Makoto Shinkai films. Good animation doesn't help to compensate fucking awful, pretentious and repetitive writing. Not to say that Shinkai itself looks like an idiot from some things he's said.

No Game no Life- I don't appreciate cynical neet MC's.

OPM- almost the same reason as NGNL, his ennui was frustrating. Plus the jokes were not really funny (not terrible but they were on the same plane as FMA).

Your Lie in April- I really tried to like this, but it was just so slow. I just can't understand watching an anime where it's main selling is its ability to make you cry.

Clannad- Talk about much ado about nothing. The kid dies only for her to end up coming back to life. The only good character was Tomoyo.

Clannad + After story was painful to watch and not for the same "feels" reason everyone else has. I rated both a 4- 4.5

SAO, but I'm not the only one.

Nisekoi was stupid imo

And finally.... Shiina ruined Sakurasou for me.

EDIT: I see a lot of people saying 5 Centimeters Per Second. Wow I thought I was the only one who thought it was bad. xD

AOT. Saw 3 episodes. Hated absolutely everything about it. Extremely annoying whiny MC. Stupid looking giants eating people. A military lieutenant or something shouting everyone as loud as he could and feeling himself so cool because he sounded so badass. A girl eating a raw potato and feeling she was so cool for doing that. And an artstyle that looked more like a cheap DreamWorks animation movie.

I just couldn't stand it anymore.

I don't even remember anyone ever calling Fairy Tail good.

The most overrated anime/manga for me is probably Haikyuu. Aside from animation, everything in this show is boring and lacks any entertainment value. Mostly bland characters with terrible MC on top of that. It's far inferior to Hinomaru Zumou from same magazine (if we are talking about sports series that are currently being published).

For all of you saying Naruto, Fairy Tail, Sword Art Online, etc., they may qualify as anime you hate, but not as anime that "everyone seems to like." They're obviously popular, but they get just as much hate as love.

As for me, I haven't watched these popular anime simply because I'm not interested in them in the slightest (they look either boring, generic, etc.):
- Dragon Ball
- One Piece
- One Punch Man
- Cowboy Bebop
- Ghost in the Shell
- No Game, No Life
- and probably dozens more I can't recall

And I have watched and hated these high-rated anime:
- Anohana (melodramatic, boring, etc.)
- Your Lie in April (melodramatic, predictable, etc.)
- Elfen Leid (desperate, stupidly morbid, etc.)
- Kill la Kill (just plain stupid)
- Madoka Magica (desperate, emo)
- Neon Genesis Evangelion (pretentious)
- Shinsekai Yori (pretentious)

And I have watched and overall enjoyed these anime but thought they were very overrated:
- Code Geass (too many plot conveniences, plot twists, etc.)
- Kimi no Na wa (too many cliches, plot conveniences, plot holes, etc.)
- Angel Beats (rushed)

This list doesn't include any anime that were bad adaptions of their original source, such as Tokyo Ghoul (although I wasn't crazy about the manga of Tokyo Ghoul, either...).

I think the only anime that I wasn't particularly fond of that it seems like a lot of people like is Mushishi. All my friends on this site rated this anime higher than I did which probably means I just didn't understand the love for this anime.

For me, I just found it incredibly boring and mentally exhausting. It never really grabbed me or captivated me in any way. I could never really finish one episode in one sitting, I always had to press pause about half way through each episode. It did have some interesting folklore and beautiful imagery but those are the only positives I can really give this anime.

I did rank the anime a 6 out of 10 so it wasn't a complete waste of time because some good did come out of it, but I guess it didn't captivate me as much as it did other people.

Sword Art Online - offensively bad, with numerous plot holes and crappy writing and pacing. Didn't even make it through the second arc

Summer Wars - stupid plot, incredibly predictable, and unlikable characters

Angel's Egg - praised all the time for how "deep" it is, in actuality it's just random, vague religious symbolism.

Madoka Magica: Rebellion - supposedly some kind of masterpiece, it's really just a crappy, convoluted mess, with absolutely terrible writing and a sequel to something that didn't need one.

