Maria? Who is it? Ahh... the damn UUUUUUUUU LOLI who just asked for a good bitch slap & got one in ep 1, amirite? Dont see her mother, who is such a FABULOUS woman in this ep & that makes me a sad panda :(

Another great episode anyways. Pacing is great, and it's really interesting.
Exactly my thoughts, that's why I think all the adults, especially Battler, with his turning table this, turning table that, sucked big time when they failed to notice the strangeness of Maria. And please dont feed me with the crappy excuse of her being a kid so adults dont bother suspect her. Thats why this show will never reach the AWESOMENESS of Higurashi since it has none of credibility in a supernatural mystery serie.
This isnt really a spoiler but i don't want people to start complaining that i spoiled it when i clearly didn't.
It's been well established and all the characters already know that Maria is odd. Her obsession with the supernatural and her seemingly sudden personality swings aren't new too the family, which is why they don't spend any time being surprised about what she says or how she says it. They didn't fail to notice, their just used too it. This is just something they failed to go over, or if ever, will go over it much later.
And please don't start labeling Umineko when it's barely started. It hasn't even started showing itself as the supernatural mystery it truely is, that begins in episode 2. If anything, most fans of 07th agree that Umineko is far better then Higurashi for a great number of reasons. stop being so incredibly judgmental too a series that barely started.

You know what though, Ketuekigami, Higurashi does a much better job at setting tone in a serious, non-melodramatic way. That's something that Umineko totally lacks, and regardless on what fans of the games say, I don't see how that could be said about the shows. It's the third episode, and there is just a lot of tackiness in the execution of the show. By the third episode of Higurashi, didn't we have the
big murder with Keiichi?
There's a marked difference in setting tone, introducing characters, and dealing with suspense that is absent in Umineko.
I personally don't know if it's an adaption problem since it seems that even those familiar with the story are split on that though, but I can say that the show suffers from having too large of a cast, and a production that wants to hearken to Higurashi too much. They make drawing comparisons far too easy with the bug eyes and camera angles similar to Higurashi.
The problems you have are likely an adaptation problem. Since all the scenes that are being shown are normally spaced out with other calmer and maybe more explanatory scenes between them the dramatic scenes might be seen as forced, melodramatic, or tacky with their absence. That's one of the reasons many of the vn players said it was very rushed.

All I will say is that it will be near impossible for you to say this later. Theses two are far too different and i honestly can't bring up a valid argument to prove that since you have not been shown the true nature of Umineko yet. I don't want to argue about something in which i have all the information that i cannot divulge while you are missing that key information which significantly hinders your opinion. All that i want too say is that if this adaptation is handled as it should be, then starting or midway through episode 2 you should understand the true genius of the series.

So far it fails to creep the shit outta me like Higurashi did. But it's still good, I'm getting drawn in :)
Though there are too many Maria's expressions, it doesn't have the impact if they're doing it all the time.

Exactly. Higurashi had far worse animation and all but...I'm starting to think that maybe it actually HELPED setting the tone.

The thing is though, that I'm not talking about content. It's fairly obvious that this show doesn't have to do with some disease and blah, blah, blah that happens in Higurashi. They've already placed significant importance on the witch Beatrice, and they just barely mentioned some witch in the Higurashi Rei OVA. I'm just saying that in everyway that they've presented this show thus far (besides maybe the clock stuff) someone could intelligently (and not rashly) draw comparisons to Higurashi.

He is more referring to the way it is directed, how people are presented and how the story is told, I think, than he is to the story or anything like that. In which case it very much is like Higurashi.
Sideways angles! Speedlines! Sudden maniacness with odd faces! Bulging eyes! It is pretty much sensationalistic.
It really does not fit Umineko well. Higurashi was about paranoia, it benefited well, Umineko is about... urhhh.... Epistemology, or something. It would benefit from an earthier, less sensationalist portrayal of everything. A more human look at things.
(Also, a 360 degree turn would take it back to where it started out, since it is a full circle.)
Yes. I think if they had used the chessboard metaphor in a much broader sense with the clock stuff, then I think a better tone would have been set from the beginning. Granted, I'm not a fan of the "turn the chessboard over" stuff since it's not something I haven't heard a million times in other shows and movies from around the world, but if they're going to bother making it a big deal, why not expand on it?

I saw people say that all the time and I was so sure that I would still hate her even after I found out. But they were right. I don't hate her anymore.
It seems like Studio DEEN is trying to make this look too much like Higurashi and that's really annoying. But I'm sure people won't be comparing it to Higurashi as much later on ^^
Less uuuu, more evil smiles. This episode was full off win.
Also I'm pretty sure someone already mentioned it but this was the second episode where I saw Maria watching the cast from Higurashi on the television, that was a really nice touch ^_^

Well, the execution of the series is definitely trying to make it out to be all creepy and paranoiac. Which to a slight degree may be okay, since the Legend of the Golden Witch really WAS sort of creepy and paranoid... Though in a very different way from this, I think.
Either way, Kon is doing her old Higurashi tricks, so not even the director is spared expecting this to be a new Higurashi. It matters little what the SN was.

