I shut down the poor thing for like an hour every couple of days ..I go to bed , and it's open , I leave to work , and it's still open ..
I can't help it , I need it downloading anime all the time .
Am I being too cruel ? What about you , guys ?

P.S : I really don't get the difference between "Spam" and "General" , so I'm sorry , mods, if I'm posting this in wrong place .

Uh, I left one of my computers on for like 6 months. I left my laptop on for 2 weeks recently. These days tho I just put my computer on standby if I'm not downloading anything so it makes less noise. Otherwise, I leave it running.

There's nothing cruel since computers don't die like batteries. They only fail when you overclock and/or strain them (excess heat).

The only thing that can be "cruel" is leaving it on and using up energy (which will reflect on your electricity bill). Then again, there's also the green message of "shutdown your computer when not in use" since it consumes alot of energy unless it's on hibernate.

I shut it down when I am going away somewhere, or going to bed. Sometimes when I am downloading I leave it on at night, but that is really rare these days.

turn off when I go to sleep.
turn on when I get up.
Since I rarely download anything, it's not often that I leave my laptop running all night.

I close my laptop when I'm not on it which puts it into hibernate.

I only restart/shutdown when I absolutely have to, such as when I'll be away from the house for a few days.

I don't think they do. However I shut it down every morning before I go to school, because the electricity is more expensive during the day.

Never. My parents have 2 passwords (One to start up the computer, one to log me in), and they haven't told it to me. I get seriously pissed when someone turns it off.

I didn't either (just didn't think about it) then recently I did an analysis of my home's energy consumption and guess what, computer gets at least 10% of total annual energy usage. Although the power of the computer is roughly around 200 W, multiply this by 15 hours and you get 3 kWh a day, which is around 20 cents.

For me, my computer is on most of the time, but I sometimes turn it off at night. Same goes for my Laptop.

When my good computer was working, the onmly time I'd turn it off was when I was going to clean it out or mess around inside of it (which was once every few weeks; otherwise i'd leave it on all the time.

My Closet Computer would always be on, since it serves as our houses wireless access point, and my own personal storage, unless it crashed itself; but then it would restart itself.

Never. My last computer, besides shutting it down for updates or whatever reason, was on ever since I got it, which was about four years. Same goes for my new one which has been on for about five months.

Never had a power source/any problem, so I'll just keep doing it until something happens. =D

2 weeks? 6 months!? You guys are crazy.

I have my own apartment, thus pay for my own electricity. And because money doesn't grow on trees, I refuse to leave my computer on such ridiculous hours. So basically when I go to sleep, I turn off my computer, go to lab in the morning and when I come back, only then do I turn it back on. On weekends, its pretty much on for the whole day, but I turn it off again when I go to sleep.

I mean, why do people leave it on for that long? Unless you're downloading some huge file, defragmenting, or whatever time consuming activity you are doing, I don't see a reason to leave it on like that. Did any of you guys read last week's Time magazine? Energy crisis = need to be more efficient.

I close my laptop while I'm asleep, if I'm not downloading something. I restart it every week or so for updates, but it hasn't been turned off since I got it in November 07.

My desktop computer is no longer on unless I need it, as I have my laptop. I would put it to sleep but I would never turn it off, either.

Both are just fine.
Well, my desktop is buggy as hell but not from leaving it on. ^_~

I don't think it's a good idea to leave it on anymore, but it was arguable years ago. I'm just a lazy s.o.b. though, so on it stays. I'll probably start to turn it off though, start saving some energy.

I used to leave my computers on 24/7/365 regardless of whether they were in use or not, and I'd have screensavers as opposed to turning off the monitor. However they did use a lot of power; I didn't used to care since I made a lot of money and a $500 power bill was a non-issue. But now I'm retired and much more frugal, I am a lot more power conscious.

I always turn off all appliances when not in use, that includes my compy. If I'm even getting up for a few minutes I'll turn my monitor off. When I go to bed or go out, and I'm not downloading, I shut down the machine. Even with my new low-power HTPC, I don't leave it running when not using it.

Now instead of 2-3MW per quarter, I'm using 500-600kW. While a good portion of that is the compies, I've also cut down in other areas such as only using CFL lightbulbs, keeping my fridge/freezer on the minimal settings and packing them optimally to retain the cold, limiting my oven/stove usage and minimising idle/standby power by turning off most appliances at the wall. While a part of it is to be 'green' the primary motivation for me is money. I don't like wasting it. There's no reason to pay 2-4x as much as I need to.

I normally turn it off while sleeping for more than two hours, and while away at work. Factor hinted above that in the past there was a theory that repeatedly powering up and down your computer (specifically spinning the hard drives up and down) was harmful in the long term to the computer, so a lot of people (including me) kept them on 24/7. I'm glad I got away from that.

How is that even possible unless you're running a smelting plant in your basement or something? 1MWh a month is rather heavy use but > 2 in a month? o.O
