I did not know about this project until a week ago and as you can tell from my list, I'm only familiar with Fate via their Ufotable projects so let me say GODDAMN this special was so good. All the aesthetic choices (especially the character designs which have this raw edge to it and the colour choices) and the way the story introduces all the Master-Servant pairs and hints of whats to come. So exicted when the full series drops hopefully with a simul-duv |

AnimePedestrian said: Yep, surely FSF isn't the first one to introduce prologue episode. The Fate franchise has been doing it since UBW. It's just to me, FSF prologue doesn't feel as concise as the other ones. Perhaps because FSF has a larger casts to introduce that it's close to impossible to make it shorter than it already is without decreasing the story telling quality. Yuu_Kanzaki said: I feel like I'm gonna get grilled for saying this, but that was kind of boring tbh. It has gripping start and incredible ending don't get me wrong, but everything sandwiched in between is weak. Yes I know this is only the prologue and a tv series has been announced, nothing can be done. The characters though, oof, you have the polite one, crazy one, cunning one, naive one, insolent one (dead) and... a dog(?) which makes it hard for me to believe there's more to them than that one different trait each of them possesses. I hope I'm wrong. I didn't like Flat in Apocrypha and I sure don't like him here. He is voiced by Matsuoka with that type of voice to boot. He's a master of Berserker and with what Jack says about him, I feel like Flat is going to go crazy sooner or later. That being said, I hear good things from LN readers and it seems this is adapted in a good way, so I will believe them. As a fate fan I feel a bit bad for doing this, but I give it a 7/10. ps. the hip hop music or whatever that shit was is fucking garbage. Who thought that was a good idea? I went into this expecting a prologue going in, as I'd read on here and on other forums that Babylonia and Unlimited Blade Works did a similar thing with a special to kick start the series. So I didn't mind it being a slower episode, explaining the rules, introducing key characters. In fact that always been one of my favourite parts of Fate. The slow opening of Zero and UBW also gets some heat, but I never really minded them as to have a good story you need to lay the ground work. I enjoyed the Flat and Jack dialogue, I got Waver and Iskandar vibes with a few differences such as Jack wanting to know who he really is. I imagine the next episodes will expanded the cast to the True Masters and Servants. Ps. I thought the hip hop was cool, it gave me Gurren Lagann vibes with all the rapping that show had in it. |

Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed this and am excited for the series. I though the music and voice acting were great too, but something didn't sit right with me on the animation side. The backgrounds are all beautiful and effects are great, but the characters themselves lacked "texture" if that's the right way to say it. Seemed like there was no shading done on them and it looked kind of flat. Reminds me a bit of the last few episodes of Apocrypha. Am I missing something stylistically or does the character animation seem off to anyone else as well? |

The first episode holds an importance, specially on Fate series, and the special for Fate Strange Fake keeps it true. It sets the tone very well, every scene makes me crave for the next one and so on. Can't wait to see how this fake holy grail war gonna develop, but all the pieces are already in their places to give us a great experience. |

This feels just like the opening for Fate/Zero and Fate/Apocrypha where the masters assemble and then summon their servants. Of course, as indicated in the show's title, it's a fake Holy Grail War, and even more so with no Saber class being eligible to participate. And this show takes place just outside of Las Vegas, though there are no casinos and what not to be found in Snowfield City. That was quite an epic battle between Gil and Enkidu there, and with that, it's easy to get excited about this show. And this show's MC doesn't appear until the very end of this special. Great stuff here, and I'm looking forward to the TV series. |

Despite its essence (the said story boarding) it looked horrible on screen with some off-modelling to add some insult. My guess is - the production was rushed. Another visual aspect I hated - very detailed backgrounds (a combination of traced photos and 3D CGI) and very low detailed character designs. Blue_Reaper7 said: That is stylistic choice. Than why the style is changing in many shots? If you ask me different teams worked on the project with little time and little communication between each other. |

are some people really complaining about visuals and soundtrack? As for the visuals, they were better than Fate/zero's and not that far from Ufotable Ubw. The artstyle is different but definitely very appropriate, i really like the character's and walking animation and the backrounds were incredibely detailled. As for the soundtrack, Sawano did an amazing job here, the hip hop part during the dialogue between Justice guy and caster as well as the credit song were my favorite parts. Also, is that old guy at the end chilling in the root? |

