Anyway, how do you "anime completionist" make yourself complete an anime that you obviously dislike? Doesn't it feel like a chore sometimes? Well, I am an "anime completionist" myself and completing certain anime feels like a chore sometimes.

I kinda do this with anime. I used to watch any anime I can see on TV and I've watched enough shows to know what to do. Of course, I do have an big on-hold list, but it doesn't bother me because that list is my catchall.

I just use three rules - never start an anime I'm not remotely interested in, know what my response is to certain types of shows (for example, I'd watch a dub if I don't care too much about JP fidelity), and employ discipline.

It's been quite rewarding. This is because my favorite type of story is a story that ties everything together. The only way to find those is by watching the entire thing and taking it as a whole body of work.

Of course you get a lot of meh crap along the way, which is why the first step is to filter what you want to watch.

I'm definitely a completionist. I refuse to drop an anime no matter what. Even if it gets bad later on.

It does feel like a chore but I'm determined to finish it no matter what.

The animes in my on-hold list means what it says, ON-HOLD. I will continue to watch them one day. Not even planning on dropping them at all.

Help, I'm hooked into the Fate series (not all) and am obsessed with Shirou x Saber!
Also, forever hoping for a ufotable remake of the Fate route!

A permanent "on Hold" is the solution. You can come back whenever you want, except that you will forget everything and you'll have to rewatch the entire thing.

Op we all know you won't ever continue dragon ball super and that the on hold list is the replacement of the dropped list for chiken hearted people like you

I kept DB Super on hold because I was watching it while it was airing and it took around 3 episodes for Goku to finally transform to SSG and then I had to wait every week for a new episode even though the new episode didn't offer much to the story because DB Super had a slow pace. So, I thought I should wait until some new episodes come out. But yeah, I don't feel like watching it now, but I surely will. Perhaps, soon in the future. As for other anime on my "on hold" list, I kept them "on hold" list not because I hate them, but because of several other reasons like for Fate Zero, I thought I should complete F/SN VN first in order to get a good grasp of the story. I completed F/SN VN recently and now I plan to continue F/Z. Similarly for Naruto, it were fillers. For some others, I was busy with some other work, so I had to discontinue watching them. Though I surely will complete all of them. Btw I love F/Z even though I only saw the first few episodes of that anime yet because even the first few episodes were awesome.

If I don't like anime I can''t force myself watch even one episode not to mention about hundreds of Naruto filler episodes.

Yes, I completely understand how you feel. I can never bring myself to 'drop' a show, and probably never will be able to. And I watch every seasonal, this coming season will be my 5th straight season of watching every show. So yes, undoubtedly there are some terrible ones in there too. But it gives me a better appreciation for the really good ones.

Builds character! lol

I drop anime i simply do not enjoy, no reason to torture myself for no reason when I could be spending time trying to find a good anime i will actually enjoy.
That said if I am doing an anime watching challenge and a show I am watching is bad I'll just increase the playback speed x2 so a 20min episode is just 10min.
Much more bearable, can still say I watched all of it without torturing myself. Sometimes playing it faster makes it more interesting too since you're not waiting around for the next useless scene to start.

Baka_phnx said:

On this note I'd argue that if a show is so bad it fails too hook you half way thorough its going to fail at the end as well anyway, unless its a highly rated anime that people say you need to see the entirety of it to understand I just move on. Not worth wasting my time on it.

Yeah, no, I can't complete a series if I don't find it interesting (exceptions being Franxx and Sukasuka).

It's not that I want to drop it, it's just that I, eventually, start to put off watching more episodes until I simply don't care anymore.

I’m a completionist. But if I really dislike a show I give it a 1/10 rating and move on. Shows with low ratings will generally not be rewatched.

Also, I been forced to watch shows that I really disliked before by real life friends. So it goes to the completed section with low ratings.

I feel with you here! >.< yeah it’s basically a pain to go trough since I’m also kind of a perfectionist. But any anime I watch is mostly bc I saw scenes of it on Insta or YouTube and I liked them. So It can basically not be that bad. Also it’d be sad for the author and everyone involved to not appreciate their hard work, since I like to think they all put their heart in it.

I complete an anime because I find it interesting and compelling no matter how disgusting it is. Even if I dislike it, I want to see how it ends, will the conflict be gone, will the character I hate die, will they finish it with a rushed ending, or will they just leave me hanging like that....questions like this still comes to mind even when I watch a equally horrible show...say like Boku no Pico or School Days. I want to see how it ends. And so, its not a chore at all. I dont know, but for me, its a necessary process even to experience distasteful and horrible things. I would go through that if given a chance and so that what makes me realize that "oh, its already the last episode? that was not good at all. still its an experience I would not forget."

