Man, this was a good episode. Besides the theme of science & knowledge overcoming religious fears, we also get a look at Shandora, the city of gold, and then there's the mysterious twist with Noland and Calgara becoming enemies.
I'm really liking this little mini backstory arc, it's a nice change of pace.

I guess the problem is that he refused to marry the girl which might be an insult in the culture of Shandians...

Cute snake, wonder if it grew up to be the one that swallowed Luffy and all?

Clearly something sinister is happening in the background for the locals to suddenly despise Noland and co. Looking forward to finding out who and why.

Did anybody notice how easy norland cut that giant python? While Zoro and Wiper only leave a scratch when fighting it! Lol

The Shandians are so insufferable >_> These people just saved your whole dam village from getting wiped out by an epidemic and now you're treating them like shit for something they don't even know what they did wrong. Bunch of drama queens if you ask me.

One Piece does backstories masterfully. These backstory episodes have been some of my favorites in all of Skypiea, perhaps they'll end up as my favorite in the arc as it finishes up next episode.

We've gotten to understand the forgotten history of both Noland and the Shandians, as well as a little story about the snake. The themes of a battle over tradition and reasoning overcoming the fear of God being done with Calgara in tears rejecting his commandments for God, risking losing himself and his family by angering God, that's powerful and I love the duo. Noland is quite the legend himself, he's a great person and history has forgotten who he was, and instead set him up as an unapologetic liar for new generations to know what not to be. Brutal.

I think there's a parallel in both the forgotten history of Noland and Shandora being continued by people who don't fully understand it for respect of their ancestors, that being Mont Blanc preserving Noland's memory in his own way, and Wyper and the other Shandians fighting for Calgara's memory as well. I also strongly think there is a parallel in the fact that Shandora presumably stopped sacrifices from occurring and prevented their fear of God controlling them so long before Enel came to deem himself as a God of fear and again demand sacrifices, even using their sacrificial altar. Is Enel just as fake of a God as the Shandians sun god was? I think so. Either way the themes of sacrifice I noticed early on are coming back through, I'm getting the message that "life trumps all, even fear of God" personally. It's fascinating how everything is coming together. There may be one of history repeating itself in here too.

Noland and Calagara's amazing history that has long been warped by time made me think about all the amazing people and their stories that have been forgotten in real life. I suppose all we can hope for is to impact those around us and live through them as time goes on, similar to Hiriluk and Chopper. :) Seriously, this backstory arc is really touching.

Lastly, I want to touch on how the snake was characterized. Oda is amazing! I've never cared about animals in any facet of life like I have with One Piece animals. The grandpa and father were taken out but the baby found its homeland with Shandora and the bell, and it grew up and lost it's home, only to finally find it again along with Wyper- it had tears in its eyes, and Enel shocked it to oblivion. I suppose to keep with the themes of remembering history and living for our ancestors we'll get another baby snake coming through to grow up and live like it's fallen father. That's my prediction and if I'm right, it will be a great way to push the theme of living for your ancestors and fallen friends in a cute and heart warming way.

This backstory arc has really made me change my view on Skypiea. Bellamy's fight and what came before it with Montblanc and the monkey bros was awesome. However I've found Skypiea lacking, and it certainly is, yet the themes attached to it are some of the most meaningful and well done I think I've seen in One Piece thus far... It may not be one of my favorite arcs since themes cannot carry story, but it certainly proven itself to have a special place in my heart and to be an important One Piece arc in itself.

Seeing Noland convince Calgara that he has the cure to the plague that's been killing his people sure was intense! Their deep friendship with each other, the Shandians' hospitality, and the Lvneel Explorers' gifts of produce in addition to the help they've given to cure the plague were all touching moments for me.

Seeing the Golden City with its plating intact, the Golden Bell, and even the snake that ate Luffy was really cool.

I wonder what Noland did to piss off all of them again...

I love this backstory of Noland and Calgara. A few important questions have been answered.

I also agree, fight wise this is one of the worst arc’s in One Piece. But story wise it is the best yet in my opinion :)

I am really enjoying these flashbacks more than I thought. I was thinking how wholesome Calgara and Nolan friendship was so wholesome. Then the ending. I wonder what happen. I hope it’s just a miss understanding

Man these past episodes have been very good so we’ve finally got some answers regarding the Shandians with Kalgara and Noland. Their friendship seemed generally very real, like they were thick as thieves and laughing a lot from what I could see initially. But now at the very end? The Shandians have now gotten bitter over Noland and his crew.

I really hope that this is all some misunderstanding because it’s quite obvious that Noland and co don’t know why the Shandians are being bitter towards them. Hopefully we’ll get the reason why in the last flashback episode they are like this. So for now this is pretty good learning about their history in general. Pretty interesting stuff.
