Something about the character designs in this episode looked a little off. Did they switch studios between seasons?
Not sure why, but the last clip in the desert looked like an OVA from the 90s, and not in a flattering way. I'm hoping Lightning looks better going forward.
Is it just me or did any of you find this episode to be very fast paced? There was no downtime in scenes at all in this episode. Just one plot after the next.
It's been quite awhile since we last saw this team, and working together like this on top of that. The art is actually good, which is a surprise cause the PVs didn't do it any favors. Let's see what this season of Ao has to offer. Hopefully better than Kyoto arc.
I've forgotten most of everything about the world, but it was nice to see the gang again.
And with UVERworld, feels nostalgic.
This show always reminded me of the shounen anime from the early 2000's, glad to have it back!
It's been six years, and now we're back? I'm honestly a bit baffled about why they decided to make a sequel after all this time, but hey, I'm not complaining – I'm excited to see what they've come up with.
UVERworld is back, doing the OP, and it's just okay.
Born as the offspring of satan himself, Rin Okumura, a young boy aspiring to become an exorcist, takes on the troubles of his classmate, Makoto Godaiin, who struggles with seeing demons. Despite seeking advice from fellow exorcists like Ryuji Suguro, who also attends True Cross Academy, no solution is found to help Godaiin stop seeing demons. Meanwhile, Rin receives an invitation to dinner from Mephisto, the Chairman of True Cross Academy and the Head of the Japanese branch of the True Cross Order.
I'm genuinely confused about why they decided to bring back this Shounen series, and like I mentioned before, I'm all in for it. My only worry is that the Shounen landscape has transformed so much since the last time Blue Exorcist was active. Also studio VLON is not doing the art at least justice. Rin looks ugly as fuck. hat Godaiin guy better not forget to use the eye lotion and end up turning into another villain.
But, it looks like Mephisto's view on Rin hass changed. Whatever the hell that may mean for him...
@IzanaSolos they literally did the 6 year wait from season 1.... if you look at it they're playing 666
Even though I only watched blue exorcist a few years ago, it feels so nostalgic to see everyone back in full force. Really felt like nothing changed even with a new studio at the helm (character designs felt different to me but it’s to be expected). Another great Uverworld OP, can’t wait for this season we are off to a good start.
Since this series has been away for a while, the small recaps on what happened last season is enough for people to start here, and not rush in watching the previous season. Shrewd move.
Baby we are so back! It feels like 2011, alright and I can't be much happier. Seeing all the characters back is such a treat. Sure, the new art style (true to the manga) will take some time o get used to and I wish we saw more of Yukio and sheimi but I ain't complaining.
Can't wait for more episodes and to see Amaimon too!
I'm really happy that Blue Exorcist got another season after such a long break. I liked the first episode of season 3! It had a little bit different vibe tho, I felt like I was in hogward in some scenes lmao. Art style change is very noticible and kinda chaotic but I don't mind it
The new Art direction threw me off a bit but that was not nearly as bad as the pacing for this episode. I hope it slows down cause if it doesn’t this should have been a 24 episode season how I see it.
Seven years later and no recap made me laugh a little. Anyway not a super hype sequel but I will be here for whatever tiny amount of lines Ayahi Takagaki gets as the cat
I cross checked the episode with the manga and it's not looking good...
It's been only 1 episode and already aforementioned Kraken arc got cut and pretty much entire 7 Wonders of Academy arc. They only left the family portrait bit which was like the arc finale. Not to mention that the entire point of that arc was to show that their teamwork is super bad which was partially the reason Koneko took the leadership...
So far I'm not too happy. 4 axed chapters isn't boding well. Especially since this is a single cour show and they need to cram 20 double length chapters in 11 remaining episodes, which is like 72 pages per episode.
And this sucks. Illuminati arc is by far my favourite part of the story.
Did Rin cut his hair or is it just the art being derpy? :") maybe I should rewatch a few episodes from last season. Also feel like everything went by too fast, and unfortunately it does seem like they are rushing it.. not really a good start but still going to continue.
I waited so long for this season to come out and I couldn’t wait to see the manga adapted into an anime. But the first episode is so fast and messy. Its like they’re rushing it to end the anime as quickly as possible and the animation is nothing compared to the second season. I really hope its gonna get better soon…
Ao No Exorcist is finally back. I always had a soft spot for this series.