Death Note (outright pretentious and dumb, retarded and it wasn't good after the second half, first half was okay, and the finale was probably the biggest trainwreck I've ever seen and even today I still hated that fucking ending, it doesn't make it good in the end because Light its supposed to be hated, its just shit the way he died and its stupid how it was resolution wise. Outright insulting, plot holes everywhere, outright stupid second half and a trainwrecky third half and finale, I consider it my Top 3 most hated anime ever after One Punch Man)

One Punch Man (shoehorning its own joke and it attempted hard to become a parody but it made itself look retarded in the end, that's even worse than what any Shounen has done. Pretending that it's not, but it backfires so hard that it's baffling)

Planetarian (This is a more recent one, I disliked Yumemi as a character, didn't really liked it, but its far from garbage. I found it pretty average at best though because the only thing that saved the anime for me was the ending, and it was mostly story driven which didn't helped)

Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu (overly slow for its own good, the characters are as interesting as rocks, pretty much I tried to give it a shot, I tried to like it, but everything falls flat for me)

Amanchu (I prefer Aria than this because Amanchu is essentially just there, nothing really seems to grow on me but at the same time again, just like Planetarian, I think it's far from shit, it's just mediocre)

Flying Witch (another recent example, and this applies too as Planetarian and Amanchu, never got interested in it but it's far from actual shit)

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Diamond is Unbreakable (I personally hated Part 4. There was nothing that I actually liked about it aside from some of the characters, and I mean I get it that its more character focus, but for some reason, I disliked the first half, kinda enjoyed the second half, but in the end I dropped it, and I dropped the franchise in its entirety because of few people on my end that made me feel disgusted)

Psycho Pass (I didn't liked S1 that much but well, I disliked it. It was pretty much not that interesting for starters, second the system is pretty much some mess in my end, third, characters aren't really that interesting for the most part, it wasn't even remotely entertaining for me. I will not address S2 because that's mostly hated which, is deserving, but S1 is the one show that I disliked)

Ushio to Tora (not as much compared to One Punch Man but, Ushio to Tora managed to make me feel absolute hatred towards the show for some reason, I don't mind cliche shows, I don't mind stuff being generic, but this show was an absolute pain in the ass to go through)

Saiku Kusou (Probably the most unfunny short I've experienced in a long ass while for me. Comedy is a subjective term, so for me this failed so damn hard that I dropped it after a while, I won't put anyone against enjoying the show but that's my take on it)

Overlord (I hated it after a certain point in the anime which I don't remember, but damn for once I actually hated the anime, despite me not even having a hate towards LN adaptations, while it didn't made me go "ah I hate LN adaptations" It really made me not even wanting to touch the LN because of how bad it turned afterwards for me)

anime that I genuinely can not stand:

-the perfect insider [what a pretentious pile of nihilistic bullsh-t that was.]

-kannagi [claims to be a comedy, but unless you're into weird fetish jokes, I don't see how it could be labeled as one. also the characters are also intensely unlikable so there's that]

-macross delta [there seems to be two groups of people who dislike this, one that dislikes it because it is NOTHING like a macross series, and one that dislikes it because it's a genuinely poorly written mess of current anime cliches. I fit into both categories. idol girl fanbois be damned.]

-kaichou wa maid-sama - [just.. no. I heard so many good things about this one, but I can't bring myself to finish it, I've tried watching it like five times now and every time I can't get past episode 6. It's so pandering and generic in the WORST way possible. the two leads aren't even good together which disappoints me to no end.]

anime that I don't necessarily hate, but boy was it disappointing:

SAO II - [I really did enjoy the first series, even if that 2nd story arc was pretty generic. But the 2nd season was such a d r a g in the first half, and even the second half only had a handful of episodes that I liked.]

tales from earthsea - [goro miyazaki SQUANDERED parts of his fathers work, melded it with something else that didn't fit with it, and churned out a gorgeous movie that I so very BADLY want to hate but I can't because I enjoy the first half of it so much, and the source material it ripped off is one of my favorites... /sigh]

[there's obviously more, but I don't know if they're very popular/well known or not.]

