I wasn't expecting my heart to break into pieces when I started watching the film.

Such a beautiful and heartbreaking story, that hits too close to home and I only recently learned that it was inspired by the heartbreaking Kyoto animation incident. I will absolutely recommend this story to anybody who has seen or heard of Kyoto’s animation work.

An interesting representation of the social and time cost of creation and of the obsession for it (despite renunciations and even in an imaginary diversion, the characters would ultimately embrace an artistic path), with time repeatedly slipping out of the medium length film (through too many work montages, as if ellipses were forbidden). Marred by an awkward attempt at emotion/shock and by a somewhat immature look at the impulse behind narrative creation (rewrite your life?) and its requirement.

The sketchy aspect of the characters looked good to me, the contrast with the realistic backgrounds less so. But it kinda displays the same complementarity both characters appear to have and there's a certain "raw" energy that comes out of it.

Score: 6,5/10
Enjoyment: 3/5

The one thing I like about this piece is that it doesn't try to take on a unique, complex, or mind blowing plot. That's right, the best thing about this show is that it is "simple" yet beautiful.

I couldn't believe such story was made by the guy who made CSM and Fire Punch.

This is probably the shortest anime I've watched in terms of length and how shocking it is that it's by far better than most shows with longer duration.

After watching this, I am really tempted to read "Goodbye Eri", but I'd rather wait for the anime to get a better experience.

Also this studio did a fantastic job, so I'm curious what they will do next.

This was an absolute masterclass in terms of Cinema, When I read the manga I didn't enjoy it as much but this adaptation completely blew me away. It hit me like a truck.

Hats off to the people who worked on this, Hopefully we get a Goodnight Eri adaptation too sometime soon.

The message I got was that, It's not the work itself but rather the people that you work with or do something with that make something memorable. Value them and let them know before it's too late!

9/10 👏👏👏

Definitely hit me in the feels in a major way. Instant 5/5 for me. I wish we had films/series like this every year. The shortness reminded me of Shinkai's The Garden of Words(was only 48 minutes long). It's quality, not quantity that counts.

Very good show. Can't really decide if Manga was better.

Feels bad for the girl. Makes my blood boil. You're struggling with life, have your own hopes and dream, maybe life's starting to get better and then suddenly some lunatic ends your life, just like that. Worst of all, her death was likely slow and painful, which makes me rage more.

It's sad and infuriating. At least our MC didn't lose hope and moves on.

Okay....

So at the end of the day does this mean Kyomoto is just a concept or what
Cause she might as well be an inanimate plushie the way her personality and narrative got portrayed.

Also Fujino only felt regret for inspiring Kyomoto to come out of her shell, & not the nasty things she's been casually saying to her over the years?
Because that's what led to her early death? Really??
Interesting take.

All in all, decent watch. 7/10.

Couple of things most people probably noticed but:
1) FUJIno + kyoMOTO = FUJIMOTO
2) In my interpretation, Kyomoto did die and the alternate reality is all happening in Fujino’s mind. It seemed to me as if the “Look back” 4-Koma was drawn in Fujino’s style, not Kyomoto’s. I saw it as her channeling her grief into manga. Plus, even though it’s played out in a comedic way, it does say “I wish I was there to save you and take the hit for you” when seen from Fujino’s perspective. The fact that this resembles KyoAni’s incident made me think that maybe Fujimoto had a friend there (I have zero evidence), as this seems like such a self referencing work.
3) I think that the 4-Koma Fujino sticks on her window at the end is a way of reminding herself why she does what she does. When Kyomoto asks her why she draws we see multiple flashbacks of them working and having fun together. The comic strip is what brought them together.

I usually suck at reading between the lines but I like giving it a shot.

Absolute cinema, beyond the expectation
Im a huge fan of Tatsuki Fujimoto and I have read all of his mangas, except this Fire Punch one. I dont know why, cause my fr recommended me not to read this manga cause its too pervert and sexual violence???. I really need some review from yall about this one. Cause it wouldn`t be fair to ignore one of Tatsuki's works.

Have you ever just looked back on life and wondered how things could have turned differently? Have you ever pondered on your previous actions as well as your trajectory to see what lead to things to be the way they are? Have you ever just...?

