Well. It wasn't bad, but it also wasn't good. Felt average I guess. The art and scenery is pretty though. I hope the MC doesn't narrate as much as he did in this episode for future episodes. Love Ono Yuuki and all, but the narrating is boring me.

I think I may need another episode before I have a full fledged opinion.

Good lord that was hard to watch. This guy is such a dorky white knight.
>The protagonist has a Tumblr self-insert fanfiction name.
Of course he does.
-Okay, so, he's the blonde girl's instructor. We this dumb bitch almost got herself killed, so I guess she desperately needs one.
-I liked the Lacanthropes being designed as pumpkin-heads. They chose a good month to start airing this!
>"If you cut my hair, I won't be able to recall my mother!"
Assassins Pride, please quit making me roll my eyes.
-So why does he decide not to kill her? He's an Assassin. He gets paid to kill. He found out she wasn't legitimate. How is this guy an Assassin? This can't be the first person he's felt bad for.
Also

HAHAHA! That can't be intentional!
I have no idea why this score is above 7. I can tell this is gonna be a bad one. This protagonist is what nerds think they look like when they try to be overly-chivalrous. Everything about this was hard to watch. This is definitely aimed at teenage girls.

I disagree. It's trying hard to be mature. It's trying hard to be dark. Besides, mature/dark does not equal good. This is extremely self-insert fanfiction tier so far.
Besides, you're assuming everyone here is watching every anime this season. Isekais get high scores because most people who watch them are Isekai fans. Same with moe trash. This was an anime that had an interesting summary. That's why I personally picked it up. It was extremely disappointing to me. I'm surprised it has an average score above 7.

I really liked that scene where Kufa offered his hand but Melida didn't take it. I hope we see her get more physically powerful even without having mana. Melida's design is also cute, and the ending was really beautiful! i am curious if this will turn out to be a romance anime though. Seems like Kufa is a lot older than Melida so it is a bit weird, but we'll see ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

A plot simple, but difficult for our protagonist, Kufar, which by the way, is a badass and a gentleman, my respects. Basically, he set aside the mission because he saw a great willpower in Melida and decided to save it (grant prana and hide the truth), but if they discover it, they both die. I don't know if the decision he made was for pride, foolishness, for love, or for simple mercy. Anyway, he's a murderer and that won't change.
The world in which the story unfolds seemed very peculiar to me, it is incredible that they live in large lamps that house large ones, besides there are monsters. On the other hand, the animation is really spectacular in the action scenes. Definitely, this anime goes to the list. I hope it don't disappoint me, it was one of the most anticipated this season.

Ps: If everything was resolved with a kiss, hahaha.

I quite enjoy the manga but the first episode was a letdown in comparision to it ... Seems they glossed over / cut so much just to be able to end on the mana transplant which made is too rushed and generic...

Hope they pick some stuff back up next episode so the characters don't feel so bland, especially Kufa who at this point hasn't been shown what he is (f.ex. the fight shown in flashback was toned down, he's a badass assasin for f sake ... ) or what his motivation was/is for helping Melida instead of assasinating her...

This would've worked way better as a double opener

just hoping the next episode will give more impact for this anime, i quite enjoy the romance series beetween melida and kuufa, especially when melida try to get stronger with kuufa lesson and else. I can see her effort so much. She maybe weak at first but later she will show what already she got at tournament. Can't wait for that scene to be animated.

For a first episode it was ok I guess, I don't think you should judge a whole show purely off the first episode.
Animation was really good, I liked the fight scene at the start. Kinda wish they explained more of the story and what was happening in the first episode but I guess that is what will make me come back for more episodes.
I just hope it gets better and we get more of an understanding for everything in coming episodes otherwise I am going to be too confused to keep watching it

As a reader of the manga, mixed feelings.

They omitted a lot of information and scenes - scenes that developed Melida's character heavily differed from of how they portrayed her in the anime; at least in the first episode.

Considering this episode ran through 5 chapters which is around 150~ pages, ugh. I'm rather indifferent with the episode, though obviously with hindsight, I already know how the manga ran it, so it's a bias. The animation exceeded my expectations from this new studio, the pacing of the story did not.
(Gosh, that "kiss" scene had NO context. I rushed to click my right arrow key just to skip it.)

Accidentally stumbling across the PV of the second episode, it seems like it's rushing through a fair amount of chapters as well. I dearly hope it at least fixes what has been unanswered and underdeveloped in the first episode properly.

Everything is lacking in this anime: the history, the story, the characters' personalities, everything. This is only the first episode so I'll give it a couple more to see if they can start building everything now that the weak premise has been set, but I don't see this being a show worth spending time on.

>it's not trying too hard, it's literally a seinen, it's for mature audiences.
Just because it's aimed at mature audiences doesn't mean it does a good job at being mature. Shonens are technically aimed at immature audiences, but I've seen a lot of Shonens that have done maturity better than this. Having a mature demographic doesn't equal maturity.
Look at the context. I'm not debating whether the subject in the show was mature or not, what I mean is it wasn't doing a good job at being mature.
>I will get upset because this site's rating scale is bullshit, this should have an 8 easily.
Based on what?
You can go the the anime's page and view it's stats.
As of the time I am writing this reply, 61.7% of the people who have been watching this anime have given it below an 8. On what basis does it deserve an 8? And how is this the fault of this website's rating system?

To be completely fair, history is usually something that is dealt with in later episodes unless it is absolutely need-to-know for the plot. But besides that, this one is definitely worst of the season so far IMO. I'm personally gonna keep watching though. I guess I'm a masochist or something.

I really like Kufa and Melisa. Kufa has a chance at being my favorite guy of the season. The ending song was great imo.