For a looong time I really thought I was the only one who felt like this was a soap opera. Lmao it entertains me because it's a trainwreck but everyone else seems to think it's this masterful, deep and philosophical deconstruction of the romance genre.

Why can't we all admit it's just an excuse to watch 20 minutes of soft porn every week.

Other than this I thought Kimi no na wa was just an ok movie. I don't hate it I just...didn't feel anything while watching it lol Same with re:zero (don't @ me fanboys) and your lie in april...I've found them both painfully unengaging and i'm struggling to finish them.

Well, for me, I have to kinda reflect on the overall anime that were released in the past 20 or so years that have received a lot of popularity. Here are some anime that I hate/kind of hate for specified reasons:

Some Hayao Miyazaki movies (Omoide Poroporo, On Your Mark, Whisper of the Heart, etc.) tend to be VERY OVERATTED. I don't see what's so special about them. It's just a bunch of people living normal lives (well, mainly for the former and latter).

Tenchi Muyo! - This series is garbage. Ryoko sounds like my fucking Grandma, for Christ's sake.

Neon Genesis Evangelion - While the overall ambience of the show is great, and I still like it for it's unique approach, I cannot fathom the characters, animation (Gainax has a really shitty budget), and shitty ending. End of Evangelion changed all of that.

Revolutionary Girl Utena - On some instances, I like the show and the art, but I also really, really hate the character designs. Back when I went to school (I went to a Catholic Private school growing up), no males had long hair past their collars. Touga and Anthy's brother are guilty because one instance, they look stunning and beautiful while the other they look...off.

Cowboy Bebop - I don't particularly hate Cowboy Bebop...it's just that there's nothing to remember it of. Yeah, you have Spike, Jet, Faye, Ed, and Ein, but does anyone really remember anything from this show other than the opening/ending and characters? I don't think so.

Great Teacher Onizuka - Overrated piece of crap.

One Piece, Naruto, Bleach - The holy trinity of shounen in today's market. While I don't particularly hate some things about these three shows, I'd just wish they were fleshed out more and put more focus on characters and stories that were left out, rather than give us pointless romance and unnecessary filler. I remember back when Neji was killed after...like...what? 360 chapters of him not showing up and the first time he ACTUALLY does something, he DIES DOING IT. Way to go, Kishimoto for ruining a potentially great character. For One Piece, a lot of the emotional impacts it had on me were gone right after the Marineford arc. I remember when One Piece had a major impact on me and it's characters with arcs such as Arlong Park, Alabasta, Enies Lobby, Drum Island, etc. and seeing these characters dedicated entirely to their goals (which has rarely been seen in most shounen anime with supprting characters) just makes me tear up inside whenever I see them in their current state, after the prolonged Dressrosa arc. It's sad, so I'll stop here and maybe continue later if somebody wants to know more. As for Bleach, that's another story.

Fruits Basket - I don't get why so many people like this show. Nothing ever really happens.

ABe trio (Lain, Haibane Renmei, and Texhnolyze) - It was such a pain to finish Serial Experiments Lain and by the time I was finished, I was so confused what had actually happened. I don't think anyone found out how this show worked to this day. With the latter two shows, it suffered greatly from a lack of pacing and somewhat bad animation compared to Lain.

Fullmetal Alchemist/Brotherhood - Granted, I love Fullmetal Alchemist and the overarching storyline and everything it has and I feel said that there isn't anything like it. Though my biggest gripes stem greatly from how it presents itself. The characters themselves are especially bland, with no overall personality other than "let's find the philosopher's stone" and that's it. The comedy practically ruined Brotherhood for me because of how I couldn't even bother watching it past episode 9.

Saint Seiya - 1986 show was complete and utter shit. Hades OVA was even worse. Lost Canvas had stunning animation, but everyone looked the goddamn same and the cloths got old real quick. I also hate Alone's mullet. He'll look so much better if he had a full head of long hair.

Code Geass - Fuck this show.

