Both Vash and Nicholas D. "The Punisher" Wolfwood going off on the Sand Steamer while both Meryl and Roberto needs to head back to work and encountering his orphan companion and brother Livio on a killing spree, this is their backstory.

Livio and Nicholas's flashback, through the speechless narration, is dark, ruthless and sombre with its child-like visual art style, while the former tries to kill Vash in any way, shape or form. Nicholas being the 1st test subject to be subjected to torture from this Eye of Michael cult that's part of Million Knives's noble plan to eradicate the world from Bluesummers, and he volunteered himself in Nicholas's place for the experiment. This all accumulates in the Sand Steamer getting shifted off course, leading to the Bad Lads gang arriving onboard, and this is the Punisher's punishment: a fate that he cannot run away from.

Orange's 3DCG impressive animation never ceases to please the eye, with its fight animation.

What a masterclass episode we have here, easily the best so far of what makes Stampede stand out differently from the 90s anime.

What? He literally manhandled Livio. And he runs away so he doesn't unintentionally kill someone. This makes more sense than facing danger head-on like an idiot when you're not willing to kill the enemy.

It's a far cry from how Vash in the original series would have handled things. The original Vash was a pretty great shot, and would have found some way to effectively disarm and incapacitate Livio while also preserving the lives of those around him. He did this time and time again throughout the series. This Vash, on the other hand, spent most of the episode running away, begging others to run, or telling Wolfwood to do something. In the beginning of the episode they were on a practically empty deck and Vash even ended up getting the upper hand, only for him to fuck up and run away, putting more people in danger. At the end, he did run in to tackle Livio... which ended up being completely useless. Literally all he did was hold him down while, again, begging some soldiers to run, without even bothering to attempt to properly stop him.

It's just incredibly dissatisfying to watch, seeing how his fleeing always seems like mere self-preservation, though perhaps that's just my preconceptions of the original biasing me against this version of Vash. Who knows, maybe they might even do something interesting with his cowardice.
Imo this version of Vash is giving us a much more nuanced experience of what passivism is. In the OG he definitely does do more shooting, but in this he spends 80% of his time trying to diffuse traumatic situations. He knows, and now importantly for the audiences understanding of cowardice vs passivism, that there are only two possible outcomes: he kills his brother or his brother changes his mind.

Screaming at people, begging them to make different choices, and only using his gun to unequivocally stop other people from dying are his best hope at this point, unless he's willing to break what's left of his heart and hunt down his twin.

Every time someone stops their rampaging (Nevada) it gives him hope that love and peace can actually win, and that change is possible.

I kind of like to look at Stampede as a highlight reel of the Maximum manga in someone else’s art style. It largely skips the character writing, plotting & overall build up to get right to the climaxes. With only 12 episodes, it’s understandable. Thanks to the awesome visuals, it’s still very much worth a watch & enjoyable.

Wolfwood having a tragic, super dark backstory was not expected. Vash continues to be extremely likable, and the poor insurance folks just tryna do their jobs man... This psychic guy is cool but definitely one of the most evil characters we've been introduced to so far.

I need to know who directed this episode because WOW. Actually, I need the whole staff list. From the brilliant switch between 2D and 3D to the silent backstory to the great action, it was amazing.

Damn Nicholas backstory was (intentionally) confusing and trippy for that part, was still need to know more about all that happened but I'm curious about his "brother" now

Well, it's taking it's own shape, but I dislike how they made Livio, just hope the next episodes make him justice and also, I hope it doesn't mean well see the end of Wolfwood so soon.

This anime keeps having more and more drama, the 2D animated part was pretty neat. Man this big organization by Knives seems to have so many strings, they might be the cause of all of the problems in this place, lmao.
I like everything, ok

Another great episode. I loved how they did the backstory with the 2D and that art style. Sad backstory as well. So much going on while the sandsteamer is on a collision course with the town Wolfwood’s orphanage is in. Can’t wait until Saturday’s episode.

I’ve loved Nicholas in every adaptation and this one is no different, if anything it made me fall even moooooore in love with him. That backstory, the setup, music, scenery, everything was so beautiful, I had to watch the episode twice and might watch it a couple more times. So far, really loving this version the most but mind you, I never read the manga so, I’m sort of biased towards the anime

This was the best episode far. How they showed the past of Punisher was soo good and i also loved the psychedelic shit that was happening with him while experimenting. I also loved the action and hoe the episode ended in a chaotic not, what will happen now

Im scared now that Stampede is just going to be 12 episodes, without a second season. It really feels like the pacing is going to start to become way too fast and there won't be enough room for things to really breath and settle in the story. Say what you will about the original anime and manga having some 'filler' stuff. But I think that helped to really flesh out the world, the side characters and Vash himself.

not a great episode. the oddly-animated silent-film backstory wasn't good. the brief psychedelic scene wasn't good. both felt/were out of place

but the introduction of the bad lads gang, the blue haired gravity guy, livio, the priest/scientist guy, wolfwood's genesis story, etc were pretty solid

Really liked the storybook aesthetic for Wolfwood's backstory, the 2D animation and silent-film text screens for dialogue made it feel like there's some form of somber whimsy to this, which made the shift to the psychedelic sequence more effective. I also liked that the somber music track that played throughout flashback would extend into the present day with Livio shooting at Vash while Wolfwood watches on, kinda paints the song as representative of Wolfwood's mindset. Good mood setting.

Wolfwood's backstory in the original anime was different, but I was already vaguely aware of his manga backstory since I stumbled across it years ago, though I didn't know about Livio so it's nice that I only got the child grown up part. Solid stuff all around.

Also Legato made his debut, I've been waiting for him to show up for a while, and honestly, he might have the biggest downgrade in appearance in Stampede. Hate how he looks here.

Meryl's conclusion from the photo of Vash and the kid is something's up with Vash, that he ages slowly. Could it just be the other way around?
With Wolfwood also being a victim of the cult's experiments, he grew to be older than his friend Livio.

Jesus, this is too much to handle! My heart is in PAIN.

I knew Nicholas would have a really sad backstory but that was worse than I could’ve imagined. He gave in to those bastards and it still didn’t save his brother 😭

First actually good episode? Vash is still a pussy, but Wolfwood's backstory was surprisingly faithful to the Manga, well, until they still had to change things near the end, making him rebellious from the start until he suddenly. And I guess they merged the Bad Lads arc from OG Manga/98 with Livio's debut in Maximum.
