| Steins;Gate is extremely overrated. Like I applaud the series for using some real life terms like Sern (Cern in real life) and John Titor and pretty much got their theories right to an extent. But the pros just end there. Most cardboard cutout characters, some blatant and clear plot conveniences which even my gran can see and boring as f*ck first half which made me lose interest altogether dropping it in between. People say it gets good later on and it propelled me to episode 12-13 while dropping it 3 times in the process but I don't see the reasons why I should continue. |

Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood, while really good, is not really the best anime in my opinion. The adaptation FUCKING STRUGGLES a lot with the first 13 episodes. While yes the 2003 series exists, it is not really acceptable in my opinion to rush through content and then put all your effort in when you get to the new stuff. You have to look at a piece of art as a whole and not just the part where it "gets good" at. It is like this image, the beginning is fucking rushed and atrocious and it slowly gets better, therefore you can't really say that the whole show is a masterpiece.  You shouldn't rank episodes 1-13 as if they're a different show than 14-64, they are the same show and rushing through that early material DOES hurt the show overall. They even skipped on the Youswell Mining Town story in spite of the fact that Yoki who first appears in it shows up later and mentions it so viewers are gonna be left HELLA CONFUSED cuz he just tells you what happened which breaks the "show don't tell" rule of storytelling. Those first 13 episodes are 20% of the show when you break it down and to me, even if those last 51 episodes are a 10/10 (which to me they aren't I would grade them around an 8 or a 9), having a fifth of your shows total episode count being pretty bad should mark your score down. I gave FMAB an 8/10 because of my frustration with those early episodes and how in general, I just honestly preferred the older series better. The more character focused narrative of 2003 resonated with me much more than the action packed more standard narrative Brotherhood went for, and nothing really felt that rushed in 2003. 2003 knew when to take its time, and even if the plot heavily diverges from the manga, it is still a satisfying ending and the new direction they went in was honestly just more interesting to me. Even if Brotherhood didn't rush through those early chapters I would have honestly come to the same conclusion that the classic 2003 series was the better show due to my preferences. Brotherhood is honestly just kinda overhyped that to me it could not reach those lofty expectations set upon it, and everyone shitting on 2003 honestly made me honestly surprised when I sat down and watched it since I ended up with something that stuck with me more and challenged me to think. This sentiment seems more common in my local community as I have talked to many other anime fans in my local area and they seem to have similar opinions of the 2003 series and similar issues with Brotherhood, but when you look at the wider internet it feels like us 2003 fans are kinda the minority here. Don't get me wrong, I did enjoy Brotherhood in the end, but I felt less satisfied and had way more issues with it than 03. |
