I can understand when people call this a potential yuri because it is an original anime with two female leads. But you non-ironically call her a potential love interest after one interaction scene in one episode?

I wouldn't doubt anything heavily, specially considering the juxtaposition between their growing intimacy and flashbacks to the pre-natal pamphlets, but sure, I meant it as a joke... you know, "and they were roommates".

They have different fathers and mothers, so I think that regardless of whether it is yuri or not, there will be no sudden Indian melodrama here. Although I agree that the story of her mother's death still looks too dark.

I know it's cuckoo, that's why I phrased it that way. Although one has to say, melodrama is a PA Works specialty, so... I guess miscarriage sibling or maybe even twin? Or probably just run of the mill "died while trying to get pregnant again".

I really like the addition of Umi-yan. The poor guy is a bit clumsy, not helped by his aching back, but he's a gentle giant and does his best to help, as well as being a great hit with the kids at the aquarium. =)

Fuuka's learning pretty fast as well, which is really nice to see. The way Kukuru and the others helped Fuuka after guests started to recognise Fuuka from her former idol career was handled effectively, too. The moments between Kukuru and Fuuka was sweet and wholesome.

However, it was only a matter of time before Fuuka's mother found out where she was, and now she's found where her daughter was staying she's decided to pay her a visit and she's definitely not amused looking at her facial expression, either. I don't blame her for being mad, but I hope she's not too harsh on Fuuka. Prepare for some family drama next time, everyone...

A scene that, between the framing, the dialogue and the nature of the physical contact, would have strong romantic overtones if it were a guy and a girl. And there's the hand clasp and hug in the OP, among other moments.

Personally, I hope they avoid yuri and just explore a budding platonic friendship, but there's no denying that there are a collection of moments by this point that would typically set up some expectations...

also that interaction towards the end just screams yuri bait lmao (or maybe even actual yuri who knows), especially the way they tried to frame it. "You'll get to know me better if you touch me" lol wtf

Are you now quite seriously comparing intimacy between people of the same gender and the opposite? Are you saying that the context and boundaries of intimacy between a guy and a girl are exactly the same as between two girls? Not to mention, none of those moments went beyond typical idealized anime female friendship. Fruit Basket had a much more intimate interaction between Tooru and her friends and all three were absolutely straight.

I find it funny how much people (myself included) want to turn this studio's anime into another Mary Okada show, lol. But kidding aside, I think the only twist that will get this show will be that we find out if its yuri after all or not. Otherwise, I don't see much room for intrigue.

That must've been hella uncomfortable for Fuuka 😬 The good thing is that she managed to overcome the first hurdle. The secret is also out thanks to the unexpected idol fanboy (seriously, didn't expect this at all from that Umi-yan fellow xD RIP his back, these children had no mercy) The bad that the end boss already appeared. Well, she gotta overcome this sooner or later anyway and with Kuku at her side she got some emotional support. I guess this bonding episode was more or less supposed to prepare us for what's to come. Quite enjoyed it down to every little moment and interaction as well. This show is just right up my alley.

One Piece episode 914 & 915 & 1027 were a mistake and 957 brought the salvation - FMmatron

Non-sexual intimacy is very important in Japanese culture and is often a sign of trust between friends. This is actually why skinship is such a thing in Asia.

I find it inconvenient that people immediately try to label any character interaction as yuri bait instead of just saying "their interaction is cute, I ship it". It seems to suggest that any deep and wholesome moments between characters exist only to attract a cheap audience to the show.

I know that is common. But if you take the context of the scene into account, the relationship between the characters, the dialogue and directing, it's pretty obvious this scene was intended as more than just "casual skinship"

If all the scenes people told me about were yuri or bl bait, then all the authors would be busy 24 hours a day only with constant teasing of the audience. People really need to learn more about such a thing as idealizing reality in fiction. Not to mention, "obviously" is a rather poor argument, as it tries to sell the subjective impression as the only one.

@Kayle_x_Morgana Have you ever watched shows like Seikon no Qwaser, Queen Blade and Ikkitousen? These shows could be lesbian porn even with formally straight characters, lol. Compared to them, the Aqutope straight is like a century old oak tree.

Joking aside, I still rate the chances of this show being yuri 50% to 50%, but I have a feeling until the moment of truth, people will perceive any appearance of these two girls on screen as an Eupho-level yuri bait.

