Well, everyone has a different kind of taste in entertainment.
Maybe they can't stand Japanese dub or some animation entertainment.

@StreamerPT

I don't think that most people "hate" anime. They may have some negative preconceptions but most likely simply aren't interested rather than genuinely hate it. If I name enough stuff I can probably find something that you don't know much about, but aren't interested (and would rather spend the time doing something else), but is loved by a group of people.

No, not really. Or at least not anymore.

It's really because of the ecchi, exaggerated voices and emotions, the anime gasps, gigantic eyes, and its overall stupidity sometimes.

Makes sense, but my theory still works if they have not seen anime and only heard about it. If they ask you what is anime, you probably wont say *oh anime are japanese cartoons that have characters with gigantic eyes and they are very stupid* wont you?

Maybe is because the society says "cartoon is for kids" and they have rooted in their mind this. Too can be because they aren't accumosted to watch anime.

Because the hardcore otaku give the entire community a bad name... with their dakimakura, their social awkwardness, and their creepy/obsessive/perverted habits.

Go look up any weeaboo cringe compilation, and you'll see the reason a stigma against anime exists.
It's because the people in these videos are a bunch of weirdos, so other people who aren't like that see these people and immediately assume anybody who likes anime is the same way.

This obviously isn't true, but people have stereotypes that they associate with many different groups of people, so this is just another stereotype which is placed upon "people who watch anime".
The uneducated will think this stereotype is actually true, and will avoid watching anime out of fear of "becoming like one of those people".
Thus, a stigma is born in our culture... out of ignorance.

I have friends who absolutely love anime and friends who absolutely hate anime without even trying em. I just feel bad for the people who avoids anime without trying them. Their loss :v

I guess for the reputation anime fans have, and the fact tht people think anime --> cartoons

Anime is cartoon, when people think about cartoons first thing they have in their mind is something like Sponge bob squarepants and not Anomalisa, Lord of the Rings animation movie or Black dynamite. Add to the mix cultural differences, reputation that anime fans have and their weird behavior, anime tropes that are basically inside jokes and how it's genuinely hard to search for that one gem among all seasonal shows it's hard to get into it or see the appeal.

Honestly if you really want to try to get some of your friends hooked in this stuff best bet is to try some series/movie that falls under a genre they like.

because various people have various tastes. not everyone has to like anime.
and just because they don't like it doesn't mean it's a bad thing. it's just a preference.

well, as someone who used to hate anime herself, to me I used to dislike it bc i thought it was either for kids or perverts, no in between (yes i literally thought all anime was pokemon, dbz, naruto etc or hentai.. that's it) also i kinda felt it was for nerds, not sure why i thought that way...oh well, but here i am today 4 years later...

If you want to convince your friend(s) to watch anime, your best bet, is hope they find a really charming and sweet girl who likes it and let that girl seduce them into trying anime. If they're not single, you have next to no hope.

If you're not trying to make them watch anime, there's honestly no reason to care. People will have different tastes. I refuse to watch Korean dramas and HK dramas for (probably) the same reason why your friends won't watch anime.
There's no inherent right or wrong in this universe, but when we think with emotions rather than logic, we make things so.

They don't like the style, they think it's cringy, they think it's for little kids, they think it's all porn, etc. etc.

I find that most misconceptions about anime come from people who haven't seen more than one, or even people who have only seen some clips.

I think it's not the anime itself, it's more like the people in it(like alcohol and marijuana are not necessarily bad but people who abuse it make alcohol and marijuana look bad). Almost the same thing with anime fans, the anime fan stereotype is either you're so good in school or super socially awkward who dwells indoors) that causes some people to dislike the anime; it's the abusie of anime and these people see the lifestyle of the anime fans especially those who are vocal about it(vocal about being a fan like wearing anime shirts, dressing up as lolita and etc.) and some anime fans have their lives revolve around anime while there still exist those anime fans that are pretty chill with it and don't need to go all out. So yeah, I think it's the people in it, not the anime itself.

But the opposite is also true. For eg, one of the guys who told me he thought anime was childish, immature shit without even watching any real anime is now hooked and spent months watching and rewatching Kyoukai no Kanata.

I've witnessed a proliferation of epic proportions of anime among the people I went to school with. It's all mostly Naruto, Death note, and HxH but we all know that they're all gateway anime. It's become the new trend here and everyone willy-nilly is binging. And those same people used to spend hours on shitty TV sitcoms without any sensible plot whatsoever so they get impressed when they find good storylines.

