She was wearing girly clothes and is fine with girly clothes, I lean her to be a girl but they probably wont say for drama and comedic uses or something. She's probably a rare form of a tomboy. Also most traps have a certain type of sound in their voice ya know, if you're a hentai artist do whatever you want ;D

Seeing as Aku says boku (male variant of I in Japanese), I'm pretty sure he's a boy. Women sometimes use it as well but they are usually more tomboy-ish, and the character design is all frilly girly, so I still think he's a boy

I'm just super happy with the fact that the main character is voiced by Tsuda Kenjirou <33

not really... i some case girly girls will use boku.. its not only for tomboish girls... its like the use of -kun- its for males but there are people who put put kun for girls even pempered girls.... one example is in fruits basket- they add kun to the female lead and call her tohru-kun instead of chan. it has nothing to do with how girly/ tomboish the person is XD is something in their culture and language

That's true. Except they use the suffix -kun for women so that it sounds less cute and more respectful, especially in work-related situations. It says more about the one speaking than the one being spoken of. :) For example, if a male superior at work keeps calling a female subordinate -chan, that could be taken as a subtle (not so subtle) way of emphasizing she's a woman, and if they aren't on good terms it can be seen as a form of making her feel less than. Using -san is still the usual way to speak to someone else in a polite manner but in some cases, when the speaker chooses to do it, they will use -kun for a woman.

Japanese is a really gendered language and this presents some problems on multiple levels. When talking about boku, even though in recent years some Japanese women have started using the traditionally male pronoun to refer to themselves and it's slowly getting more accepted, it can still sound a bit off. Even more so if they use ore, and espcially to native speakers.

In anime culture there's a trope called bokukko, meaning a girl who uses boku to refer to herself. Even though this doesn't always mean she's tomboyish this is however usually the case. Aku looks like a young girl, being frail and cute and by wearing cute girly clothes. Also acts like one, being very timid and blushing quickly, etc. BUT, uses boku. This is done so the audience doesn't know their gender for sure, even though the situation usually ends up being ''boyish girl'' or ''girlish boy''. Girls would then be seen as tomboys, not necessarily because they look like boys but because they behave like ones and use male pronouns. Therefore a girly girl can be girly girly, but when she uses boku a lot of people will still feel she's tomboyish. As Aku doesn't act like a boy, at least boyish in the way of traditionally more rambunctious, I think Aku is a girlish boy. Even if just to surprise the audience.

I could be wrong though.

And that, folks, concludes my essay.

(Sorry for the more formal speech. I've been proof-reading a Master's thesis for three days straight, so casual English sounds wrong at the moment @__@)

Well I'm sticking with girl it doesn't really matter, I have a feeling the writer just wanted some drama to laugh at. Maybe you're right but here's a question does Aku ever write her name or do we just hear it? Does her name only get spoken or has it ever been written down in her world by her? if it does well I guess spoilers? if it doesn't well... spoilers?, drama is drama, Go with whatever your heart thinks is right for the character. What if Aku has, I dunno some sort of spirit in her creating confusion.

To be honest the retards to decided to make the MC's hair long as f*** pisses me off. Also that first battle was so lack luster. And if you think that Aku was cute, in my opinion the anime version is more of a down grade, because she was way more cuter in the manga. And was for the coloring of the anime, way too bright, that I might need sunglasses to watch the rest of the anime. Overall the animator were extremely LAZY. This anime had so much potential. The reason why it was made into an anime was because it was a good manga, but thanks to those retards we got a bland watered down version. Also the main character's voice sounds like crap. He doesn't even wound like a tough mafia boss. No wonder the anime is getting bad reviews

- such a weak and stupid background story for aku and the village, also weird way to isekai-ed
- cool, gentleman, and anti-cliche mc, i like it
- aku likeable and act unlike any LN protag sidekick bich in the first appearance, another child character done right
- subpar visual
- bad audio directing
- intentional overlapping-like ED ??????
- atleast they self aware and make it less serious with that 4th wall breaks

The story isn't that generic, animation is fine, has decent soundtracks and character designs are fine too (not to mention the loli blonde Rem).
I'll watch it and see how it goes. Wasn't a bad start.

Quite surprised by the negativity. I thought it's a nice start, pretty fun and straight forward with cuteness in it. Even the animation is better than DAL III, which was an absolute horseshit, yet rated 1 point higher than this anime.

accurate some shitty anime have higer score cause normies relate more with the mc and have much bait on it.
nothing so bad for first episode, there is more low production than this and cliche story with generic looking and generic personality character than this

I like it. Setting seems very basic isekai, which is not really a downside for me. Protagonist being adult (and that voice!) is a very nice thing. The only part that worries me is how low budget it looks.

Not the best first impressions.

The generic as heck intro where some random guy suddenly transports to another to a game world due to X reason here. He hears mysterious voice and wakes up in the middle of nowhere.

The opening felt horribly mediocre and I couldn't help but kinda just stare at it with a less than amused face.

Also I couldn't help but laugh when the guy in the village fell back when Hakuto appeared. The animation was hilariously out of place.

I'll give it a shot though since I did like the some of the interaction between Aku and the MC. The fatherly vibes had me smiling. If the story goes in the right direction it might not be so bad.

Isekai with OP MCs usually gets bad scores. People don't like either of those things and gives them a low score even before they've even watched an episode. At least it seems that way.

Maou sama, Retry! is like a family friendly version of Overlord (I'm not saying it's a bad thing)

Personally I do not find this anime so bad (I wanted to wait for the release of Arifureta, Isekai cheat Magician and Okaasan online to have a better opinion)
Detail that I liked was that the MC was transported to the world of the video game that he created, something that should not be ignored.
The MC pleases me in the sense that at least he's decent enough to care for and protect an unknown girl, Hakuto's design is not so bad, a demon-looking gangster does not seem too far away.
Aku by her side is too adorable, but more than anything she generates that feeling of protecting her and making her happy no matter what and Hakuto seems to take care of her as if she were a daughter, I also like that Hakuto treat Aku with dignity, I hope that He continues to take care of her in that way.
Anyway, nothing out of the ordinary, but despite that has a decent potential and I want to see the girl who looks like a doctor.

We have the first isekai of the season. At the moment it reminds me of the anime Isekai Maou to Shoukan Shoujo not Dorei Majutsu, remember? The isekai starring a "demon Lord" of a video game invoked to another world by a semi-human cat and an elf. There is much similarity in the way in which both protagonists were taken to another world.
I also remember that the protagonist of that anime had a powerful ring, this reflected any kind of magic.
Obviously to many, Aku reminded Rem of Re: Zero. A blonde Rem, hahaha πŸ˜….

When Kunai said at the end "At least let me format my hard drive before taking me," he reminded me of Rimuru of Tensei Shitara Slime Datta-ken. LOL πŸ˜‚.

This could not have been more similar to “how not to summon a demon lord”. A guy who is the top player of an MMO RPG is transported to another world, a Harem slowly builds around him (including discount rem haircut), and he now roams the world being super OP while trying to act manly

The mc just looks terrible in the anime. Should have just stuck with the manga character design. Reading the manga I was expecting the anime would have like the overlord vibe. But it's so idk..childish? Can't get the correct word. And every time the mc uses his spells...like why u gotta say it so annoyingly. Ha. Anyway I would still finish the anime.

I heard its a new studio so I guess their budget was low.
