It's not the only thing people remember the show for While I'm not a fan of these shows specifically I'd like to point out that, while you say they wouldn't be remembered as much if they were straight, they're not straight. You can't just genderswap the characters and keep the romance's dynamic the same, and maybe that dynamic is exactly what we yuri fans like. Not to mention, there are romances I would personally call just as generic and even more annoying than stuff like Girlfriends and Hanjuku Joshi get popular, like Kimi ni Todoke. Wait, did you just call Girl Friends generic? |

In my viewpoint, my favorite romance is "Beauty & the Beast" kind.