I don’t like spoilers so I usually comple everything I watch. There are some rare occasions where I do drop something but it either really long, I don’t feel like watching it or I forgot about it. When I don’t like the show I’m watching I usually put it I. The background while doing something(Which is mainly the reason on why I watch dub) also I always tell my self when I watch something I didn’t like I should drop it but when I’m 3 ep in I’m like maybe it will get better when it’s in ep 6 and if I don’t like it there I’ll drop it but when I do make it halfway I’ll tell myself I made it this far might as well finish the show. But this is just me

I'm a completionist, to the point of being OC about it. For one thing, a show that isn't working that well for me early on sometimes gets better and leaves me glad I kept watching. So far I've only dropped two anime. One wasn't doing much for me, and the version I had access to was so heavily Americanized that I wouldn't consider it an accurate representation of what the original creators intended. The other because if left me with such a feeling of revulsion that I couldn't continue watching (and even then at the risk of spoiling myself I tried to find out if later episodes had any change or redemption and found out it's basically more of the same).

I have never understood this mentality. If you are not enjoying something, why even bother to watch through it just so you can mark it as "completed"? You have a limited amount of time in life, so watch what you enjoy and drop what you dont. Its that simple.

I usually define "completionist" as someone who watches everything related to a certain series. As someone who tries to complete most of my anime, I usually 2x speed on things such as filler or boring content, and also I keep a schedule so I don't get bored. The reason I've seen all of Naruto is because I spaced it out in a way where I never got burnt out, and I'm doing the same with One Piece. As long as you take breaks or shorten the fat of a show via speed, then it's pretty doable!

I am an anime completionist as of October 2020, that is when I recieved a top 100 anime poster that was scratch off. I also have a pet peeve of people saying: "Oh, the anime gets good after 13 episodes- 30 episodes- 90 episodes- etc." And then feeling like I just have to *hope* that it gets good after so many episodes...

Now, don't get me wrong, I found PLENTY of anime I've ended up enjoying from powering through the bad episodes and bad arcs. I sometimes even proceed to love the anime and recommend it to people. But with completing a full anime, I have seen it's full arc, and I will be able to have conversations about the quality of an anime with a full understanding of what it has to offer and where it falls flat.

(And if you check my profile, I promise I'm getting to actually finish Black Clover, but only when I have the emotional strength to continue it again XD)

So I tend to complete any show I start. I try to balance it back and forth between shows I don't know, shows I'll know I won't love, and shows I know I might enjoy.

I have the completionist "problem" and I will put things on hold instead of dropping them. I have every intent on finishing any show I start, even if I can't stand it.

I will force myself to watch through a couple episodes at a time just to make some progress on shows I dislike. It most definitely feels like a chore at times, which is why I usually only make myself watch a couple episodes at a time.

I'm not necessarily scared to start a new show just because there is potential for me to dislike it. I'll just throw it on hold and move onto something I know I enjoy. Then when I feel like I'm in the mood to "tolerate" something, I'll make some progress with on hold shows.

I haven't completed an anime til completion since 2017 when I made this account. It is always on and off. Drops some, hold some, watch some. It's definitely a lot of mental torture trying to watch a show that I find boring or not like. So I'm like forget it.

Kudos to all the anime completionists that don't drop their anime. Much props and love. I cannot do it. But damn. The amount of sheer will power to continue is just commendable. Much respect.

I Am A Pretty Hardcore Completionist.

When I'm Trying To Power Through A Show, My Favorite Thing Is Imagining Better Versions Of What I'm Watching. You Could Also Drink, Lol.

I Have However Around A Dozen Shows I Haven't Finished. I Will Finish Them, I Just Have To Be In The Mood For A Bad Show/Movie.
Sometimes The Mood Is Creative & I Think Of How I Would 'Fix It' Or 'Remake It'. I Might Be In The Mode Where I Just Want Some Background Style Entertainment. Sometimes I Only Pay Loose Attention (If It's Just That Predictable, Slow, Or Basic). But Most Often I Think About How Awesome I Would Write It & Then Wind-Up Writing It (It's Usually Fun Even If It's Bad).

I Got A Favorite List Of Bad Shows/Movies If Your Down, Just Let Me Know.

I mean, not going Completionist about anime I don't like. The whole reason to be a completionist is for franchises you love the characters, world, writer, so much that you want all of it you can get. It's not something to try and achieve to prove a point

Ghost In the Shell
Bubblegum Crisis/Crash (an old 80s series- I have everything)
Fate / Type Moon (kind of- not the Kaleid/Prisma series)
Made in Abyss.... this is on hold on the very last episode of season 2. It goes further down an overly disgusting path that I can't agree with. So maybe I'm not a completionist on this series anymore. But I've watched everything up to that point.

I finish an anime no matter what. Lost media and hard to find titles are exceptions because I like the idea of having every anime in the database on my list.

Personally, experiencing an anime I don't enjoy isn't meaningless since it's adding to my understanding of the medium. It makes finding gems more appreciative in a way, and I believe the anime you dislike are just as important as the ones you do, if not more so. Can't get the full picture without looking at things from both sides. In terms of critiquing, it's best to know the subject inside and out, beginning to end.