Okay? Just replace "obvious" with "most likely" then lol

But like I said, context, dialogue and direction matter. There are other scenes even in this episode alone with skinship such as when Fuuka was running away from umi-yan or when they're riding on their scooter (or even when Kukuru literally jumps on Fuuka when they wake up), but no one bothers to label those as yuri-bait (well unless you're Yuri-Crusader that is) because there's no specific attention drawn to them, unlike that scene.

I can almost guarantee in a danjou situation that scene would've easily been used to build up romantic tension

Generally speaking, this is a good show so far, but the obviousness of certain dramatic moments - the vet going into labour last week and Fuuka getting into trouble of some sort the moment Kukuru left her alone - is kind of frustrating: I don't know if it's just that I'm too used to this type of show or if the script isn't being subtle enough in foreshadowing those moments, but it's definitely bothering me in an "of course that would happen" kind of way.

Also, I know Okinawa is quite far away from Tokyo and all, but surely they must have expected that Fuuka would be recognised as the crowds start to pour into the aquarium for events like the touch pool? To be fair, though, the foreshadowing for her cover being blown at all was a little more subtle with how we were shown Umi-yan finding out about it first.

That aside, Kukuru and Fuuka are continuing to get closer, though whether that'll go as people hope is another question entirely. We also got a quick reminder that Kukuru is perhaps aware that her mother died while pregnant, though besides fleshing out Kukuru I'm not 100% sure where that subplot is going. I'm also surprised Fuuka's mother showed up to Okinawa so soon and by the looks of it she's not at all happy with the situation. So I guess next week we'll be getting the drama where she tries to bring Fuuka home, rather than that being held off until the final few episodes as I expected.

Dude, yuri bait isn't any "oh, Western viewers can read this as gay". Yuri bait is a certain homoerotic subtext or fan service that literally takes you by the neck and requires you to pay attention to it. You can also use idealized bonding moments between characters for shipping, but calling it yuri bait is like calling the Tom and Jerry a brutal action movie. Perhaps Americans have forgotten that shows can describe purely idealized friendships, but the Japanese actually do this quite often, seeing shipping as a side benefit.

Honestly I have no idea where the plot is going at this point but I love the visuals so I'm here for it.
Visuals so pretty, I can put half of them as my wallpaper, WHERE THE 4K60 RELEASE PA WORKS.

Also mommy is here, let's fucking go, let's get this plot Fuuka's mom, start moving it. Amen.

We really do be arguing whether this anime yuri or not every fucking week because RobertBobert can't let mfs call an anime yuri, jesus fuck. Just let people call the anime they watch yuri, it affect nobody, I genuinely find your constant arguments annoying because I can't see what replies are talking about the episode and what replies are just you being a triggered snowflake because some person on MAL called an anime yuri. Let it go my guy, for real for real.

EDIT: Deleted my reply after this one because the man didn't understand what I was trying to say, you can see what I said in #47, he has it quoted. But I do not want to add to the spam.

You can't tell the difference between "ha, they're close to each other, that's yuri bait!" and "hmm, they are close to each other, maybe it will be yuri"? Seriously dude. You are clearly not the 13-year-old Twitter girl who thinks questioning her headcanon means banning her from shipping.

m8 idk what kind of mental gymnastics you're trying to play to avoid what I'm trying to say lmao

I think you're taking it to the very extremes. Yuri/yaoi bait is exactly as the name implies, specifically directed romantic yuri/yaoi moments that are dismissed as "they're just friends" or the such. It doesn't autmatically need to be homoerotic for it to be leading to something it's not. I mean, how can you really not consider "Fuuka taking Kukuru's hand causing her to become flustered, as she presses it against the side of her head akin to that as lovers would do" as not "fanservice" lol. That's some pure Sappho and her friend type shit

Perhaps Americans have forgotten that shows can describe purely idealized friendships, but the Japanese actually do this quite often, seeing shipping as a side benefit.

idk when I suddenly became American but anywho. As I've been literally trying to say this entire time context, dialogue and direction matter (let me know if that makes things easier to read). You can absolutely have shows that describe idealized friendships like Gakuen Babysitters for instance, but hardly anyone accuses that of yuri/yaoi bait (well except for 1 character but I digress) because the way it's directed doesn't really lend itself to those kinds of assumptions to be made.

Dude, that's exactly what I'm telling you. You take a Japanese cartoon with a rather classic idealized Japanese friendship and say "this does not correspond to how people in the West behave in reality, so this is ....". You spend too much energy and especially time to simply repeat your thesis in other words. I don't see much context or direction here to consider this "obviously yuri bait". What's next?

And I will surprise you, among a certain audience, Gakuen Babysitters is considered insanely gay, to the extent that people find a gay context even among girls who are canonically in love with male MCs.