As for sawano he is a marvelous composer and i think he's gonna do godwork on this series. As for FGO visuals they were very average except for a couple episodes in babylonia. Cloverworks hasn't done such a good job with it and the best visuals i have seen in FGO were the trailers A1 pictures produced.Rocknblock said: are some people really complaining about visuals Yes...they weren't bad, but kind of inconsistent between the static and the action scenes. It was alright. Very Episode 0, mostly just a chain of summoning servants then monologuing while gazing at the skyline. Tiné and Flat where the only really explored characters, but that's reasonable for a special like this. I take it that just like the prologue to stay night, the first episode will wind back and show the whole day from Ayaka's perspective. Which is reasonable, her backstory is a lot to get through, it wouldn't have fit here. Though, I think culminating in the Gil VS Enkidu fight that we know ends in a fake out and isn't particularly easy to follow was a let down for the special as a whole. Gray cameos are always gray-t, and I really like that they kept the Zelretch and Caubac scene in. It's a shame that Mr. Cellphone's VA in the Carnival Phantasm special isn't listed, I'd like to have checked if they match. Although the music for the aforementioned fight was admittedly bad, I think it fits for an American Fate. As does the American faction shooting everyone. Ultimately it was carried by being an Episode 0, but it has given me high hopes for the eventual adaptation. The only question is, how far will it adapt? My rough estimate is that we wouldn't have enough for a full cour right now, so will it be a shorter piece, in several years, or go original? It should be interesting to see. AnimePedestrian said: Nachtwandler_21 said: Could someone explain why Ayaka is blond in this universe? Has she dyed her hair after the events of Prototype? That's a great question, maybe to blend in? Maybe it was an effort to differentiate her design from Rin's? Prototype takes place in a completely different timeline, entirely separate from the rest of Fate (it doesn't even share the same history, what with Arthur being male). Prototype hasn't happened for Ayaka here. Why Ayaka is blonde is still unclear even in the source material at this point, but an important piece of information that we get later on, that appears shall tie into it, is that she isn't actually the actual (for lack of a better word) counterpart of Prototype Ayaka, as another Ayaka, this one with black hair like normal, also exists in the world at this time. This version of Ayaka appears in Fate/school life, and Flat is acquainted with her. Ronninn said: Is El melloi canon or what, and won't gilgamesh remember waver considering those flashback he had Case Files and Adventures do not take place in the same timeline as strange Fake, no. Within the history of strange Fake, the events of stay night haven't transpired as we are familiar with them, and we can confirm this because Gray's hair isn't partially blonde as a reaction to Artoria being summoned in Fuyuki. Servants typically do not recall previous summons unless explicitly made to, such as by having information engraved into their Spirit Origin like Berserker Jack discussed with Flat. Of course, this is prone to an uncountable number of exceptions, sometimes Servants just keep memories in a seemingly random manner. Luffysenpai08 said: Is this a new fresh fate series or is sequel/prequel to any other? It's effectively a sequel to stay night and hollow ataraxia, but you would need to go through those before any Fate instalment, so you could say it is fresh. Could you explain the proper way that characters are supposed to summon the servants? Is it about respect ? You show respect and get better treatment from the servants , I know nothing about fate but I’m interested in learning could you please explain this specific aspect for me ? For all intents and purposes, you can summon almost any Servant at any point. On paper, they are chosen based on their compatibility with the Master (whether that be having a similar personality or a completely inverse one) and the specific summoning ritual performed (which can select a specific class, unless that class is already summoned or predetermined to be later summoned elsewhere). However, any servant can answer the call if they choose to or need to. Respect for a Servant is up to the Master. Some do indeed respect and honour the Heroic Spirit they have made a contract with, while others treat them as just a magical familiar, a slave. There is no real incentive to do either, since a Servant (usually) cannot rebel against their Master without being unsummoned, and Masters can use their Command Spells to (usually) get the Servant to do even things they don't want to. Obviously, though, treating a Servant well will make them a better and more willing fighter, so most Masters tend to at least tolerate their Servants as individuals and allow them general freedoms. To date, their is only one Servant to whom treatment as a condition for summoning really matters, and that is Saviour, Gautama Buddha. He will only be allow himself to be summoned if his intentions align perfectly with his Master, and if the Master strays from them he can choose to and is perfectly willing to immediately unsummon himself. Rocknblock said: i see. Does he have any link to Waver? I mean they are both members of the clocktower organisation. The most significant link the pair have is Rin. Zelretch was the progenitor of jewel magecraft, which the Tohsaka clan uses, and Waver takes Rin under his wing as an apprentice after the events of stay night. Although it is not clear how much they personally associate (and in which timelines), one confirmed instance of the two colluding is at the start of Prisma Illya. So, broadly, yes, the pair are linked. |

Apocrypha and Strange Fake break away around the third holy grail war. With Apocrypha's greater holy grail war following a series of subspecific holy grail wars whereas Strange Fake seems to take place post a near identical Fifth Holy Grail war similar to Stay Night. Prototype the number of Holy Grail Wars I think by the anime time is two. I think the Ayaka of Strange Fake is linked to the student that went missing in Fate/hollow ataraxia. But I'm not certain of this. However the hair colour change, someone suggested is due simply to the fact that Ayaka of HA and later Strange Fake simply has blonde hair compared to the Prototype Ayaka. |