It's kinda funny when they end up extolling the virtues of an anime to me and I go, "So how'd you feel when xyz happened?" XD It's fun to see their jaws drop when they find out I've seen virtually all anime they have and a shit-ton more lol

It's all basically a question of perception and trend. If the only anime fans they've met are the unpopular, socially-awkward nerds, they're going to think its shit. But if someone they admire or like or can mostly see eye-to-eye with watches anime, they're going to think it's good. Not to mention most of the porn we find online is hentai. So they think it's all like that and don't like it when someone even suggests that they might watch anime.

Eh. In the end, people are all crazy. I hardly think you should bother with what others think about your hobbies and interests.

They're too normal to enjoy anime. Oh well, it's their loss.

I suggest recommending them a specific series that might fit their tastes in movies/books.

There are two main reasons.

First, in the Western countries most of the cartoons are made for children. So, they assume the same applies to anime as well. They think it’s childish and immature and if they discover that you watch anime even though you’re an adult, they’ll call you a weeaboo. It’s not their fault because the only anime they’ve seen are Naruto, Dragonball and Pokémon.

And the second reason is that as I noticed on 9GAG, they think anime is full of oversexualized 12-year-old girls and to be honest, I can absolutely understand that they would hate something like that. The problem is that they see a few things here and there, but mainly the negative ones. Just think about the hardcore weeaboos who made people think that everyone who watches anime is the same.

Generalizing is a bad habit, but everyone does it sometimes. Not to mention that very few are willing to try out something new in the first place. But I’m pretty sure if you can show them an anime which fits their taste, they would change their mind.

Nice post :) I'm pretty new to anime because I thought they were childish, and it's true in some cases. I only do not agree with this part "It’s not their fault because the only anime they’ve seen are Naruto, Dragonball and Pokémon."

In my case, Naruto was the second anime I watched to (first was HxH 2011) and it's the one I enjoyed the most, and it's the anime that got me addicted to this world (at 20 years old). :)
Another thing, I thought anime were childish because of that awful italian dub too.

Lack of anime girls with lips, too much lolis, too much highschool settings, too much tsunderes. Some people also actually think all anime is porn. Heck just the other day I saw an episode of Dragon Ball Super on Xvideos and also Konosuba, I'm dead serious here. Non hentai anime being on porn sites to me shows there are people who actually believe that all anime is porn.
People just upload anything on porn sites, it's a meme of sorts and also because apparently it's the last place to look for copyright takedowns. I came across a video of a political debate involving Bernie Sanders not too long ago.

A lot of my friends dislike anime and refuse to watch it -.- when i first mentioned it they would say things like 'oh you mean those japanese cartoons of naked girls'

When I finally managed to get a few friends to watch it, we were watching Attack on Titan, my friend's parents walk in and were in shock like 'oh my god they're watching japanese porn!' ><

Prejudice, most of the time.
I have asked some people the same question, and the answers were different, depending on the person. A friend told me she`s not into animation, another friend told me that anime seem too cliche and another one told me that the only reason why he does not watch anime is because he can`t stand the voice of anime characters.
I didn`t want to watch anime at first because I was afraid of becoming that stereotypical otaku that doesn`t have friends or a social life. This stupid stereotype is what makes people reticent when it comes to anime. It is hard not to find an anime that matches one`s tastes because there are so many out there.

It's always the new forum users that ask this question.

It's because of fans that are racist, ironic enough. Fans (espicially new ones) are the reason why I hate the word "otaku". You wont see avid fans use the word like new fans do.

It's a cultural thing sometimes. The dialogue, behaviors and ideologies can be strange or alienating to someone who is not familiar with Japanese society and culture and etiquette. The yelling too much thing, for example, I chalk it up as Japanese people can be overly hot blooded or passionate when the moment strikes.

Other times it's just people turned off by the more extremist parts of the fanbase, the hardcore otaku types, or the obnoxious 4chan types that lack any sort of empathy or social restraint.

The people I hung out with in highschool were the types to think it was weird or 'gay'. Kids are stupid.

I don't think most people encountered the 'bad fans'. Any time I mentioned anime to normal people, they could only react with 'oh, cool'. It was so unfamiliar to them they had nothing to say.

True. Here in our country, watching anime is childish and stupid but watching superhero movies like batman or x-men are awesome. What's the difference?

Still, Shingeki no Kyojin, Steins Gate, or Deathnote are popular. One Piece fans are also everywhere. That's a good news for me. Anime is not dead yet?

Maybe it's the medium, anime is basically cartoons, and people are just weird when it comes to cartoons. I've always hated Family Guy & Bob's Burgers, which are cartoons, more than most other TV shows, outside of some of those reality shows, yet I know there are a lot of fans of those shows. Also, there are some people who are hung up on Marvel-DC superhero cartoons & comics and think that any other form of animation just sucks, and people who just see animation as kid's stuff anyway.