From what I can see, all the main characters' voice actors have reprised their roles.
Our beloved old-fashioned dumb shonen protagonist is back (Mephisto, ARE YOU A DEMON?!!! I mean, come on, Rin).
UVERworld is back.
Sadly, A1 Pictures are not back. We will need some time to get used to the new studio style (I heard it's closer to the manga?)
Wow, this was some truly horrible pacing for a first episode. Just absolutely all over the place, rushing from scene to scene without any sort of transition between them - leading to all sorts of erratic and confusing cuts (particularly the one going from Rin being suspicious of Yukio hiding something to everyone suddenly being in an art gallery with Mephisto) - and with a bizarrely light-hearted tone on top of that. The tone in previous seasons was considerably less light and comedic, so this just felt really jarring on top of the terrible pacing.
Not a good sign for this third season of Blue Exorcist, that's for sure. Hopefully it doesn't get any worse.
I've forgotten most of everything about the world, but it was nice to see the gang again.
And with UVERworld, feels nostalgic.
This show always reminded me of the shounen anime from the early 2000's, glad to have it back!
Spectacles kid stepping up into a leading role was great.
Also loved how cute Rin looked in a suit, hmmm nice.
Promising start, the whole friendship found family vibe is making me happy that I spent all of last week binging the previous 2 seasons so I could be read for this!
The animation is slightly different which bugged me at first but it wasnt as noticable as the episode went on.
I dont remember Konekomaru being able to be that vocal so it felt out of character, but ig you gotta do what you can to make your dumb friends realize they need to stop and think.
Overall an okay episode. I expect the season to be good, going to wait for it to finish airing so I can binge it. Need to rewatch the past seasons anyways. Glad Blue Exorcist is continuing.

I think that the Kyoto arc was absolute garbage, like, total trash (even tho the animation was great), so I really, REALLY hope this arc is way better.
So far so good.
Izumu my beloved, I missed her ❤️
Sorry if my english is bad (っ˘▽˘)っ~~~
Btw, cry about it.
I'm so excited for season 3!! I don't really remember what happens in this arc of the manga beyond some basic plot points, but the 1st episode has got me excited for the rest of the season :) The animation looks great and the opening being performed by UVERworld again had me so hyped!
As a big manga head for this series, I want to share my thoughts and compare a little bit between the manga, the A-1 seasons, and what we have so far by Studio VOLN
A-1 and VOLN:
Studio VOLN only has 7 titles under their name so far including Ao No Exorcist, The biggest other than this show being "I Want to Eat Your Pancreas." It makes sense for them to take up this show if another studio is dropping it to help make a name for themselves. Given this information, A-1 was able to give this show a bigger budget, and thus was more high-quality. So far, the show has an ok quality. It does have some obvious shortcuts like some frame dropping and only animating certain areas over long-ish shots, but it could be worse. There is very little animation inconsistencies, and for me, with a studio change, that's a win (looks at Seven Deadly Sins).
VOLN and Manga:
From what I'm seeing so far, VOLN is skipping a good chunk of stuff to get to the main focus of the season, and that makes sense to me. The Kraken thing (loosely) happened already, and Amaimon not being in the fake Gahenna made more time for other stuff. Other people have brought this up, and for the most part what was lost one one or two nice character moments, so I want to get to what I havent seen on here.
The seven school mysteries turned into one exorcism, the family portrait. I highly doubt we will see the other ones, because this was the last mystery that they had to go up against. Something that could've been like two or three episodes was shortened to part of one, I'm assuming to get to the main plot of the season.
(edit: something I thought they skipped that did happen cuz they changed the order of stuff in ep 2. Interesting choice, but whatevs) However, we do miss a couple of things related to Goddain and Rin, like how Rin told him he was half demon BEFORE he got the eye drops. I think this is important because it helps show that to regular people, this is not a normal thing, it is scary. It cements the idea that the exorcist world thinks different from the regular world, and that something like this is a lot scarier to those outside of it. Goddain is initially scared of Rin, and that being thrown out the window didn't feel right to me.
