are manipulating these people's suffering for their own ends. That one loudmouth on top of the building completely making things worse with his words any time Shoji made some ground in convincing them. Or when Spinner own words and actions contradicted what he said before that guy would cover it up and make the meteromorphs angry again. It was great to see Koda stand up for Shoji and shut that guy up with that flock of Hitchcock birds. Shoji has been through his own suffering, seeing the flashbacks to how he got those scars in his hometown was brutal. Just for existing he was hurt so badly by horrible people. Saving that little girl from the rushing river just to get scared for it. Shoji is strong for not letting those bad memories cloud his mind and instead focusing on the good memory of that grateful girl. His big punch on Spinner looked awesome! I loved how the animation looked there. Doesn't seem like it broke through as Spinner is now inside the hospital on his way to Kurogiri!

It was long overdue for Shoji to have the spotlight for himself and for the subject itself involving heteromorph discrimination does make for a tense viewing due to how high the anger from the mob following Spinner has become.

Shoji's backstory itself is a depressing one and I can only imagine that most people in his position here would snap back in anger and retaliation. He did go and save a small girl from drowning, which showcases how much of a hero he was then, even if those villagers treated him like utter crap.

His stance and defense against Spinner was very impressive. Same goes for Koji, whose newly transformed look with horns made for a another good moment of this episode. Sadly, despite their efforts, Spinner was able to break into the hospital. I hope he gets stopped before he reaches Kurogiri, but you can't rule anything out at this point.

It was high time Koji and Shoji got some time for character development. We got to see the former's backstory and fight with discrimination which trascended into the episode as well as the latter's power-up which didn't amount to much but it was at least related. One can understand where the episode is coming from but at the same time focusing on this topic after 7 season feels too late and takes away from its impact. The action is still good and carried the episode but from a narrative perspective it could have been done a lot better.

Agree that the whole heteromorph discrimination was set up very underwhelmingly. Apart from the tall girl earlier this season and some off-hand remarks, it was never really touched on.

Though, i guess that's a good thing in itself. I like my entertainment free of irl politics. Couldn't help but roll my eyes imagining more of this topic. Hope they conclude this part of the plot quickly and go back to the real action :)
I'm not reading any replies or comments directed at me at all. I know my truth and if you disagree: that's fine but i couldn't give a damn about :)

We've reached the heteromorph racism plotline where Shoji finally gets some long overdue characterization. Most of the people who have commented before me have already pointed out that the setup/build up to this was pretty lackluster, but it's still a topic I'm glad Horikoshi touched on. It's also just nice to see some of the lesser-utilized UA students get the spotlight for once, I genuinely don't think Koda or Shoji had a significant moment in the series prior to this point. The VAs did a great job as well, bringing out their heightened emotions.

I bet people are quite angry that we strayed away from the main fight, but I liked the episode regardless. It focused more on the backstory of some side characters, and the story was understandable. I specially liked Anima's Hitchock Birds, as a metatextually attack. Once again though, the villaians have plot armor, but well, we'll see what happens next week.

It's pretty wild to me that heteromorphs in that world are so hated. I guess prejudice will always exist no matter what. But all the victims/oppressed leading such a destructive riot is not the right way to fix anything. All it does is prove that their opposition was right. In the end, they're harming no one but themselves. The fact that they're led by someone who's nearly a brain-dead zombie and a hypocrite who shouts big words from far away and doesn't actually participate in the riot himself is just the cherry on top. All things aside, Horikoshi cooked here. However, the big issue is it feels like it came outta nowhere and this episode didn't have the proper build-up it needed to become a huge payoff like say some of the other episodes of the season.

I was not expecting to like this episode so much.

Instead of cramming several flashbacks into this ep to artificially ramp up the depth of the controversy, they really should've sprinkled in those scenes throughout the series more. Especially the heteromorph heroes, their struggles and perspectives could've been way more fleshed out earlier. Even the setup for this mob was relegated to a flashback instead of properly built up over the season. It would make the rising action in this episode and arc more satisfying. The team knew that, that's why all the flashbacks are crammed in. But the execution of that is just poor. The whole conflict feels so slapped together.

It's not that surprising...

The fact that people without Quirks were already bullied upon, you think this world they're in are going to be kind to people that doesn't look like humans?

Not to mention people with multiple limbs... in our world, most people also call them gross in video games and such (tons of streamers and influencers do this, and they spread it to their followers). This is also shown with popular superheroes from our world's comic, such as Spiderman... everyone loves spiderman, except that time when he has multiple spider limbs in his early story (like 20+ years ago). Since then, all spiderman series never have spiderman with multiple limbs... only "technological mecha limbs". (or only a few seconds of view from "spiderverse")

.

This episode is a reflection of that. Which is why 90% of "good guys" in our world's superhero series, are always humanoid based (2 arm, 2 leg), and 90% of "bad guys" are heteromorph based.

The emotion and justification these guys in BokuHero isn't really misplaced... in a way... they have the rights to riot.

Except they makes it look like the heteromorphs are the "bad guys" by making them attacking a hospital.

Imagine if Kurodude was placed in a prison instead, I am sure it would have less impact.

.

Riots in the city due to external racism, police against a huge crowd, criticism of the illusion of equality... don't tell me Horikoshi was inspired by what I'm thinking about.

@0451 I love how this episode both illuminates the treatment of characters with specific appearances in their universe and teaches that oppression in response to oppression will not solve the problem, but will only make it worse.