This is a very reflective movie. It shows us in quite the artistic portrayal the story of 2 girls whose path got intertwined for better or for worse with a bond based on pride, admiration, loyalty, envy and overall heartfelt emotion. You can quite clearly see that even if they don't say it, even if their conciusness would betray them, even if they fear prejudice or embarrasment. But it is exactly that what drives them forward towards improvement, to make decisions and to suffer what fate got in store for them. Life can sometimes me cruel, unjust, out to get us when we least expect it and what we can't explain the motives we either blame a third party or take it to ourselves. That sucks, it really does and it is human to do so. This is what these characters are, even those featured for a few scenes to drive the plot forward, they are humans and the way they are written is nothing short of commendable.

That is the highlight of the movie for me and with that I'm not diminishing the rest of it in the least. Just as the presentation overall drives the sentiments home with a consistent art style choice and different camera angles depending on the circumstances, the music tracks chosen for each section are just right each and every time. Be that on the credits, the presentation or during a flashback, they are never out of place and they can set the scene just right. As a result, an already acclaimed one-shot can be adapted in the way it deserved to.

Just to be cautious I'm not giving it a perfect score. There are some details regarding the overall narrative and the fantastical and fictional side of things I'd like to meditate over. Either way, that's probably more nitpicking at this point so suffice to say, this is some good shit.

Look back is an apt title as it really shows you shouldn't regret your past nor should you not learn from it.
The alternate reality we saw of how she never would've met Kyomoto and maybe saved her life is a perfect example of living in regret rather than looking back at all the great times they had together.
Kyomoto also decided on her own to not live in Fujino's shadow but to be her own self, Fujino got her over her first hurdle but to continue she had to do what she felt she needed to do.

I like how it shows that someone like Fujino thinking she's less skilled than Kyomoto learned it's not just about a perfect picture but rather what it portrays.
What a beautiful movie though, a small contained story told in just under an hour and done so pretty much perfectly.

I had little idea what this movie was about, what it was based on, just seen some slight info that it's about young girls and their interest in drawing manga, so wasn't expecting the heart wrenching turn it takes. Wonderful story and characters though, gorgeous animation and art, I wasn't planning on really focusing on the movie initially, just needed something to casually watch to the side, but had to focus on it because of how good it was.

It was funny seeing the Chainsaw Man nods in this, because I thought they were just little bonuses thrown in for fun, just to find out this was an adaptation of a manga the writer of Chainsaw Man did and the director worked on the anime for Chainsaw Man also lol Can't say if this is a good adaptation, but on its own, I really enjoyed it.

The best movie i have seen in a while, and it's only an hour. Proof that sometimes minus is more. It doesn't look like a work from Fujimoto, then you see the end, and yes it is a work from him. Hapiness is forbidden in Fujimoto's world.

I had a lot of people talking about Look Back when it came out and seeing that it was Amazon Prime I figured why not I should try this film out myself. And much to my surprise it was actually a pretty stunning piece of work here. It was a relatable story about two girls who were once rivals because they both did mangas in the school paper but ultimately ended up being the best of friends and ended up pursuing the careers in the manga industry. Because this was based on a piece by the same Mangaka who did Chainsaw Man it’s only fitting that there would be references to that anime/manga in the movie albeit under the name of Shark Kick and there were apparently a couple of references to Goodbye Eri which everybody seems to be glamouring for an anime adaptation and I will say when you get to the credits you’ll probably gonna get choked up upon hearing the song as well as seeing that last shot as well.

Kind of a shame I didn’t see it in cinemas but regardless it was so brilliant of a work. The art style was incredible to look, the voice acting for Fujino and Kyomoto were fantastic, the music was beautiful to listen to, even if it was rather loud in places and really helped build on the atmosphere of each scene altogether. And now after seeing it I kind of want to read Look Back, the manga that is. The only thing I have to quibble with is the running time was only about an hour or so but I don’t think it really detracts from the overall presentation here and it’s certainly an incredible piece. Equally heartwarming and equally sad in a lot of areas, I’ll give Look Back a 9/10.

It was okay, but in some parts I felt they took more than necessary; like the panels of the girls together almost at the end of the movie. But in general, it was a good movie with a great story, and damm, the scenes were so damn well-done. 8 out of 10.

It was good. I feel the death would've hit me harder if we had a little more time to flesh out their relationship, I didn't cry like a lot of people seemed to. I like how realistic the portrayal of death was though. Fujino grieved, then it after that it was right back to work, just like how it is in real life. Overall the art and animation were the standout, I just love Fujimoto's character designs. 8/10

Tears in my eyes :'( that was sadder than I expected... RIP Kyoumoto, the story really reminds me of what happened to KyoAni in 2019 so this is even sadder, what a beautiful short movie, Fujimoto is so talented when he can write a sad and realistic story like that while also writing works like CSM and Fire Punch