VOLN, Manga, and A-1:
So the art style is very obviously different from the last season. However, I think this new season is actually closer than the first two. A-1 changed colors of a few characters' hair for some reason, mainly Rin, and Shiemi's Mother. I understand Shiemi's mom, cuz we may not even know what her actual hair color is (blonde makes sense tho), but to change one of the MC's hair to make him look more MC-like was an interesting choice. To change it back in season two was an interesting choice. To go back to the manga plot line in the second season WITHOUT explaining it the Anime-Only fans was a very interesting choice. They did a couple flashbacks and that's it. At least VOLN, knowing they are not the same studio as before, gave SOME explanations to people that may not have seen the first two seasons for some reason. For an anime series that is as jumbled together as this one, they are doing a good job at that part.
Back to the art style, sorry about my rant, VOLN is closer to the art style of the original than A-1. Because Katou has such unique character designs, many of the characters look close or exactly the same. But if you are comparing the art styles to the manga, It's the most apparent in Shiemi, as an important character with a more generic character design. A-1 season one was a very different art style, but they went more towards Katou's style in season two. This season is just about as far off as season two was in different ways, some inconsistencies are likely because of budget things mentioned before. However, VOLN is bringing out some of the best parts out of Katou's style: the suble things.
The way Katou draws characters is so precious, I love them all. She makes even the most generic looking characters have their own subtle differences in the same facial expressions, and that subtlety is is where she shines. She makes each character shine in their own way, whether it be a unique design ore unique and subtle part of others. A-1 took that away by changing art styles and colors on certain characters season one, then rectified it season two. Yes, VOLN's style is a is different than A-1's. Yes, it's not 100% consistent. But if someone thought that that smile towards the end wasn't Rin-enough, they are dead wrong. It is soooo him, in the best way possible. literal ripped from the manga feeling moment, must protect.
Overall:
I love that VOLN was able to bring back the original voice actors for the show, i know that doesn't always happen, and I appreciate the effort of getting them all back together. Overall, I feel like yes, it's not perfect. Yes, it's not a big studio so it won't be as high quality. Yes, they had to skip stuff to get to the next main arc, I expected that. We have to remember that this is just episode one, the setup if you will. They could be putting budget into other areas, they could not. Yes, the episode is rushed, but they had to set up a different arc that is lead my chapters of almost filler-feeling smaller events somehow. It's a decent start, and I will be happy to see where it goes from here (hopefully)
Mephisto's true name reveal was definitely better in the manga. Here, they rushed it and made it seem like not a huge deal. But I am glad they are (so far) adapting this arc accurately. Plus, I don't think Rin looks *that* bad, with shorter hair he looks cuter, but there were moments where he looked a little off. Honestly, I think Yukio looked worse, but that's just my opinion...
This was SO BAD! They rushed through content that it felt that absolute nothing happened. There's no way there people in this thread saying it was good, must be nostalgia. There was no episode in s1 or 2 that felt like this, hopefully next one is better. If not, this season is done for.
I was a bit shocked after first episode, because I didn't expect that. Ep 1 feels rushed regarding story and weird regarding faces. I mean, some faces are fine even with new style and animation and can't complain much, but then there is a Rin, as basically main of the mains characters in this anime and his face is... very different and very bad. Another issue I have is Mephisto's art, however I would say it's not that bad and I managed to get used to it within 1 episode. But Rin, well, jesus... I hope it's not that bad entire season, because it's really catching my eye in a bad sense.
I overall hope rest of the season will be better, it wasn't that bad but can't really compare it to previous seasons. Also yea, I missed UVERworld too and it was nice to hear them again. What a nice touch.
Blue Exorcist is back after 6 years and I'll admit that in that time, I've forgotten most of what previously happened and didn't go back and rewatch. But, it's cool to see the familiar faces back in action.
That was quite the trial Mephisto put them through, and I wonder what other shady plans he has in store. 🤔
I don't understand why some series give us recaps we don't need, like when the previous episode just happened, meanwhile something like this that is a sequel after YEARS wouldn't come with a .5 recap episode or at least a few minutes in the beginning or something. MAKE IT MAKE SENSE T_T
I absoloutly enjoyed it to be able to listen to Nakai Kazuya´s voice (aka Zoro from One Piece) as ,,Suguro, Ryuuji" and Kamiya Hiroshi´s (Trafalgar Law from One Piece) voice as ,,Pheles, Mephisto".
Was a really funny episode to watch. Keep on releasing good stuff! :3
