To me the CGI is mostly okay, I guess? But it really looks out of place.

It was ok. It is not 100 milion $ show to expect impecabble CGI.

It was decent and acceptable. Nothing groundbreaking, nor warranting huge criticism.
Entitled people are complaining as usual, but those wouldn't be satisfied no matter how objectively good quality you would throw at them so...

it's not really good, but at least it's not laggy like usually CGI is. nonetheless, I am dissapointed. I think action animes shoudn't have such conspicious CGI (if any)

It’s nothing crazy but it works. The show isn’t that high budget compared to other works so it’s definitely serviceable

The CGI is... hardly the best. It's very jarring when they replace 9S and 2B in the flight units with static 3D models in plain view.
The Goliaths look fine, but their animations aren't as good as in the game cutscenes or even gameplay.
I think the flight units in general are poorly animated and just kinda look ugly sometimes, which could be a lighting/shader issue.

Though the CGI in the first five minutes was definitely the worst. Especially when some of the background art literally does not exist and is just a gradient with a scrolling ground texture, like in a low-budget video game.

When recent animes like Trigun Stampede and Chainsaw Man have had great CGI, and having recently played the game, it's a bad look.

The only CGI I felt they could have done better with is the Flight Unit scenes, especially 2B and 9S. Other than that the Goliath looked good so I don't have too many complaints. The other qualities of episode 1 vastly overshadowed my issue with the CGI anyway. Pleasantly surprised how good the episode was coming from someone who finished the game twice.

CGI shouldn’t be needed but I guess that’s the state of the industry nowadays and more and more shows will use it due to the demand

disappointment. why do 3d in 2d style? Well, it would be like a game. but it turned out very strange. of course, I will look further, there is a hint of each consecutive passage, but the fact itself, as it was presented visually, is repulsive. Most likely there won't be a sequel. That’s sad(((

As someone who played the game before i liked the cgi. Its not the best it could be but its good enough. It fits preety good and it actually looks pretty close to the game

Majority of it was fine. It's simple geometry and distant from the camera, as 3D should be. It also sounds from the interviews like Platinum Games gave them the models to work with directly.

That's fine for the most part, but it looks like the anime studio decided to use the gameplay model of the flight unit in some scenes that had character closeups. They were never designed to be used that way, and so the character models are lower fidelity, and it shows when they show us the flight units in some shots.

CGI models are not that bad, the problem for me were how they used it and how it doesnt blend at all with the 2D. Being a huge Nier fan, and seeing how impeccable the CGI in 86 was, I´m kinda disappointed with how they have done this. 2D moments were nice as I expected, but the adaptation also seems rushed. Also something that I didnt like was how sometimes 2B and 9S were CGI in their ships and some other times they were handrawn. I just hope it is just for this episode which I feel is the most CGI demanding because of the Goliaths. My expectations for the anime were too high I think, I´ll let the anime sit for a couple days and then I´ll rewatch the episode and the rest of the anime having in mind it won´t be as I expected.

Let's face it, we all want most of the budget to go on 2B's Ass(ets)

A1 from what I read doesn't do its own cgi, and outsources it. With the high amount of mechas in this, this show unfortunately is not going to look as good as the 2 shows they put out in summer 2022.

I will probably watch the 1st episode a bit later today but god, I hope the CGI is not as bad as everyone is making it out to be.

I don't know anything about this franchise, I've never played the game but I did listen to a couple of the soundtracks and they are amazing, that's for sure, and if this anime is using the same amazing soundtrack then that's even better.

But yeah, I just hope the CGI is not horrible.

"Everything that lives is designed to end. We are perpetually trapped in a never ending spiral of arguing about whether or not CGI is an issue in Anime. Is this a curse? Or some kind of punishment? I often think about the god who blessed us with this cryptic puzzle… and wonder if we’ll ever get the chance to kill him."

Imagine drawing that Goliath 24 times for one second of the episode. Sheesh. Would never be me. I agree though that 2B and 9S in the fighter units look kinda dogwater.

Most people don't know this, but the CGI models are straight from the game, the directors said so in an interview before the new year. That said, it looks fine and its not like there should be a lot of it considering it's used on ships and large scale shit. I will only be disappointed if grounded boss fights will be CGI. Lets praise the sakuga tho, 2B actions scenes like fucking fantastic. So far so good imo.

Taking a close look at it, not only is the cgi poorly composites but the models lack detail and feel like some ps2 cutscene. When I paused, it was surprising how bootleg the models look. Such a downgrade from the 2 shows they out out in summer 2022.
Lol at people calling a1 pictures the studio of the year for 2022

It would be a very difficult job. But what really matters are the 2D scenes, from the next episode there will be few scenes with air combat so the animation will be more anime style. The problem is that for a first impression the CGI type can put a lot of people off in the first episode before you even have the 2D action scenes. I really hope the animation is good in the next episodes, the fight against Adam and Eve could be really good

It's okay, it's like that in the game. I think it captured the awkward feeling it had in the game. Each time a robot appears in that game I felt like this too, they were standout and had this awkward movement. The CGI I don't like is the CGI in Attack on Titan and CSM, these are shounens that shouldn't have one.

just rewatched the episode and it looks much worse than I first thought. Even shield hero's cgi turtle looked better than this.

this is like the worst cgi we have gotten since ex-arm and berserk, and this show is coming from a1 pictures, a studio we simp so highly of.

I vote for "I dislike it".

The episode isn't bad but boy, the CGI sure is fucking ugly, especially in the beginning which was horrible so yeah, I completely understand the complaints from people, that shit looks ugly. The hand-drawn animation is pretty good but the CGI is not, period.

I did say the same thing about Chainsaw Man and I complained with that horrible CGI when Denji transformed too but I ended up loving Chainsaw Man since it did plenty of other things right so this anime has plenty of episodes to redeem itself from that fucking ugly CGI so I will give it a chance and I will keep watching it.

I'm not too impressed with the 1st episode but this anime has plenty of episodes to make me change my mind, Chainsaw Man did so this anime might pull it off if it's good too.

If true apparently they are using the 3D models from the games. Squire Enix or Platinum games gave them the models to use.

Apparently it’s in a recent interview. No clue who thought that was a good idea if it’s true

87 type of CGI more or less....it looks like they're going with the same style....CGI for mechs and buildings...2D for the characters.

But I'm a little salty because a studio with better animation and experience with games didn't pick up this IP... And really salty for the fact that Genshin Impact fans are spoiled so much...You better be grateful when that show drops!!
