Considering the type of site, the vote is no surprise.
While not technically anime, currently I am a big fan of Hatsune Miku.
At least I can go see her in concert.

Why isn't there a both option? I don't really like one over the other especially since I watch and have always watched both equally as much.

It's just that simple.

Im not sure if there was anime during 1960s.. Even if there was there would be no more then 5 or so.. Im sure Japan was still under construction by the after effects of WW2.. ofcourse America would have greater animation than Japan at that time..

*facepalm*

The anime industry started in the 1950's...

Try 1944 or earlier

I'm not sure when 'the industry' started but the oldest was made in, approximately, 1907.
Of course you might not count it because it was only 3 seconds long, even so the next oldest was from 1917.

*Looks at the years* Definately like 1940s and 50s. They are the most distinct?

Hey, all of you can't be American right?

ANyways, I don't want to pick. I grew up with American shows of course, but I can't say I have been watching much cartoons lately. I should, just out of curiousity. I do know that I can't stand that Spongebob theme.

Cartoons like, um, some turtle character with glasses is cute. What was his name?

Would people complain that they hate old anime because of the art/animation? I try to widen the horizons a bit and watch a little. When watching both kinds, I try to compare for an unbiased answer. Oh yeah, acting included?

I will say that I don't find much American cartoons that truimph the "genius" or compare to the feelings that I get from old OVAs/movie (and they have great music IMO) or shows like EVA and Macross.

And of course, there isn't much graphic violence in a U.S cartoon. I mean Tom and Jerry, and the Looney Tunes, would get crushed by bricks and hit by crowbars, and people consider it highly violent? In general yeah, but it's comedic in the way they do it. Doesn't bother me much. Some animations do have graphic violence.

Depends on what I am watching. As a child I will never want to forget Freakazoid, Animaniacs, Ducktales, Darkwing Duck, Chip and Dal Rescue Rangers, Chuck Jones Famous works, and many others.

Now todays Americantoons well that is just a travesty that should have been bottled up into one place to never be looked at again, ever; not even to show people what not to do on the possibility that some one would do it anyway.

But is it easy to say "Disney sucks now" or "today's cartoons suck" because we're older and we might be conservative?

or do we actually see a change in quality like...in music? Music seems to change every decade, lol.

No, it just happens that we're exposed to animation that's even better.

I have to say I hate american cartoons. I can't stand the shity drawing style, I can't stand the image of cartoons, the characters are ugly, no story, so everything is disgusting for me.

Simpsons are quite OK though.

Wow someone other than me remembers Freakazoid and animaniacs. I grew up with american carttons and anime. I used to watch DBZ, Sailor moon, reboot, tiny toons and all that. To me its what show sounds good and appeals to me.

American or anime it has gotta attract my attention.

I still love the old disney movie classics like The little mermaid, Bambi etc. But I don't like the new american cartoons (with exception of Avatar) because of their horrible animation and stupid one- episode plot with no meaning.

I've always loved anime ever since I watched Pokemonon TV as a kid and I still love anime today.

Personality.

See, here's the thing. No matter what entertainment medium there's going to be similar characters and personality traits. I think the character development is whats important. Also, Family Guy is guilty of having a character whose similar to Homer in the Simpsons, with Peter(though I like Family Guy a hell of alot more).

My point is: it isn't just anime that's guilty of reusing character traits. Every entertainment medium does, including american cartoons. I still do think anime as a whole has better characters and stories.

By the way, has anyone seen any of the more experimental cartoons that are produced in the west?

Also for cartoons, only the television shows are counted and all of the 2-D animated movies are eliminated (such as Heavy Metal, South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut, and almost all of Disnery movies).

Animation is much more highly respected in Japan while it is viewed in the US as immature and only for kids (example, my family often yells at me that I'm too old for animation). So its only natural that anime is superior then American cartoons (overall that is) since animation doesn't get that much respect in the US. The only place Western animation gets any respect is in the art circles and film buffs, but they mostly ignore the cartoons on television. As a people, Americans are unwilling to put any money into "childish" things which doesn't allow for the medium to advance. If anything really breaks the barrier, it would be Pixar. But having the cash flow also go into the television cartoons would be extremely difficult and mostly unlikely (sorry if syntax of the paragraph was very poor and the ideas disjointed).

I voted for anime, but I think American cartoons can be great, too. IMHO they are mostly made for children and for that age, sometimes, they are quite suitable. Of course there are many ones which really suck but there are many bad animes, too.
Cartoons like simpsons, tom & jerry or south park are imho just great.
The point, why anime is better is primarily the wide range, because animes are made for adults, too. Secondarily woulde be, that animes sometimes have a serious story; I don't remember any american cartoon with a real serious story.

cartoon are actually not bad.

TNMT is always a treat ^_^ one of the best cartoon if you ask me.
X-men series.
I like Dexter Laboratory quite a bit too.
Zeta Project, another one with okay plot
Batman of the future.
Tom and Jerry, true classic.

Though, I'd say anime is better, I just enjoy anime a lot more.

difference about my watching of Cartoon and Anime.

I search, download, discuss, rate and keep anime.
I didn't do any of those with cartoon.

Anyone heard of the god Ralph Bakshi?

Whom totally flagshipped amazingly smart/ culturally relevant/ and darn-right inspired animated feature films in America?!

If you want to educate yourself on how vastly different the utilization of animation between america vs. japan is, watch Fritz the Cat. An excellent watch.

'American Pop' is an interesting take on Jewish immigrancy[sic] in America. Also definitely an excellent watch.

The Last Unicorn and Flight of Dragons are among my favorites from Rankin Bass. Never a fan of their LOTR, ..whatev.

Japanese-wise, Masaaki Yuasa, creator of Kaiba and Kemonozume, is my golden calf.

if you are interested in the birth of American cartoons, going back to the turn of the LAST century, pick up a Book by Robert Maltin (Yes the Movie reviewer) called Of Mice and Magic. Was required reading for a class I took called cartoons and culture.

One of my favorites was 'Gertie the Dinosaur'. Anything that came out of the Fleischer Studios or early day AAP, WB. All classic cell animation.