All of everyone you are talking about now, are they here with us now?

Lol, now you decided to whine how tired of arguing with me instead of trying to get my attention in any way you like as a crushed teenage boy? Oh, and I already started to think that I am popular.

Their absence in this conversation, bar 1 or 2 people, is evidence that they do not care about what you have to say.

I'm just going to mute you and move on, like I should've done in the first place. But I entertained your delusions for some reason, and I feel really dumb for that

JUST DO IT. You spend too much time to show how much you don't care about me, and it's kind of funny.

Umi-yan was mentioned before sitting at home due to a back problem, but this time we got the proper introduction. Honestly felt like he was some kind of burglar when Fuuka discovered him in that tiny dark room. Can't blame her for freaking out though. What I didn't expect was him to be obsessed with Idols and instantly recognizing who Fuuka really is and well, word spread quickly afterwards.

I do appreciate the bonding between Fuuka and Kukuru again this week. As more truth about Fuuka is coming into the light, I can only expect them to become better friends after discovering more about each other. Fuuka really seems to get into working for the Aquarium, good on her!!!

Having a fellow employee recognized you is not a big deal, but when customers do and start a commotion (like taking non-consensual photos), that's when things go bad and I think that is the whole reason why Fuuka's mom discovered that she is working at Gamagama Aquarium. She looks incredibly displeased....

Welp, Fuuka's mom appeared outta nowhere...and now she has to answer for her lies. The PTSD from HigeHiro wanes...
I wanted to forget it, but when I saw that displeased face of Fuuka's mom, I already imagined the slap that might follow, let's hope I am wrong on that XD

I love the relationship between Kukuru and Fuuka, those girls are just adorable. And Fuuka did a good job confronting her past.
The interactive pool was nice, Gama Gama aquarium has to be recognized by everyone.

Wait until Fuuka's mom slapped her. Or scolding her.

Actually, it's good solution since she tried hard to overcome her past, since used to be an idol.

Also, I want to know more about Gama gama recently. Including a lot of fish that i didn't know and how to keep/breed it

The yuri shippers are going to have a field day with this one... And I can't really blame them.

Either we'll get a romantic relationship or it'll be a hell of a bait-and-switch.

In Japan it is perfectly normal for people to touch eachother in non-sexual manner in order to build trust or bond.
Because, you know... Unlike like on the west, you don't have to worry that you'll be accused of sexual assault by someone vindictive.

I've already tried to tell people about the importance of trust and non-sexual intimacy in Japanese relationships, but I've been accused of attacking anyone who says something about yuri, lol. Also, with exactly the same gesture, Natsumi's grandmother calmed a female ghost in one of the flashbacks.

I literally said that I think that this question should still be answered in the future, or that personally I give it a 50 to 50% probability, but if I say that this is not yuri bait, then I forbid people to ship it. I bet that if in the future this show really turns out to be yuri, then all these people will point their fingers at me, pretending that I was screaming that they are all absolutely straight.

Author never did anything yuri in the past, so I honestly doubt we'll get more than just a bait. Since this is anime original, we don't know for sure and feel free to ship.

Easily. I don't see anything wrong with someone ship them and I even deliberately ignored such comments. But when people literally take every wholesome bonding moment and say "huh, yuri bait", it seems disrespectful to the authors for me.

Can you show me a platonic example of two same-sex anime characters or Japanese people touching each other on the cheek while saying "You might understand me better if you touch me"?

Again, I (still) really hope this doesn't go yuri, but I have to admit any regular person would find it difficult not having expectations of romance between the two leads after the scene today.
Away from the things of man, my love, away from the things of man.

Wait, I'll go look for an example like right now. Like... Seriously?

Maybe the existence and popularity of public bathouses in Japan would suffice?
Also, the female characters checking out their boobies is the most clichéd scene and necessary part of every hot spring episode.

Also this because yes, it was equivalent of a handshake.

Also this, lirerally from the same studio and VERY similar show in general in premise. (Hanasaku Iroha) Main girl with curly hair has male love interest.

The original LN of Kamikaze Girls features a scene where one of the girls is leaning on the back of the other and compares it to trust between lovers. And yes, both are straight, in the sequel one of them has a male love interest. The Japanese are generally very fond of a near-romantic tone in platonic things, have you ever heard of the Class S?

Again, Japanese culture places a very heavy emphasis on skinship and trust in platonic relationships, emphasizing that ideal friendships are like a platonic romance. Of course, this does not mean that Aquatope will not be a yuri, but this scene is still far from bait.