Gintama - Cool action arcs and characterization. Shitty comedy.

Hellsing Ultimate - No character development or plot. Alucard is a generic Gary Stu.

I was a bit perplexed seeing NHK on the list, because I can't see any reason to hate it. It was only 26 episodes whereas the top shows have had...like...50+. Same goes for Baccano. How can you hate a show that's only 13 episodes? I know I'm contradicting myself because I have Lain which was also 13 episodes, but here's the difference. Lain was meant to be 13 episodes, not less or more and the way every episode was dealt with was extremely slow paced and a mind boggling headache. Baccano, on the other hand, was always moving and managed to hold multiple perspectives at once. It's a shame we haven't gotten a second season compared to the piece of shit Durarara.

Higurashi - Who the hell even likes watching cute girls killing each other and why the hell would this be considered horror along with Monster, for Christ's sake? They're not even on the same level.

Zero No Tsukaima - Waste of money and life.

Haruhi - It's just fucking stupid. Haruhi is a bitch.

Clannad/After Story and Kanon - On one instance, I can somewhat sympathize with the characters in Clannad. Tomoyo has a hard time with his Dad, gets angry and tries to apologize. Kotomi has a breakdown in a bus incident due to severe trauma associated with her parents' death in a plane crash. Yet, the motifs and symbols are never really any further embellished. It's all about cute girls and harems and shit. And the fantasy bullshit and designs kick it up to 11.

Dennou Coil - Now listen, I don't hate the show for anything. It's a great show. I like the plot, characters, setting, etc. but everyone LOOKS THE SAME.

Gurren Lagann - The dub is cringe worthy (seriously, SEE-MONE?) and Yoko being underaged just makes it disgusting. The mech designs are also stupid.

Darker than Black - I don't particularly hate this show. It's just boring and Hei is basically Chinese Electric Batman as the fans like to call him. What could've been a suspenseful Crime thriller just boils down to a monotonous supernatural bullshit mystery or something.

Toradora - Seriously, how the hell is this rated so highly? It's fucking garbage. Throw it out along with the rest of the trash.

Pandora Hearts - They spend one episode doing nothing but drink juice.

Cross Game - I like the art design, but nothing ever happens in this show.

Monogatari series - It's like watching an edgier version of the Wes Anderson films.

Rainbow - Misleading message in misleading show.

Angel Beats -

Steins;gate - Never really cared for this show.

Nichijou - Boring.

Madoka Magica - Cringeworthy and overly edgy.

AnoHana - What could've been a two hour movie turns into a prolonged 13 or something episode series, and it's not even that emotional.

Nurahiyon no Mago - Hagoromo is kinda cool, but the overall premise is extremely childish. Reminds me of Shaman King, but even worse.

Another - Too edgy.

Yuru Yuri -

Guilty Crown - Code Geass ripoff

Oreimo, Watamote, and other light novel trash -

Wolf Children - I'm surprised nobody brought up bestiality when watching this movie.

Psycho Pass - Just. Fucking. Stupid.

Hyouka - Bunch of school kids dick around about some lame ass club.

Magi - Fuck Aladdin. He ruined the show.

Sword Art Online - Need I say more?

A Certain Type of Railgun - Sounds cool on paper. But the results are horrendous.

Shigatsu wa kimi no uso - The lips annoy the crap out of me.

No Game, No Life - Fuck incest, fuck lolis, and fuck this game.

Noragami - Retarded show about retarded MC.

Shokugeki no Soma - Monster of the week, but with food.

Re:Zero and Erased -

Hero Academia - I don't necessarily hate this show, but I hate how people keep saying that this is better than JoJo Part IV while it clearly isn't.

Tokyo Ghoul because I don't like anime with a lot of violent and bloody stuff.

You should watch Mirai Nikki or Elfen Lied then xD

Attack on Titan. I don't see why everyone thinks it's so great- the MC is a pussy, the characters are bad, but the action was decent.
Kimi no Nawa - Don't particularly hate it, but I feel like it was way overrated. Nothing really happens until you're 3/4 of the way into the movie.