Did feel pretty rushed with a lot of stuff crammed into the episode without discussing how or why.

I didn't understood the ending of episode. How did he “Awaken” her mana? Was it his mana and he just cheated?

Should have got an eng simuldub, weird omission considering its really good. Best assassin in anime, best Black Swordsman since our favorite is presently out of commission. Still love em both to deaths.

Kissing milady's hand and pledging himself to her was a bit too much though, unnecessary and pointless writing.

Right from the get-go this was reminding me of Tegami Bachi (Letter Bee) in it's setting. This sort of victorian gothic sunless world. It's very interesting setting with an immersive feel.

The cinematography and presentation of setting and atmosphere, as well as setting the stage for each scene and new characters is quite commendable, especially with this being in the vein of a lot of 'typical' LN adaptions etc. I always love when i see an anime taking some familiar ideas but selling it in a new or better way that feels like a breath of fresh air. I hope this can at least continue to be good throughout and settle itself as a memorable little show in the sense that SukaSuka was for instance.

The progression was a little quick, escalating to the girl's problem, conflict and resolution within the single episode. He shared some kind of potion with her... The way it transitioned into the credits was really neat, as it's not every day you see an actual psychedelic trip woven into narrative context in a realistic and sensible way, and with such a sense of artistic impact. The people producing this anime are putting a lot of love into this production, and i highly respect that.

This is a really good series

I was looking forward to it when I read the manga (tho only the first few chapters)

Pretty much as about the Heroine trying to overcome bunch of stuff. The series has quite a bit of dramas in it.

And the male MC is interesting too, especially since he has his own stuff to overcome while growing his waifu... I mean his student.

They threw the biggest part of the plot out of the window just to have a fancy fight and a plain hero and dumb loli char as mcs

I really looked forward to this but holy moly i got disappointed.

This anime (so far) is good.

Fixed it for you; you're welcome. Also my IQ is below 40 :p

Someone with "an I.Q. below 40" wouldn't even be able to use the internet and type...so the stupid one is you.

What's so "bad" about this anime? Are you mad because they didn't do panty shots or something?

there are really some exaggerated people in the anime community. It has only been one episode, but they are already calling it a trash. I'm so glad for this opportunity to be amongst specialists. I wish I had this clairvoyance ability to call an entire season a trash based on one episode alone. The Nanatsu no Taizai is another example of it: people keep being annoying because the "animation got worse" supposedly. And after all that, all they call talk about is how Kimetsu no Yaiba is amazing because of the animation alone. All they care about is the animation...

I liked it more than I expected but I'm not a fan of the final part of the episode. The change of mentality of the MC was kind of weird and that last interaction with Melida was too corny for my body... "My Little Lady"... :P

Not to mention how according to the MC itself, those scarecrows were of the lowest rank but nevertheless decides to kill the only one remaining, after having killed the others normally, using a skill. lol

Other than that, it looks good and the setting is interesting. I really like the idea of the world in the form of a "chandelier", I think it looks pretty cool.

...And the name of one of the maids is Nietzsche. xD

I'm pleasantly surprised by the first episode, the art/animation was absolutely on point, damn!
Let's see how this will go.
"There is no such thing as an Anime elitist. You watch Anime, therefore, you are trash by society's standards."

Starts with action... style looks... unimpressive.

Now infodump... I get the feeling I will drop this... (continues)

... blonde loli... concerned about her undies being seen... falls... hero catches her...
not cliche at all....

... skimms the rest of the episode... nope
7 minutes in... dropped
0.5/5
Echo wat someone Said tbh it the truth

So this just looks generic, bland and kinda boring. Ill give it my standard 3 episodes before i choose to drop it or not. Melida looks cute but still generic and bland. The World could be interesting. I guess we will wait and see.

Vampir was suppose to kill Melinda right, so what change his mind?????

If I understood this episode, it was her determination to show own worth. Something like "I prefer to die than accept that I am weak/worthless".

But didn't he said that he wants to execute her faster so she doesn't need to suffer? For me, this part was straight bullshit made to push plot into this romance-kind of relationship. Maybe they give propper reason later.

it's not trying too hard, it's literally a seinen, it's for mature audiences. this is a great series. Most people here are watching isekai this season. I will get upset because this site's rating scale is bullshit, this should have an 8 easily.

Iv saw around 70 seinen anime, so I think that makes me enough competent to rate this anime in seinen scale. And to be honest i would not even call this anime seinen. More like dark shoujo with psychological elements(bullying and stuff) and my rating would be 7/10 if I didn't watch last 5 to 6 minutes. But now I m not giving it more than 4/10 due to last few minutes were so irrational, like he really had no reason to change his mind.(at least in 1st ep, I have no clue ab novel and manga)

It was only the introductory episode, but there wasn't much to grab my interest. I'll stick around to see if anything does, but I'm not expecting it.

It was an okay start.

The characters are the norm for the story, but are characterized well enough: the underdog outcast who keeps a hope and a smile and the coldblooded assassin who feels for her and becomes her ally.

The world of Flandore looks very interesting.

Expected a usual battle harem, but the directing & detailed gestures is very particular. I like how the main pair is presented in contrasting ways. Melida has the silent gestures, shifty eyes to show her insecure, maybe shy mind, like carefully placing her bag down, while trying to act strong like refusing help from Kirito or not acknowledging the maid's concern. Kirito as the calm edgelord, mostly presented by calm confident monologues.
But it's hilarious Vampir secretly betrayed his White Night guild by becoming a whitenight for his lady.
Candelabra city, romantic petals & pumpkinman bullying? It's more like a dramatized stage play.
All these weird names, and hello Nietzsche.
Cool actions, but they haven't explained what group he fought against. Still I hope more shoujo side than the battle shounen parts.