Later episodes will make this apparent.
This is just the basic stuff of Umineko. The series doesn't really take off until the next arc.

Oh well, if you putting it that way, it seems more "logical" now. I really pity Maria's mother for having to take care of such an annoying & problematic child though, ahhh...if only I can have Persona 4's MC power to go through the screen to comfort her on my manly chest...;d
"Turn over the chessboard" means to look through the eyes of your oponent and predict his next move and the reaction of your turn.
In this case it means to look from the perpective of the killer.
Why does the Person act like "Beatrice" what is to gain and so on.
But what is if the culprint isn't human?
Will the game logic still work?
Anyway:
Thanks about the clearing my confusion about the higurashi scene.
(I thougth rigth place wrong Person?!) Because I only remember the sqishing part of the DVD specials. :=)
(Cause I can't get the DVDs in my country and I stream.)
The oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear, and the oldest and strongest kind of fear ist the fear of the unknown.
Good Episode. I kinda wanted Eva to die. Then they decided to go and give her a bit emotions I was like hmm maybe she is cool. Then HACK dead woman in a bed.
Good Episode. Anime with a slow start. Though once they get going they are really keeping me sucked in.
Can't Wait for Next Episode

Best episode yet, easy. This one actually seriously managed to creep me out. Well, okay, mostly it was Maria's doing. Those faces of hers are so freaky. ._.
Pretty good episode. Better than the first two in my opinion. The pacing was relatively good, and I'm surprised they didn't cover more than the second twilight. I wonder how many episodes will be dedicated to Episode 1 at this rate
If only the visual novel had the anime's character designs, I would actually play it as that the story is very interesting. Golden butterflies definitely reminds me of Philemon. In this case, its the manifestation of Beatrice, the golden witch..
Maria looks so much like those yandere girls from the Higurashi series. Honestly, that facial expression and that laugh is beyond words of shock. If I hadn't know that the culprits are demons, I would had suspected Maria-chan as that she could be just like those female main characters of the Higurashi series. Unfortunately, since I do know who the culprits are. I get the feeling that Battler won't be able to solve the murder mystery anytime soon or at least until a few more casualties.
Last episode had 6 deaths and this episode had 2.
Looks like there will only be one sole survivor by the end of the series and that most likely would be Battler and in the end, maybe he becomes the culprit as that the entire island is dyed in blood-stains. And the fact that he doesn't believe in witches make it worse..
Shannon's death makes the series really depressing. She makes a great candidate for most ecchi love comedy animes as female lead yet she had to die such a death in the first episode. After George proposed to Shannon in the garden, the next day Hideyoshi found her in the shed along with the corpses of 5 other victims, all of which has distorted faces. Hideyoshi had told George to remember her last expression and forget the current one as that he is told to avoid entering the bloody shed. Her face is twisted.. However, she did wore a diamond ring on the ring finger of her left hand. This made George more sad than he already is but now, to figure out who the culprit is.. Battler is leading to solve the murder mystery but the guy isn't suitable as that he doesn't believe in the supernatural.
The mystery
The ones who seem to be most suspicious would be the servants as that the key to the shed was placed back into the storage. Why would the culprit murder 6 individuals in the dining room, carry their corpses all the way into the shed, then get the key in the storage to open and lock the shed, then place the key back into the storage? The culprit is most likely not acting alone as that it is not possible to kill and move 6 corpses within a mere few hours. However, the culprit knows the surroundings of the mansion extremely well and thus, the most suspicious ones would be the servants but at the same time, it can also be deduced that the culprits are trying to make the servants look most suspicious as that the culprits are not the servants. For that matter, the most suspicious ones are definitely not the culprit as that it makes no sense. This also implies to Eva who is the remaining sibling who will obtain all of the inheritances as that the other 3 were among the murder victims. Although Eva seems to hate Krauss, the main inheritor but based on this logic, she is definitely not the culprit. Speaking of which, it was only a matter of hours when Kanon, the lead servant discovers the corpses of Hideyoshi and Eva, parents of George in which a sharp object protrudes from their foreheads. Now, there are a total of 8 corpses and 10 remaining survivors. The founder of the household, the grandfather and also the contractor has gone missing. The three servants are no doubt not the culprits. George, Battler, and Jessica are obviously not the culprits. Natsuhi who has the one-winged eagle engraved in her heart is also not a suspect. Maria-chan seems suspicious but there is no way an elementary school girl can kill 6 adults and relocate them. One person seems to be missing from this list of survivors and that individual may be one of the servants I don't know of. And thus, it leaves.. The suspect has to be the formless witch, Beatrice.
Golden butterflies
Considering that Philemon lives in the realms of the consciousness and the unconsciousness, he is obviously also on the island. For that matter, I wonder if the golden butterflies of Beatrice will ever cross the path of the golden butterflies of Philemon. Philemon's powers obviously surpasses Lucifer, Satan, and Beelzebub. Sounds interesting but wrong game..
